Aesthetic Preferences for Visual Quality of Urban Landscape in Derak High-Rise Buildings (Shiraz

The purpose of this study is to extract the indices of Aesthetic preferences for visual quality of urban landscape in high-rise buildings which contribute designers to make better decisions for designing urban landscape. As the research focuses on the high-rise buildings, this study goal address the question as follows: 'What are aesthetic preferences in high-rise buildings? How can these preferences be developed and categorized?' To achieve this objective, the Derak district of Shiraz city was selected as a case study area using Photo grid method and then all high-rise buildings in this area were identified and analyzed. Aesthetic preferences data were evaluated by Q-SORT method with the psychophysical approach. Eventually, aesthetic factors have been presented in two main categories: 'primary and distinctive'. Findings lead to the development of APPD model which suggests that when the landscape design of a building moves toward distinctive factors, the degree of its aesthetic preferences increases.

Environmental Aesthetics The Share of Environmental Aesthetic Indices in the Cognition of Urban Landscape

The Position of Garden Sculpture in Tehran Urban Space, 2016

| The concept of beauty has been always an important concern for philosophers and scientists. In recent decades, landscape aesthetics as an effective approach in recognition and understanding the environment, has played an important role in landscape literatures. Therefore, recognizing different orientations in designing landscape aesthetics and indices for preferences in aesthetics have been considered necessary for studying in this field. This paper has started by proposing this question: what is the ratio of indices of environmental aesthetics in urban landscape. To answer this question, it can be proposed that, through formulating the aesthetic indices, a model to understand the beauty of the environment based on its constituent components can be achieved. Methodology of this study is qualitative and the literature in the field of urban landscape aesthetics have been studied through library studies while aesthetic indices were achieved using logical reasoning and studying relevant resources. Furthermore, different approaches in urban landscape aesthetics have been studied and analyzed in this paper, in order to find a meaningful relation between indices and respective approaches. In order to suggest a conceptual model, four main keywords were identified that indicate on urban landscape aesthetic, including: sensation, understanding, conception and aesthetic judgment. Finally the suggested model suggests aesthetic of urban landscape include four stages: study of objective elements in urban landscape, study of organizational factors of elements that lead to excitation potential, study of intellectual property derived from environment and study of aesthetic response of human to the environment.

The Aesthetic Values of Landscape Design

2012

Public spaces are the structural elements of any architectural environment, areas of socialcohesion, spaces of coexistence, outbreaks of urbanity programmatically designed to attract all typesof public, to reunite the citizens of the city and to improve the dynamics of the urban space; in oneword, the city’s front window. The quality of urban space is primarily determined by the quality of thepublic areas belonging to the city, the areas that the city offers for common use to its inhabitants. Theaesthetic of landscape improvements have benefic influences on the cultural and artistic education ofcitizens and on their moral well-being. This study aims to establish the aesthetic values generated bythe structural elements of landscape improvements and their influences on human perception. Once theaesthetical values being identified, the paper tries to establish parameters for measuring the quality ofpublic space, and in the end, aims to generate hypothesis whose final goal is to incre...

SCIENCE ROAD JOURNAL SCIENCE ROAD Journal Investigation of Aesthetic principles in the context of Urban landscape Quality for pedestrians

The main factors in creating such attractive environments as ideal landscape to produce a degree of echoing beauty are the factors of time and movement in environment, so with looking at practice environment of Urban planning in four dimensions and considering time as the fourth one, effectiveness of this issue in methods of environment understanding for pedestrians that walk and realize landscape , the importance of places during the time, endurance and adaptability become very clear in the process of Urban planning in practice. The present study considers the subject of artistic quality through compiling the criteria, time perception in city vision which is constituted based on vision and sympathy of the audience view in space based on person's movement and formation of consequent perspectives and their mental understanding art. The primary aim of the field is reaching to the concept of beauty in city perspective and giving the perspectives the feeling of the place and making ...

EVALUATING THE VISUAL QUALITIES OF URBAN STREETSCAPES: Gauging professional and lay aesthetic preferences for design characteristics Morten Gjerde

Urban Design International, 2011

Visual qualities of well-liked settings are known to include richness and variety, tempered by perceptible underlying structure and clear associational meanings. For a variety of reasons – among them, technological, economic and professional principles – the design coherence of the built environment appears to have diminished in the wake of Modernism. However, opinions about the quality of the built environment are usually voiced by experts. Does it follow that their opinions are also those of lay people? Indeed, looking beyond academic critique of the appearance of the built environment, what are the views and aesthetic preferences of those who use the city? The article reports on the results of recent research that has evaluated perceptions of and preferences for a range of different urban street scenes. The opinions of the lay public as well as design and planning professionals have been collected for comparison. The research seeks to understand whether there are built-form characteristics, seen across a collection of buildings that make up a street edge, that are preferred over others. Based on data from 200 survey responses and a focus group discussion, the findings identify characteristics that are deemed to foster well-liked urban settings as well as those that should be avoided.

Measuring of Subjective and Objective Aesthetics in Planning and Urban Design

Civil Engineering Journal

The article includes the concept of aesthetics through what has been dealt with in the literature by philosophers and researchers who have addressed this concept in an attempt to derive indicators of aesthetics. The article adopted a descriptive and analytical methodology by reviewing recent literature on the concept of aesthetics and its relation to urban planning and design issues. Many subjective and objective aesthetics indicators have been identified, some of which are classified under real aesthetics, and some under fake aesthetics. The indicators were applied to the Kufa Mosque complex and Sahla Mosque complex as a comparative case study. It was found that the indicators of real aesthetics have a higher weight in determining the final aesthetic judgment on the complex form versus the fake indicators, which in turn reinforced the weighting of the subjective aspect over the objective. This was consistent with the answer to the question directed to the sample about which complex...

Investigating the Aesthetic Impact of Tall Buildings on Urban Landscape

2016

In this paper, we tried to investigate the aesthetic role of tall buildings in urban landscape to provide a better understanding of future tall buildings. In this study first we explained aesthetics in urban landscape; since our focus was on scenic beauty, we reviewed some techniques for evaluating visual aesthetics. In the second part, we discussed aesthetics of tall buildings in urban landscape. Finally we derived the most important factors in aesthetic impacts of tomorrow’s tall buildings. In reviewing tall buildings, it was found that the top is the most important component of the tall building in terms of its impression in the city silhouette. We also found out that factors, such as “the degree of silhouette complexity”, “shape”, “number of view corridors”, “the height of tall building against the natural backdrops”, and “skyline” are important factors in the aesthetics of tall buildings in the city context.
