A method for ontology modeling in the business domain

Today ontology languages present a syntax which looks not "natural" and are lacking of built-in primitives (i.e., modeling notions) domain experts are familiar with. In this paper we present an ontology representation method , OPAL, based on Object, Process and Actor primary concept categories. OPAL offers a number of modeling notions useful in the e-Business domain, but general enough to be used in diverse business sectors (such as automotive, tourism or banking). The domain expert, during the ontology modeling process, is required to identify the relevant concepts of the domain and to classify them according to OPAL categories. Furthermore, a set of semantic relations (such as is-a, part-of, relatedness) and some domain specific relations (generated-by, updated-by, roles, skills, etc.) can be used to describe the relationships among these concepts. Knowledge can be represented by ontology. In an enterprise context, they reflect the relevant knowledge based on enterprise-specific concepts and their relations. In order to develop ontology, there are various methodologies, where each one may have some pitfalls depending on context .In this paper, based on an analysis of existing methodologies, we explore the possibilities by proposing an integrated model for developing ontology, which can be used to build any kind of ontology. Our main intention is to reduce development time and effort. We had proposed the system with respect to shopping mall domain, where dynamically ontologies can be prepared to get the information faster and correct. Further, these ontologies can be used for mapping. We compare our model with the existing developing methodology, and we had tried to remove the possible pitfalls of the existing techniques.

Nowadays, the relationships among people, governments and organizations are subject to fast changes. The increasing demand for new services conducts to the need to create services from scratch and by integrating disparate and heterogeneous legacy systems. The problem is that the monolithic form as most of the systems were implemented turns the change excessively slow and expensive. Considering that some business logic portions are quite volatile and susceptible to changes and other portions are quite stable and less susceptible to changes, this paper proposes ontology based integrated development environment (IDE) that can capture business changes and quickly implement them into computational systems. The volatile portions are externalized as business rules and the stable portions as SOA based services. Business rules' facts and conditions are linked to services, which are discovered in the business rules development or maintenance time. The IDE aggregates a set of tools to automate the modeling of business rules in the business people's terminology and to automate the integration of services. It is based on a set of ontologies to deal with metadata related to services, vocabularies and business rules. Business rules are modeled according to OMG's Semantics of Business Vocabularies and Business Rules Metamodel.

The success of machine represented web known as semantic web largely hinges on ontologies. Ontology is a data modeling technique for structured data repository premised on collection of concepts with their semantic relationships and constraints on domain. There are existing methodologies to aid ontology development process. However, there is no single correct ontology design methodology. Therefore, this paper aims to present a review on existing ontology development approaches for different domains with the goal of identifying individual methodology's weakness and suggests for hybridization in order to strengthen ontology development in terms of its content and constructions correctness. The analysis and comparison of the review were carried out by considering these criteria but not limited to: activities of each method, the initial domain of the methodology, ontology created from scratch or reuse, frequently used ontology management tools based on literature, subject granularity, and usage across different platforms. This review based on the literature showed some approaches that exhibit the required principles of ontology engineering in tandem with software development principles. Nonetheless, the review still noted some gaps among the methodologies that when bridged or hybridized a better correctness of ontology development would be achieved in building intelligent system.

The continuing need for effective information retrieval, paved way for the inception of semantic web. It’s, unquestionably, as extension to the existing web which holds distributed information lacking any logical relationships amongst themselves. This information can be integrated and related to each other using ontologies. The paper intends to bridge this gap by providing a brief idea of ontology creation and how can it help in implementation of semantic web. The paper has threefold objective. Firstly the paper provides multiple definitions of ontology and their relation with in semantic web. Secondly the paper briefly provides a comparison of several ontology development tools justifies the use of a particular ontology tool. Lastly the paper proposes an ontology on data structures.

Ontological Model Development Work Process
Indigenous Knowledge (IK) has known to be long exist and used by the local people in certain environments in making their living. This knowledgeis vital and crucial for the sustainability and the existence of a society and therefore need to be preserved from extinction. Currently, most knowledge organization models are static and difficult to be managed in a dynamic environment. To develop a dynamic and comprehensive ontological model through a heuristic and hybrid method thatcombine taxonomy and Semantic web technology requires a structured work process. For this purpose, a work process for ontological model development is constructed. The development of the work process could be used as a reference point by organizations towards nurturing a knowledge society which is important to our socioeconomic. In the future, the ontological model development work process could be replicated for other domain's use particularly for knowledge preservation.

This text provides a brief overview of selected structures aimed at knowledge representation in the form of ontologies based on description logic and aims at comparing them with their counterparts based on the rule-based approach. Due to the limitations on the length of the article, only elements associated with the representation of concepts could be shown, without including roles. The formalisms of the OWL language were used to record ontologies, while the rules were expressed in Prolog.
A Novel Way of Integrating Rule-Based Knowledge into a Web Ontology Language Framework

Web ontology language (OWL), used in combination with the Protégé visual interface, is a modern standard for development and maintenance of ontologies and a powerful tool for knowledge presentation. In this work, we describe a novel possibility to use OWL also for the conceptualization of knowledge presented by a set of rules. In this approach, rules are represented as a hierarchy of actionable classes with necessary and sufficient conditions defined by the description logic formalism. The advantages are that: the set of the rules is not an unordered set anymore, the concepts defined in descriptive ontologies can be used directly in the bodies of rules, and Protégé presents an intuitive tool for editing the set of rules. Standard ontology reasoning processes are not applicable in this framework, but experiments conducted on the rule sets have demonstrated that the reasoning problems can be successfully solved.
