Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the economic development of many countries, contributing significantly to employment, innovation, and GDP growth. However, a large percentage of SMEs fail within a few years of their incorporation, highlighting the need to understand the factors that drive their success and sustainability. One key factor that has gained increasing attention in the literature is the implementation of e-commerce (ECI) by SMEs. While there is a growing literature on the impact of e-commerce implementation (ECI) on the business performance of SMEs (BPSMEs), there is a scarcity of empirical research on mediating role of organizational sustainability (OS) and competitive advantage (CA) between ECI and BPSMEs. To address this gap, the present study aims to examine the impact of e-commerce implementation (ECI) on the business performance of SMEs (BPSMEs), and the mediating role of organizational sustainability (OS) and competitive advantage (CA) in this relationship. The study employs a sample size of 453 units and utilizes normality test to check frequency distribution is normally distributed. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to identify the key factors influencing ECI in SMEs, and Cronbach's alpha was used to assess the reliability of the measures. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the impact of ECI on BPSME, with OS and CA as mediating variables. The results indicate that E-Commerce Implementation (ECI) has a significant direct impact (coefficient = 0.817) on Business Performance of SMEs (BPSMEs), with Organisational Sustainability (OS), and Competitive Advantage (CA) serving as crucial mediators. Specifically, Organisational Sustainability (OS) acts as a mediator, with Competitive Advantage (CA), emphasizing their substantial indirect impacts on Business Performance of SMEs (BPSMEs). The findings suggest that SMEs can significantly improve their growth by incorporating e-commerce as a core part of their marketing initiatives. By elucidating the mechanisms through which E-Commerce Implementation (ECI) influences Business Performance of SMEs (BPSMEs), this study offers practical insights for organizational leaders seeking to capitalize on the strategic advantages of e-commerce to drive long-term, sustainable growth and performance improvements within their firms. This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the downstream impact of E-Commerce Implementation on overall Business Performance within the SME context and validating the mediation model - offering important implications for managers to consider as they navigate the complexities of digital transformation.
The impact of E-marketing use on small business enterprises' marketing success
The Service Industries Journal, 2013
Small business enterprises (SBEs) are considered to be the economic engine leading to worldwide economic development. They have attracted substantial consideration from researchers, academics and practitioners in the last three decades. Meanwhile, Emarketing (EM) has emerged as one of the key drivers in sustaining an organisation's competitive advantage. Yet, there is a lack of systematic empirical evidence regarding marketing activities that are affected by the use of EM in the (SBEs) context, and their consequent performance outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of EM use by SBEs on marketing success and to develop and test a conceptual model of the antecedents and consequences of EM use by SBEs. The conceptual framework consists of the following constructs: EM budget, EM tools, pre-sales activities, after-sales activities, marketing performance and marketing effectiveness. Moreover, 12 hypotheses were developed and tested. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to test the validity of measures, while structural equation modelling was used in hypotheses testing. Data were collected from 114 SBEs who had used different EM tools. Findings reveal that the use of EM tools has a positive influence on SBEs pre-sales activities, aftersales activities, marketing performance and marketing effectiveness. The results of this study have major implications for the marketing domain, as they stress the central role of marketing people in the successful implementation of EM in SBEs.

