Social Media Use and its Influence on Academic Performance of Postgraduate Students of Benue State University, Makurd

This study examined the social media use and its influence on academic performance of Postgraduate students of Benue State University, Makurdi. Four research questions were answered. Population for this study was 76 library staff of Benue State University and was used as sample. Instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. Data collected was analysed using percentage, mean and standard deviation. Findings of the study revealed that Postgraduate students mostly spend their time using Facebook on social media. Findings also revealed that most of Postgraduate students spend their good on social media. The study also found that Postgraduate spend good number of hours on social media. Finally, the study revealed that usage of social media influence academic performance of Postgraduate students. Usage Intensity of Social Media and Academic Performance

Current students are constantly engaged with social media platforms not only for entertainment and interaction, but also to gain and share information. Even though various studies have been conducted on the use of social media in education, there is lack of evidence on the influence of social media on accounting students particularly in Malaysian setting. This study aims to investigate the impact of the usage intensity of social media on accounting students’ performance. It is discovered that the utilization of social media in their learning activities has influenced the student’s academic achievement after considering their proficiency and gender. In contrast, social presence and social interaction have no impact on the students’ performance.

Use of social media and academic performance of students: evidence from undergraduate students in University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka

This study attempts to examine the impact of use of social media on academic performance of students. Primary data was collected from sample of hundred and eighty students who were following degree of Bachelor of Business Administration programme in faculty of management studies and commerce, University of Jaffna from first year to final year. Use of social media is measured using different dimensions such as time duration, addictiveness, exposure and nature of usage, while overall Grade Point Average is used to measure academic performance of the students issuing structured questionnaires. The study sought to assess the relationship between student’s use of social media and academic performance of tertiary institutions students in Ghana with a focus on Accra and Tema Metropolis. Questionnaire was used for collecting data. Out of one thousand copies of the questionnaire distributed, a valid response of 70.0 % was retrieved. SPSS computer software was used to measure descriptive, correlation, regression among others. The study revealed that all the constructs of social media (dependent variable) had a significant positive relationship thus the independent variables (Facebook, Whatsapps, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and Twitter) at level 0.01 with the dependent variable academic performance.

The Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance of Students at Universities in Amhara Regional State

Even if social media usage has become a common trend among university students in Ethiopia, only scant information is available about the pattern of usage and its relationship with the academic performance in this segment of the population. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess impact of social media on academic performance of students at Universities in Amhara Regional State. For the purpose of the present investigation a descriptive cross-sectional design with quantitative data collection method was used. Multistage sampling technique was also used to select the study participants by stratified into academic unit and year of study. Data were collected by structured questionnaire. Descriptive and Inferential statistics like percentage, mean, t test, and Analysis of variance (Anova) were calculated. The study discovered that the use of social media had affected academic performance of students negatively. The findings show that there is a correlation between the students' academic performance and their usage of social networks.

INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS IN IMO STATE UNIVERSITY

The study investigated the Influence of Social Media Usage and Academic Achievement of Students in Imo State University, Owerri. The design of the study is a survey research involving three research questions that guided the study. The population of the study is made up of 668 students in Education Government, under the Department of Social Science Education. The sample for the study is made up of 100 students which were drawn using simple random sampling technique due to the large population size. Instrument for data collection is the Rating Scale titled: Social Media Student Rating Scale (SMSRS). Data were analyzed using mean score statistics and standard deviation. It was observed that social media affects students' academic performance to a very high extent; social media sites affect students study time to a high extent; and social media affects students learning behaviors to a very high extent. It was recommended among others things that students should make use of social media sites for academic purposes.

Effects of social media on the academic performance of undergraduates in Prince Abubakar Audu University

ABSTRACT The study examines the effects of social media on the academic performance of undergraduate students of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba. The rationale behind the study is to find out if students use social media in classrooms, the effects of social media on academic performance and gender difference on the usage of social media. The study uses use and gratification theory and social learning theory. A total of 398 students were purposively sampled employing the questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. Frequency distribution tables and simple percentages method was used for analysis of the data. The findings shows that majority of the respondents (62.4%) had exposure to social media and even make use of them during lecture hours, it was also revealed that (42.5%) social media had positive effect and (56.6%) negative effect on students academic performance and that however, the negative effects is more than that of the positive effects which means that social media has only done more harm than good to undergraduate students of Prince Abubakar Audu University. Based on the findings, the study concludes that social media had negative influences on students academic performance. To this end, the paper recommends that the students should pay minimal attention to their use of social media by using social medias that will be of benefit to their academic performance and focus more on their academic activities. Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance of Students: A Case Study of Sargodha University (2016-2017

This study examines the impact of social media on the academic performance of students at University of Sargodha. The rationale behind the study is to find out whether or not the exposure of the students to social media has effect on their academic performance. It is quantitative study where survey research method was adopted, employing the questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. A sample of 120 respondents were selected through convenient sampling technique. Statistical analysis of the data was done through SPSS. The findings show that social media has positive effect on academic performance of university students. Findings also show that majority of student spend less than 5 hour per day for academic purposes. Findings also reveal that WhatsApp is the most used social media's app by students of University of Sargodha.
