Organic food as a healthy lifestyle: A phenomenological psychological analysis

This study explored the phenomenon of the lived experience of choosing a healthy lifestyle based upon an organic diet as seen from the perspective of the young adult. Interviews were collected in Sweden and analyzed using the descriptive phenomenological psychological research method. The results showed the general psychological structure of the phenomenon, comprising four constituents: (1) the lived body as the starting point for life exploration, (2) a narrative self through emotional-relational food memories, (3) a conscious life strategy for well-being and vitality, and (4) a personal set of values in relation to ethical standards. The results provide plausible insights into the intricate relation between psychological meaning and the natural world.
“More than a diet”: A qualitative investigation of young vegan Women's relationship to food

One's relationship to food is an important factor that can contribute to wellbeing but can also lead to eating disturbances. Research in this area has linked vegetarianism and veganism to disordered eating. However, through social media, many young women have recently started to share their vegan experiences with many highlighting the role that veganism may have on promoting a 'healthier' psychosocial relationship to food. The current study aims to qualitatively explore the role that veganism plays in young women's wellbeing and relationship to food. Participants were ten young vegan women aged 18 to 25. Semistructured interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). These women were found to passionately engage in a vegan lifestyle, as opposed to just a vegan diet, which appeared to have a number of positive effects such as a healthier lifestyle, a stronger sense of control and agency, more meaningful social relationships, and a sense of connection to a vegan sub-culture. Through veganism, many of the women transitioned from social disconnection and a focus on body image, to a stronger emotional (empathic), cognitive (knowledge of animal cruelty and healthy eating), and behavioural (diet and consumption choices, actions towards other) investment in their social worlds. We suggest that the healing potential of veganism, is derived from this passionate investment of the self that redefines young women's ways of being in the world. The healing benefits of engaging in a vegan lifestyle may have clinical significance for working with young women who are socially disengaged or who are at risk of disordered eating.
Adolescent's Willingness to Adopt a More Plant-Based Diet: A Theory-Based Interview Study

A plant-based diet is more sustainable, and research suggests that adolescents obtain health benefits from adopting a more plant-based diet (e.g., improved weight control, increased cardiovascular health). However, it is still unclear what factors promote/hinder their intention to attain such a dietary habit. The aim of the present study was to examine factors affecting adolescents' willingness to consume more plant-based foods. In a theory-based interview study, using the Reasoned Action Approach as framework, adolescents were interviewed concerning their reasons for their (un)willingness to adopt a more plant-based diet. A total of 11 adolescents (15/16 years old; 7 girls, 4 boys) were recruited and interviewed at two secondary schools in the Dutch Province of Limburg, the Netherlands. Consumption orientations may support (or hinder) transitions to more plant-based diets

There have been increasing calls for triggering and sustaining a large-scale transition toward healthier and more sustainable food systems. To help materialize this transition, the present work aims to inform efforts for developing, marketing and promoting plant-based meals and plant-forward lifestyles, following a consumption-focused approach. The findings (Nparticipants = 1600, Portugal; 52.6% female, Mage = 48.30) allowed to identify trends and differences on three sets of variables-(a) current eating habits (i.e., meat, fish, and plant-based meals), (b) consumer willingness to change (i.e., reduce meat consumption, follow a plantbased diet, maintain the status quo), and (c) enablers for eating plant-based meals more often (i.e., capability, opportunity, motivation)-, considering consumer orientations toward consumption in general, and food consumption in particular. Taken together, the results suggested that some consumption orientations were aligned with the transition to more plant-based diets (e.g., food orientation toward naturalness), others were open to-but not yet materialized in-the transition (e.g., general orientation toward consumption as exploration), and still others were in tension with the transition (e.g., food orientation toward pleasure). The discussion calls for developing and testing pathways to reduce meat consumption and increase plant-based eating which capture and build upon a range of consumption orientations, rather than against them.
Adolescents’ Food Choice and the Place of Plant-Based Foods

A diet dominated by plant foods, with limited amounts of refined processed foods and animal products conveys substantial health benefits. This study sought to explore adolescents' attitudes and perceptions towards plant-based foods. Semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with adolescents (age 14-15 years) (n = 29) attending an inner city school in Yorkshire, UK. Using a grounded theory methodology, data analysis provided four main categories and related concepts revolving around adolescents' perspectives on plant-based foods: food choice parameters; perceived drivers and benefits of plant-based foods; environmental food cues; barriers to plant-based food choice. In the emergent grounded theory, a clear disconnect between plant-based foods and the parameters that adolescents use to make food choices, is highlighted. Further, key barriers to adolescents adopting a plant-based diet are differentiated and considered with respect to practice and policy. The analysis offers a framework to remodel and represent plant-based foods. In this way, it is proposed that a closer connection is possible, with consequent shifts in adolescents' dietary behaviour towards a more plant-based diet and associated health benefits.
Young adults´ use of food as a self-therapeutic intervention

The aim of this study was to investigate how young adults use their lived body as a starting point for lifestyle explorations and as a strategy for well-being. The transcripts of 10 interviews with persons 18 to 33 years old, collected in Sweden, were 10 analysed for variation in the practises and experiences related to this way of using food. An application of the descriptive phenomenological psychological research method guided the process. The young adults were: (1) listening to the body; (2) moderating conditions and feelings; (3) developing vitality and resilience; (4) creating mindful space for rest, and (5) participating in creative activity. The results show how young adults perceive their choice of food and related practises associated with positive feelings and experiences as ways to promote well-being and mitigate different problems in life. The 15 usefulness of knowledge about how young adults try to use food for self-therapy by enhancing mind-body awareness is discussed in relation to health issues and food-related interventions.