Business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce adoption has experienced rapid growth in recent times and has become one of the fastest technology adoptions among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in gaining and sustaining competitive advantage. A firm's resource endowments influence its B2B e-commerce adoption levels that lead to competitive advantage being gained in proportion to that level of adoption. A questionnaire survey was used to collect data for this research, 315 usable responses were obtained from owners and managers of small and medium-sized manufacturing firms in Ghana. This research uses structural equation modelling to examine how different levels of B2B e-commerce adoption affects different types of competitive advantage. The main finding is that SMEs can achieve cost reduction that helps them save on costs in their operational activities through higher levels of B2B e-commerce adoption. Implications of the research, its limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.
E-marketing Strategies and Performance of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises: A Newnormal Agenda
2021
This study examined E-marketing strategies and performance of small and mediumsized enterprises: A new-normal agenda. It aimed to explore the effects of social media marketing, online advertising, and email marketing on the performance of SMEs in the new-normal era. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design. It used a structured questionnaire to obtain primary data from 295 operators of SMEs. The hypotheses developed for the study were statistically tested using multiple linear regression with the aid of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 23). The findings of the study revealed that social media marketing, online advertising, and email marketing had significant positive effects on the performance of SMEs in the new-normal era. Therefore, the study recommended that SMEs adopt social media platforms (such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp); online advertising tools (such as search engine, display, and website advertising); and email marketing tools (such as welcome email, email newsletters, and dedicated email promotions) to promote their products and services in order to enhance sales and marketing performance. Suggestions for further studies are also made as a guide for intending researchers.

Sustainable Competitive Advantage in E-Commerce and the Role of the Enterprise System
International Journal of …, 2011
Developing and sustaining a competitive advantage from the use of information technology is a topic of concern for information systems research. Mata et al. (1995) present a model that is founded on the resource-based view of the firm. The model is used to discuss factors that lead to competitive advantage in e-commerce companies. This paper explores factors that enable sustainable competitive advantages in B2C retailing. The analysis is based on a single in-depth case study of an Internet pioneer company (LeShop), which was observed by the authors since its inception more than 10 years ago. The research data stems from a series of interviews with managers at LeShop as well as two case studies about the company from two different points in time (2000 and 2009). LeShop is an online pioneer, which began selling groceries on the Internet in Switzerland in April 1998. After a turbulent few years, LeShop is now one of the few successful e-commerce suppliers in the supermarket segment worldwide. The discussion includes an analysis of further critical resources of the company from a resource-based view.

The performance of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), crucial to technological innovation within business and management, is a key obstacle to industrialization and creating a reaction to the changes. In the current study, the relationship between Technological, Organizational, and Environmental (TOE) aspects and the innovative performance of SMEs is mediated and moderated by the use of e-commerce and the efficiency of e-commerce marketing. In the present study, data were gathered through both face-to-face and online methods from proprietors and managers of SMEs operating in six prominent cities in Pakistan. Nearly 274 participants were randomly chosen to participate in the data collection. While 250 completed surveys were used for the analyses due to the unfinished survey report. The current study employed SPSS 25 to calculate the descriptive statistics, Smart Partial Least Square (PLS) 3.3.2 to analyze the data, and SEM to calculate the inferential statistics. The study's findings indicate that the environmental component, the use of e-commerce, and the technology factor (technology readiness) are all positively correlated. Similarly, there is a negative association between organizational factors (adoption cost) and the use of ecommerce. In contrast, there is a positive relationship between the use of e-commerce and the innovative performance of SMEs (IP). The usage of e-commerce does not mediate adoption cost and innovative performance, but Technology Readiness (TR), Government Support (GS), and Innovative Performance (IP) do. The utilization of e-commerce and innovative performance and e-commerce marketing capabilities do not moderately correlate.
Strategic Antecedents and Consequents for the Performance of E-Business Companies
This article aims to examine the influence of the strategic background and of the business model elements on its value proposition, and to investigate the relationship between the value proposition and the performance of e-business. The research is supported theoretically by the Technological, Organizational and Environmental framework (TOE), derived from the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT), for the Strategic Background (IFINEDO, 2011), by the Business Model theory (OSTERWALDER; PIGNEUR; 2010; SOUZA; BATISTA, 2014) and by the business performance literature . We tested the proposed model with a sample of 252 observations, using the structural equation modeling. The main results indicate a partial influence of the strategic background in the value proposition through the constructs management positioning, organizational readiness, relative advantage and pressure from stakeholders. Relating to the business model, the constructs of market segmentation, customer relationships, capabilities, partnerships and revenue model influence the value proposition, which in turn affects positively the performance of e-business companies.
