Engaged Learning Practices of Students in Chemistry Learning
Interdisciplinary Research in Education
This study aims to investigate engaged learning practices among undergraduate students in the field of chemistry. The study employed quantitative research design with a total of 88 students from two university campuses in the Kathmandu valley. The research employed a 30-item questionnaire with Likert type, developed based on relevant literature on student engagement, to collect data. The results indicated that the students displayed high levels of behavioural engagement such as staying focused on their chemistry studies, following their teachers' instructions, and completing their assignments and projects on time. Moreover, they were also found to be actively engaged in cognitive practices such as setting learning goals, exhibiting curiosity and interest in chemistry, and putting effort into understanding the concepts. Additionally, the students demonstrated high levels of emotional engagement by exhibiting a desire to understand chemistry, enjoying learning new information, and...
The Challenges of Defining and Measuring Student Engagement in Science
Educational Psychologist, 2015
Engagement is one of the hottest research topics in the field of educational psychology. Research shows that multifarious benefits occur when students are engaged in their own learning, including increased motivation and achievement. However, there is little agreement on a concrete definition and effective measurement of engagement. This special issue serves to discuss and work toward addressing conceptual and instrumentation issues related to engagement, with particular interest in engagement in the domain of science learning. We start by describing the dimensional perspective of engagement (behavioral, cognitive, emotional, agentic) and suggest a complementary approach that places engagement instrumentation on a continuum. Specifically, we recommend that instrumentation be considered on a "grain-size" continuum that ranges from a person-centered to a contextcentered orientation to clarify measurement issues. We then provide a synopsis of the articles included in this special issue and conclude with suggestions for future research.
Science Teaching and Learning Activities and Students' Engagement in Science
International Journal of Science Education, 2011
The purpose of this analysis is to describe the variation in students' reports of engagement in science across science teaching and learning activities. In addition, this study examines student and school characteristics that may be associated with students' levels of engagement in science. Data are drawn from the Programme for International Student Assessment 2006 study. The analysis employs a quantitative approach that includes descriptive and inferential statistics to examine three measures of student engagement for a nationally representative sample of approximately 12,000 15-year-old students in the UK. The main results indicate that there is an association between students' motivation towards science, enjoyment of science and future orientation towards science, and the frequency in which various teaching and learning activities take place in the classroom. Understanding student engagement in science and the factors that influence it is essential in addressing the issue of uptake of science after compulsory schooling.

Student engagement is one of the indicators of a successful teaching and learning process. Many studies claim that student engagement is associated with the performance and achievement of students. In this study, the researchers aimed to determine the effects of science laboratory environments and science learning motivation towards student engagement in learning science among non-science students. 468 upper secondary non-science students in Sarawak were involved in this survey with the administration of three sets of questionnaires on science laboratory environment, science learning motivation and student engagement in science learning. Multiple regression was used to analyse the research questions. Both science laboratory learning environment (r = 0.523) and science learning motivation (r = 0.670) are found positively correlated to student engagement. The results also revealed that the science laboratory learning environment and science learning motivation are significant predicto...

OF DISSERTATION ASPECTS OF SCIENCE ENGAGEMENT, STUDENT BACKGROUND, AND SCHOOL CHARACTERISTICS: IMPACTS ON SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT OF U.S. STUDENTS Science achievement of U.S. students has lagged significantly behind other nations; educational reformers have suggested science engagement may enhance this critical measure. The 2006 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) was science-focused and measured science achievement along with nine aspects of science engagement: science self-efficacy, science self-concept, enjoyment of science, general interest in learning science, instrumental motivation for science, future-oriented science motivation, general value of science, personal value of science, and science-related activities. I used multilevel modeling techniques to address both aspects of science engagement and science achievement as outcome variables in the context of student background and school characteristics. Treating aspects of science engagement as outcome variables p...
Understanding Engagement in Science Education: The Psychological and the Social
Olitsky, S. & Milne, C. (2012). Understanding engagement in science education: The psychological and the social. In Fraser, B. J., Tobin, K., & McRobbie, C. (Eds.) Second International Handbook of Science Education (pp. 19-33). Dordrecht, Netherlands: Springer Publishing., 2012
Traditionally, engagement as a feature of student action has been the purview of psychologists seeking to identify the individual variables that come together to constitute student engagement. Recognition of the complexity of the concept has led to multidimensional models that include behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Data for these studies typically are culled from surveys of individual students. However, such approaches have two limitations – there is no place for examining collective engagement and the role of classroom interactions for engendering engagement is not sufficiently emphasized. In this chapter, we explore sociological approaches that can offer the possibility for developing a richer understanding of student engagement. We examine new research in which engagement is posited as emerging from collectively generated emotions, which then have implications for both cognition and behavior.
SCIENCE ENGAGEMENT, INTEREST AND PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS
IOER International Multidisciplinary Research Journal, 2022
This surveycorrelational study determined the level of engagement and interest in relation to Science performance of Grade 9 regular students of Capiz National High School for the School Year 2017-2018. This involved 285 students from 988 total populations selected through stratified random sampling by lottery method. The researcher-made questionnaires were used to determine students' Science engagement and interest, while students' grade in the third quarter was used to measure Science performance. Frequency count, percentage, mean, and standard deviation as descriptive statistical tools were utilized for data analyses. Moreover, t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Pearson r were used for inferential data analysis. A two-tailed test was used at 5% level of significance for all inferential analysis. The study revealed that level of Science engagement of Grade 9 regular students is highly engaged, their interest is highly interested and performance is very satisfactory. No significant difference is found in the level of engagement of the Grade 9 regular students when classified as to sex, monthly family income and parents' education and no significant difference is found in the level of interest of the Grade 9 regular students when classified as to sex, monthly family income and parents' education. Also, no significant difference was assessed in the level of Science performance of Grade 9 regular students in terms of sex and no significant difference when classified as to monthly family income and parents' education. However, the significant relationship is found between Science engagement and performance. Similar result conformed between science interest and performance.
CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT ON STUDENTS' SCIENCE ENGAGEMENT IN PRIVATE SCHOOLS
IJARW, 2024
This research study investigates the relationship of classroom environment in students' science engagement among students in the private school Stella Matutina Academy of Bukidnon, Inc. for the school year 2024-2025. The study aims to 1. Determine the quality of classroom environment in terms of; physical layout of the classroom, classroom atmosphere and teacher interaction. 2.Examine the level of students' science engagements in the aspect of; participation in class activities, own motivation to learn, persistence in answering problem solving, and 3. Investigate the relationship of classroom environment on the students' science engagement The study involved ninety-five students. Survey questionnaire were utilized, to gathered data. SPSS were used to get the mean and Pearson correlation value. Research finding were; the learning environment plays a pivotal role in fostering academic engagement among students. A supportive classroom climate has been shown to positively impact students' self-efficacy and engagement levels. Effective classroom management and teacher support are crucial for cultivating this positive climate. The physical aspects of the classroom, including layout, resources, and noise levels, also significantly affect student engagement. Studies suggest that classrooms designed to facilitate interaction and collaboration lead to higher levels of student participation and satisfaction.
