Quantitative study has conducted and using simple random technique to distribute the questionnaire among construction players. Three main construction players consultant, contractors and client has chosen and individual has given 10 samples of the questionnaire due to the time constraint. SPSS analysis has practices for the data analysis process, where data reliability shows satisfactory result. Mainly effectiveness of the study indicated that collaboration has significantly effective in construction project in the following conjunction with impact of collaboration shows very impactful indicated that collaboration is less practice in Malaysian construction industry but respondents believes it has positive impact and effective. Moreover, study found that overall performance of the construction project may improve with collaboration reduce project completion time period but cost will not reduce. Further, it is found lack of effective tools and poor communication among the stakeholders are the major issues which need to address by hiring professional in the industry. In the future context study has to address other challenges and extend the data collection from the other construction players for the better understanding of the problem.

Systematic Literature Review on Communication in Construction Project Management: Issues Among Project Participants

Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property, 2022

Project communication is an important aspect that needs to be stressed in project management to ensure good project delivery in the construction industry. All the key players in construction must represent a good communication flow among themselves to avoid misunderstanding that later will affect their performance and reputation. However, there are still have issues among themselves while communicating. These communication issues are not only happening in Malaysia but in many other developing countries that are involved in the construction industry. However, there are insufficient studies on these communication issues involving project participants. Hence, the present article employs a systematic literature review to determine the issues of communication among project participants in the construction industry. The study was combined many research designs and the review was referring to ROSES (Reporting Standards for Systematic Evidence Syntheses) protocols. This research employs a systematic literature review of selected published indexed journals from Web of Science and Scopus. The findings identified several communication issues that can be categorized into different themes, which are; (1) accuracies, (2) timeliness, (3) distortions, (4) barriers, (5) under loading, (6) overloading, (7) misunderstanding, (8) gatekeeping, (9) procedures, and lastly (10) financial. Furthermore, the study also presented several significant contributions for practical purposes and a body of knowledge. The findings also described the importance of good strategies to overcome the communication issues and to look at the potential impact of those solutions on the whole progress of the projects.

Exploring the Relationship between Communication and Success of Construction Projects: The Mediating Role of Conflict

Sustainability

The success of a construction project is a widely discussed topic, even today, and there exists a difference of opinion. The impact of communication and conflict on project success is an important, but least addressed, issue in literature, especially in the case of underdeveloped countries. Miscommunication and conflict not only hinder the success of a project but also may lead to conflicts. The focus of this paper was to examine the impact of communication on project success with the mediating role of conflict. By using SPSS, demographics, descriptive statistics and correlation were determined. Smart PLS version 3.0 was used for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), internal accuracy and validity estimates, hypothesis checking and mediation testing. The results showed that formal communication has a negative impact on the success of a construction project, resulting in conflicts among project team members, whereas informal communication and communication willingness have a positive i...

The Role of Effective Collaboration for Successful Delivery of Construction Projects

Proceedings of International Structural Engineering and Construction, 2018

This paper is written with the purpose of assessing the role of effective collaboration for successful delivery of construction projects. Generally, in construction industry, to come up with the successful project delivery; the construction management team has to work against any factor that may lead to cost overruns, project delays, poor quality delivery and high level of variation. Construction projects present extreme varieties and occur in different size, shape and quality. Undertaking any construction project is a process that involves many bodies and organizations. Effective collaboration between the various parties is crucial for successful completion of both design and construction. Based on a case study of a commercial building project, this work discusses how project managers can use collaboration approach to solve project challenges that may arise during execution such as high level of project variations, endless time extension and disputes between parties to the contract...

Measuring the Influence of Communication Planning Towards Construction Project Performance

Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2021

Effective communication is necessary for the success of construction project performance. Due to its nature, effective communication is required to coordinate all parties involved in construction projects such as owners, project managers, engineers, subcontractors, etc. Few previous studies have addressed the issues of construction project communication, particularly in the communication planning stage. This paper aimed to investigate how far the communication planning has been effectively implemented in several construction projects in Jakarta and measure how big the influence to project performance. It adopts a quantitative method by distributing questionnaire surveys to contractors and consultants in Jakarta. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data which presents that communication planning has been implemented by 78.02 % of the responses and significantly impact the project performances. This paper offers useful implications for practitioners on how construction pro...

Communication and Decision-Making as a Means to Determine Project Organization Structure

Communication has been described as the 'social glue' that ties members of project teams and other organisational subunits together. Indeed, the pattern of relationships that are planned or emerge during group interaction constitute a group structure. Moreover, communication and group interaction are commonly cited with reference to the quality, effectiveness and satisfaction of group decision-making. Construction project teams are commonly referred to as temporary multiorganisations and for the purpose of this research the 'key' design and construction team members (Client, Architect, Project Manager, Contractor, Quantity Surveyor, Services & Structural Engineers) communication profiles are investigated. This paper discusses preliminary findings derived from a longitudinal investigation of twelve construction projects located in the central-belt of Scotland. Critical incidents (project problems) are used as a unit of data whereby the communication network is exposed...

Exploring complexity in construction projects

Construction projects involve and generate a number of interfaces between the various parties as these come together to deliver the output. Projects are typically characterised by complexity and previous analyses have been conducted mainly from the technical perspective. Only recently the subject of complexity has been linked to non-technical project aspects such as behavioural, social, cultural and interconnections. This paper is set out to describe the initial findings from 31 interviews with construction Project Managers which were carried out as part of an extensive investigation into socio-organisation complexity and its characteristics as this is created by the interconnection structures. In addition to the interviews, a postal survey and five case studies have been carried out all focusing in the areas of selecting project team members, structuring the project team and the management style followed by the Project Managers. Results indicate that complexity although recognised is not defined and is identified predominantly by the control and mechanistic parts of project management processes. AN OVERVIEW OF PROJECT COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY PROJECTS, Journal of Management, Economics, and Industrial Organization (JOMEINO) Vol.1 No.1, 2017

Journal of Management, Economics, and Industrial Organization, 2017

Communication is the heart of implemented projects of the construction industry, where project managers consume 90% of their time communicating with project participants. However, some barriers occur during this significant process of transferring project information. Therefore, this review paper highlights these constraints and guide project managers to take proper action to avoid them. Furthermore, as project communication needs to be carefully managed, this paper introduces communication management due to its high value, all long with the communication management plan as one of the main elements of the overall project management plan that aims to meet the stakeholders' requirements by delivering successful projects eventually.

Investigating the relationship between communication-conflict interaction and project success among construction project teams

pmo, 2012

This study aims to investigate the effects of communication-conflict interaction on the success of construction projects. The conceptual model was validated with empirical data via the structural equation modeling. The results showed that task conflict was positively related to project success, while enhanced communication among teams stimulated the positive effect of task conflict. Process conflict and relationship conflict affected each other and were negatively related to project success, leading to poor communication among teams. Additionally, communication willingness and formal communication were positively associated with the project success, whereas informal communication negatively affected project success. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the communication willingness and effectively enhance the formal communication among various project teams during the implementation of construction projects. Efforts are required to establish the formal communication mechanism to take advantage of the positive effect of task conflict whereas mitigating the negative effect of process and relationship conflict.
