International Journal of Sustainable Future for Human Security, 2017
The focus of organizations worldwide has changed from greater productivity and profit maximization to sustainable development. Those organizations that focus on profit-only often make short-term decisions without concern for long-run sustainable benefits. The concept of organizational ethics has been widely discussed as it provides the means to long-term business success. This paper considers the basis of organizational ethics as an integration of ethical climate and culture in organizations that has an important impact on ethical decision making and outcome, which in turn it could lead to sustainable development. Ethics is a philosophical concept that originates form the Greek word 'ethos', which refers to character or habit 1. Ethics, in broad terms, is influenced by a blend of personal and/or familial values, moral tenets, religious convictions, cultural standards, and optimal methodologies. Personal values stem from the moral standards that an individual applies to determine what is good or wrong, whereas personal choices are the actions that one takes to follow moral guidelines. The ongoing financial crisis is partially attributable to a series of ethical deficiencies exhibited by many entities and individuals operating within the mortgage industry, including mortgage lenders, financial service providers, and borrowers. This failure has had a cumulative impact on the financial meltdown and the worldwide recession, which has both caused and endangered the stability of individuals, as well as governments. Policymakers, regulators, and morality advocates are questioning the impact of financial emergencies and scandals on business practices, the influence of corporate ethics and culture on business processes, and the need to include ethical performance in corporate reports. This chapter explores the ethical aspects of financial, governance, ethical, social, it sustainable environmental performance (EGSEE) and addresses several associated problems.
Ethics of Business Organizations: The Basis for Their Sustainability

The strengthening of the process of the regulation of accounting and auditing, as well as the improvement of the structures of corporate governance, aims, fundamentally, to involve the various professionals that work in business organizations in a global process whose principal objective is to provide more ethical and responsible accountability practices. Hence, encouraging ethical stances is crucial in seeking to overcome the present financial crisis, and in preventing and changing the paradigm of the business model of capitalist society: the ethical principles related to the business environment should be assumed by all those intervening in the process of accountability. In this context, the goal of this research is to ascertain whether, among professionals working in this field in Portugal, there exists an appropriate perception of behaviour and ethical attitudes, and whether there is control and promotion of these attributes. In particular, we seek to locate significant associations between the responses to the questions raised, and to do this, we use, among other statistical instruments, Spearman's correlation coefficient. The results obtained reveal certain specific characteristics of the groups questioned. 47 detecting ethical problems that are not perceptible, which presupposes an ethical sensibility .
Strategic leadership of ethical behavior in business
Academy of Management Perspectives, 2004
The strategic leadership of ethical behavior in business can no longer be ignored. Executives must accept the fact that the moral impact of their leadership presence and behaviors will rarely, if ever, be neutral. In the leadership capacity, executives have great power to shift the ethics mindfulness of organizational members in positive as well as negative directions. Rather than being left to chance, this power to serve as ethics leaders must be used to establish a social context within which positive self-regulation of ethical behavior becomes a clear and compelling organizational norm and in which people act ethically as a matter of routine. This article frames the responsibility for strategic leadership of ethical behavior on three premises: (1) It must be done-a stakeholder analysis of the total costs of ethical failures confirms the urgency for ethics change; (2) It can be done-exemplars show that a compelling majority of an organization's membership can be influenced to make ethical choices; (3) It is sustainable-integrity programs help build and confirm corporate cultures in which principled actions and ethics norms predominate.
