Collaboration Impact on The Performance in Construction Projects: Case Study Selangor Malaysia
The study aims to identify the effectiveness of the collaboration and challenges faced by the construction stakeholder in response to the current problem in construction industry. Quantitative study has conducted and using simple random technique to distribute the questionnaire among construction players. Three main construction players consultant, contractors and client has chosen and individual has given 10 samples of the questionnaire due to the time constraint. SPSS analysis has practices for the data analysis process, where data reliability shows satisfactory result. Mainly effectiveness of the study indicated that collaboration has significantly effective in construction project in the following conjunction with impact of collaboration shows very impactful indicated that collaboration is less practice in Malaysian construction industry but respondents believes it has positive impact and effective. Moreover, study found that overall performance of the construction project may improve with collaboration reduce project completion time period but cost will not reduce. Further, it is found lack of effective tools and poor communication among the stakeholders are the major issues which need to address by hiring professional in the industry. In the future context study has to address other challenges and extend the data collection from the other construction players for the better understanding of the problem.
The Importance of Collaboration in Construction Industry from Contractors’ Perspectives

Collaboration is essential to the success of construction projects; the project participants are realizing that sharing of knowledge and information is one of the key elements of a successful contractual relationship. There appears to be no clear guide on the process of collaboration between main contractor and subcontractor; therefore making it difficult to effectively interact and achieve a common project goals within the bounds of cost, quality and time. The purpose of the paper is to identify the views of contractors on the importance of collaboration in construction supply chain. The results of a survey on the importance of collaboration in the construction industry will be supported by the results of semi-structured interviews. The structured questionnaire surveys was participated by 160 delegates at a National Forum of Malaysian Malay Contractors 2011. Next, the semi-structured interview on the challenges on collaboration in the construction industry was conducted. The units of analysis was a contractor and subcontractor organization. Six important factors were found that lead to willingness to collaborate among contractors are; (i) collaboration encourages teamwork; (ii) similar racial collaboration develops cooperation between team members; (iii) stimulate information sharing; (iv) improves quality and timely project completion; (v) enhance service quality; and (vi) better communication among project members. These findings should not be considered as universal, as the geographical or cultural differences can affect their application is a different set up.
MEGA CONSTRUCTION PROJECT COLLABORATION: THE CHALLENGES WITH COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION

In past research, project communication and collaboration have been shown to have a positive correlation. Additionally, an increasing level of project complexity has been observed as having a negative influence on project collaboration. This study attempted to gain further insights into these relationships by analysing the impact of formal, informal, willingness to communicate, Structural and dynamic complexity on project collaboration in building projects in Indonesia.

This study seeks to examine how collaboration in planning has developed in the fields of urban planning (UP), software design and lean construction and to present what construction project management can learn from these developments. A critical literature review was adopted to achieve the aim of the study. The study found that the prevailing rational or technical approach to planning is not germane to the construction industry alone. Rather, it exists in various disciplines as seen in the rational comprehensive model (RCM) used in urban planning and the waterfall process model used in software design. The research reveals that the current theory on which construction project management is based cannot provide resources, which people can utilise to develop genuine collaboration in planning among construction stakeholders. To overcome this, the study recommends that construction project management should include the concept of management-as-organising and the 'Flow' and 'Value' views which can provide resources that can be utilised by people for the smooth running of the production (construction) system as demonstrated in Scrum and the Last Planner System. This study brings new insight and opens a new opportunity on how collaboration could be achieved in construction project management using existing evidence from other fields. Additionally, the study contributes to the discussion on construction management theory that has received less attention.
A systematic review of ‘enablers of collaboration’ among the participants in construction projects

The recent advancements in the project execution thinking and the growing levels of large capital-intensive investment projects in construction have led to increased attention to the 'collaboration'. Loss or lack of collaboration between project partners is seen as the most significant professional and project execution in the construction industry. This study aims to identify the enablers, i.e. governing factors of collaboration. This study applies a systematic review methodology to explore the literature and achieve the objectives. In the process of this systematic literature review, a total of 800 articles were identified in the construction domain, out of which 110 articles were found to be relevant for this study. The 'citation analysis' was performed on the articles identified by 'content analysis' as relevant to this study, which focused on the issue of the construction industry and issues of subcontractors. The findings identified that trust, commitment and reliability are the enablers of collaboration in construction projects. Providing due attention to the enablers of collaboration, i.e. 'trust, commitment and reliability' in the context of the project execution decisions, can facilitate collaboration and thus enhancing project productivity.

A Conceptual Study of Key Barriers in Construction Project Coordination
The complexity of the nature of construction makes it one of the most adverse businesses that has ever existed. Construction projects have often suffered from high fragmentation, large waste, poor productivity, cost and time overruns, and conflicts and disputes for a long time. Thus, many new and innovative management and procurement systems in construction are introduced such as partnering, joint venture, alliances, supply chain management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), just in time (JIT), and total quality management (TQM) to meet these challenges. However, these construction management and procurement systems are meaningless without coordination, a vital managerial principle and activity, which provides the best cooperation among team members. Although coordination plays crucial functions throughout the building process especially during the design and construction stages, some failures in construction projects adopting coordination principles are still observed. Hence, a study is carried out to investigate the key barriers of coordination in construction project. Through the literature review, five groups of key barriers are established in this paper, including the nature of construction, traditional contractual arrangement, construction participants, characteristic of organization and construction management approach. The investigation of these key barriers is expected to assist the construction players in coordinating their projects towards a better implementation of the innovative management and procurement systems. Lastly, worthwhile new research topics are suggested by this paper in developing the coordination key performance indicator (KPI) and critical success factor on construction project for further studies.
Exploring the attributes of collaborative working in construction industry
Due to the increased level of uncertainty of construction market and the variety of building functions, the practitioners in construction need work together more closely, which means a higher degree of collaborative working is often necessary. There is evidence that higher degree of collaborative working can produce more successful projects, but there has been only limited research to examine the definition of collaborative working. The lack of understanding of collaborative working resulted in confusion of application of more collaborative approaches e.g. partnering or alliancing. The project delivery system has a large effect in determining the quality of a project. Strategic plans determined by the owner in the project initiation phase must ensure that project performance indicators in the form of cost and quality as well as time are accomplished. A concept of partnering that is well-managed and planned from the initiation phase will determine the quality of the construction project. Increasing the maturity of partnering is needed in order to achieve better project performance indicators. The concept of partnering in integrated and non-integrated projects has a different pattern.
