The Micro, small and Medium Enterprises are playing a very important role in the socioeconomic development of our country for the last many years. This sector has contributed the overall growth in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Employment Creation and exports. This paper mainly focuses on Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Govt. of India, in terms of working Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India with their employment, fixed capital investment and production during the FY 2006-07 to 2010-11. It also tries to evaluate the percentage on the above parameters of North Eastern Region (NER) of India to All India for drawing meaningful result. Some recommendations are also drawn based on the findings of the study.

This paper purports to review the importance, progress, and major issues being faced by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the perception of entrepreneurs based on empirical study. It has been recognized as an engine of economic growth and lifeline of the Indian economy owing to its inherent features of potential for huge employment generation, lower investment, low cost of capital, economic stimulation, empowerment and wellbeing of rural people. The Government has taken several measures to promote MSMEs by starting various flagship programs and initiatives.

MSMEs have a crucial role in Indian manufacturing sector and have become engine of economic growth in India. Today, small and medium industry occupies a position of strategic importance in the Indian economic structure due to its significant contribution in terms of output, exports and employment. The small scale industry accounts for 40% f gross industrial value addition and 50% of total manufacturing exports. The present paper is a modest attempt to understand concept of SMEs, their formation and significance in overall growth in India.

However, there are some important points that need to be considered for further development of the MSME sector. So, the objective of this paper is to provide a brief overview of MSME sector in India, and to make suggestion for enhancing the capacities of MSMEs for a sustainable development in India.

This study provides a detailed analysis of the key role that the MSME sector plays in India's growth and development journey. It provides information about the key economic indicators and how MSME contributes to it. Emphasis was laid on major Indicators such as employment rates, GDP, FDI, export performance, demonstrating their role in boosting the Indian economy. Thorough analysis of various government schemes like SFURTI, PMEGP, ASPIRE and other such schemes has been done to illustrate their role in promoting employment, innovation, entrepreneurship and economic progress.
