This research work compares basic types of energy meter and metering with the view of discussing the various types taking a critical look at its merits and demerits and also comparing the efficiency in terms of performance. The benefit of this research work is to ensure that adequate energy metering is use for any given meter to provide efficient services to consumers of electric powers.
A Reviev Paper on Automatic Energy Meter Reading System

The focus of this study was on the automatic reading of energy meter for billing purposes.[1] This task is accomplished using remote metre readings using GSM technology, which is used for remote readings as and when needed. As a result, there is no need to send somebody to the customer's location to gather manual readings. Smart energy metre (SEM) are these types of metre that can communicate directionally and push data without the utility's intervention. Another advantage of this method is that it can disconnect customer load if it exceeds its predefined load limit by simply sending an SMS to the client once the load is disconnected. Both the utility and the client have access to it.
The Design of Prepayment Energy Meter
The paper design a Wireless Prepayment Energy Meter, which is used to measure single-phase energy with 50/60Hz rated frequency. It realizes the functions of prepayment management and load control that pay of energy first & use it afterwards. the data can be exchanged between Energy meters and Energy supplying department by RF cards. The information can be transmitted in a non-contact way. In this way, the purpose of automatic identification can be achieved. The paper describes hardware design firstly, then software designs.
Smart Energy Meter with Advanced Features and Billing System

The paper presents designing, implementation of the cost effective Energy Meter having demand side load management with flexible tariff plan. Smart Energy Meter with the enabling feature of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and storing data in SD card, communication of billing information with the consumer and utility through GSM network, tampering detection and notify both consumer and utility through Short Massaging Service (SMS). Advanced feature of this meter is demand side load management during peak and off-peak hours. Using load management customer can go into daily cost reduction process. In load management, consumer load limit is flexibly reduced during peak hours and by increasing this limit SEM automatically cut off the load. In case of any fault SEM also automatically disconnect the complete load through relay operation..
Electronic Energy Meter with Remote Monitoring and Billing System
Electronic energy meter is capable of taking readings and can store it into its memory. Taking energy meter reading is time consuming and an expensive task. The meter reader travels for a long distance and take the reading manually to prepare the bill. Consumers have to go to the billing office, stand in a long line and submit the bill. This is a boring job and time consuming also. It can be avoided by remote monitoring of electronic energy meter and prepaid billing system by the use of cash card. In this paper measurement of energy, remote monitoring, preparing of bill and billing system is presented. Low cost ATMEGA8L microcontroller is used here to control the whole system. Sampling of voltage and current is done by it. Then it processes data to achieve power in that instant. Then it stores the value of total energy consumed by the consumer and can calculate energy charge according to the tariff. LCD display is attached with this system to show total energy consumed, power factor and amount of charge etc. Communication between central energy distribution office and energy meter is done through power line. Complex tariff rate set up and cash card based billing is possible in this system. Electronic meter gives high accuracy for nonlinear loads than conventional rotating disc type electro-mechanical meter. Greater accuracy and stability can be maintained in this system.

The user interface also consists of LCD which displays the amount of power consumed. The advantages of the proposed system make the existing system incompetent. It is possible to connect to remote areas as it employs wireless technology. The new system is user friendly, easy to access and far more efficient than the existing system.

Due to an increase in home appliances, the demand for electricity has much increased in recent years. Many people are clueless about the energy consumed by various electric appliances. An electric energy meter has the ability to measure the total amount of energy consumed by home appliances and in business areas. The revamped electric energy meter is a microcontroller-based electronic circuit which facilitates the consumer to set the limit of units for home appliances according to his budget. The proposed energy meter facilitates the user to recharge the balance in meter or to set the number of units according to his requirement;once the half of total balance or units is consumed, the meter will start alerting the user about the current status of billing and unit consumption through SMS and voice module. The modified energy meter mainly aims at the middle-class and lower-class families to bring their electricity bill down with the help of power consumption alert system. It also helps the Government as it helps in reducing the power consumption and can reduce unusual power usage. The proposed electric energy meter also facilitates to monitor the meter reading through SMS alert every thirty days.