BACKGROUND Consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with the reduction of many chronic diseases. Transtheoretical model is one of the most common models used for studies on nutrition. The objective of this study is to evaluate the processes of change across stages of change for fruits and vegetables consumption. MATERIALS AND METHODS 600 literate women of Gilan-e-Gharb city (a west part of Iran) who were selected by random sampling method participated in this cross-sectional study. Data gathering tools was a questionnaire that consisted of 30 questions which included demographic (n= 5), stages of change (n= 5) and processes of change (n= 20) as well as 24 hours recall questionnaire for fruits and vegetables consumption. We assessed the internal consistency questions using Cronbach's Alpha and validity by S-CVI. Statistical analysis used: Data were analysed by SPSS 19 using the T-test, ANOVA and Chi-square. RESULTS The majority of subjects (89.5%) belonged to the passive stages of change (pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation) and only 10.5 percent were in active stages (action and maintenance). Average daily consumption of fruits and vegetables was 3.4 ± 0.96 servings, which was lowest in pre-contemplators and increased until the maintenance stage (p < .001). Mean score of cognitive and behavioural processes were higher in maintenance stage and lower in pre-contemplation stage. CONCLUSION Given the important role of the cognitive and behavioural processes in promoting people from passive stages to active stages of change, we suggest implementation of these processes by using appropriate strategies in educational intervention for promoting consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Processes underlying young women's decisions to eat fruits and vegetables

To relate the use of identified processes that college women use to eat enough fruits and enough vegetables to their stages of readiness to change and their fruit and vegetable (F/V) intakes. A cross-sectional assessment of college women 18-24 years of age (n = 236) was conducted to assess stage of readiness to eat F/V. Use of seven processes, earlier confirmed in a separate sample of college students the same age (health concerns, self-reevaluation, social liberation, health commitment/action, interpersonal control, external reinforcement and helping relationships) was compared with stage of change for F/V and 3 days of dietary intakes. In these young college women, use of self-reevaluation, a cognitive process for change, peaked in the preparation stage for both F/V. Use of health commitment/action, a post-action process including counter-conditioning, peaked in those in action/maintenance for F/V. Weight concerns related to the counter-conditioning processes women used to eat more fruit. Health practitioners should focus on weight management, appearance and health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables for this demographic group.
The role of emotional states in fruit and vegetable consumption in Brazilian adults
O papel dos estados emocionais no consumo de frutas e vegetais em adultos brasileiros Resumo O objetivo foi verificar a associação en-tre a autopercepção do estado emocional com o consumo adequado de frutas, verduras e legumes (FVL). Este é um estudo transversal de base popu-lacional com uma amostra probabilística de 1100 adultos residentes na zona urbana de um municí-pio de médio porte do Brasil. Considerou-se como consumo adequado uma ingestão ≥ 3 frutas con-comitante com ≥ 5 colheres de verduras/legumes ao dia. O estado emocional foi avaliado através da autopercepção do nervosismo/stress e distúrbios psiquiátricos menores (DPM). Potenciais fatores de confundimento incluíam variáveis demográfi-cas, socioeconômicas e comportamentais. Foram observadas associações significativas entre a auto-percepção de nervosismo/stress e DPM com o con-sumo adequado de FVL. Após o controle de fatores de confusão, adultos relatando ausência de nervo-sismo/stress possuíam uma chance de apresentar um consumo adequado duas vezes maior do que aqueles relatando nervosismo/stress. Similar-mente, participantes com ausência de distúrbios psiquiátricos possuíam uma chance de consumo adequado FVL 52% mais elevada quando com-parados àqueles que relataram presença desses sintomas. Quando estratificada por gênero, esse efeito aumentou e manteve-se com significância estatística apenas entre as mulheres. This is a population-based cross-sectional study with 1,100 adults from a medium-sized city in Southern Bra-zil. Adequate FVC was defined as concomitant intake ≥ 3 fruits and ≥ 5 tablespoons of vegetables per day. Exposures were self-perception of ner-vousness/stress and minor psychiatric disorders (MPD). Data analysis used logistic regression. After controlling for demographic, socioeconomic and behavioral variables, adults reporting lack of nervousness/stress were twice more likely to report adequate FVC than those who reported it. Similarly , those reporting not having MPD symptoms were 52% more likely to have adequate FVC than those who did not. These effects increased and remained significant among women.
Psychosocial determinants of fruit and vegetable intake in adult population: a systematic review

The '5+ a day' fruit and vegetable servings recommendation was introduced in New Zealand in 1994, but consumption has remained low in young adults ever since. This study aimed to identify psychosocial determinants of fruit and vegetable consumption among New Zealand university students approximately a decade after the guidelines' introduction. Twenty-nine students, aged 18-24 years, took part in focus group interviews. Important determinants included taste and health awareness/knowledge. Flatmates and partners had the greatest social influence. Cost and availability were major barriers to consumption. To improve consumption participants suggested: cooking sessions providing quick/easy recipes; morevaried nutritional information; 'made-to-measure' interventions; increasing awareness of cheap sources of fruit/vegetables; and increasing campus availability of fruit. Determinants including a negative attitude, a lack of self-efficacy and an unawareness of dietary guidelines/health consequences should be considered when developing interventions for this group, whilst a variety of different delivery channels should be used. Participants in the study were not representative of all university students, who generally have a different lifestyle to other young adults and specific determinants for fruit/vegetable consumption. Consequently, additional research is required among other young adults and university students with lower fruit and vegetable intake, so that promotional strategies can be specifically targeted.
