General Self-Efficacy among Family's Female Caregiver of Elderly with Alzheimer's disease (original) (raw)

Background & Aim: Caregivers of elderly with Alzheimer's disease, particularly females, encounter challenges. Their different roles in giving care to the patients could result in physical and mental disorders. The self-efficacy seems to be an essential factor in empowering individuals coping with stressful situations and challenging tasks. The aim of this study was to investigate general selfefficacy among women as family caregivers of elderly with Alzheimer's disease. Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 112 women reffered to the Iran Alzheimer Association, Tehran were selected through convenience sampling method. The General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE-10) was used to collect data. Data were entered into the SPSS-16 and then processed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe. Results: The mean score of the general self-efficacy was 28.24±6.34 indicating that considerable percentage of the participants had unsatisfactory level of self-efficacy (65.2%). In addition, there were significant relationships between the women's general self-efficacy with educational and economic statuses (P<0.05). There were no significant relationships between general self-efficacy with age, marital status, occupational status and duration of caring. Conclusion: According to the findings, a considerable percentage of the participants had unsatisfactory level of self-efficacy. Therefore, it is essential to promote the caregivers self-efficacy in order to give them the ability of better adaptation with the life's challenges. In particular, the self-efficacy promotive programs should be implemented among caregivers with lower educational and economic status.

Nurses' attitudes towards supportive needs of hospitalized elderly at educational hospitals of Bushehr in 1392

Introduction and purpose: Limitations of old age and chronic illnesses lead to frequent use of both inpatient and outpatient health services. Nurses' attitude toward providing comprehensive and quality care as well as assessment of patients' needs is of great importance. The aim of this study was to assess the nurses' attitudes towards supportive needs of elderly patients admitted to hospitals at the Bushehr University of Medical Sciences in 1392. Materials & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 nurses working in hospitals of the Bushehr University of Medical Sciences. The participants in the present study were selected by census method. Data were collected using a questionnaire that designed by researchers and consisted of two parts including demographic characteristics and supportive needs of elderly. The supportive needs of elderly composed of three domains named physical, psychological and spiritual need. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-test and Pearson Correlation using SPSS 19. Findings: The mean age of nurses participated in this study was 29.80±5.317 years and %86 of them were female. The majority of nurses reported positive attitude toward physical and spiritual needs of elderly. However, nurses' attitude toward psychological needs of elderly was mainly neutral. Our findings showed that there is a significant and positive association between age and experience of nurses with nurses' attitudes in all three domains of physical, spiritual and psychological needs (p <0.0 5). Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, nurses' attitude toward physical and spiritual needs of elderly was mainly positive, while it was neutral for emotional needs. Therefore, it is recommended to promote nurses' attitude toward emotional needs of hospitalized elderly in order to meet patients' psychological demands and maintain their dignity.

Comparison of psychological well-being and coping styles in mothers of deaf and normally-hearing children

Background and Aim: Families who have a child with hearing deficiency deal with different challenges, and mothers have a greater responsibility towards these children because of their traditional role of caregiver; so, they deal with more psychological problems. The aim of this study was to compare the psychological well-being and coping styles in mothers of deaf and normal children. Methods: In this cross-sectional and post event study (causal-comparative method), 30 mothers of deaf students and 30 mothers of normal students from elementary schools of Ardabil, Iran, were selected using available sampling. The Ryff psychological well-being (1989) and Billings and Moos coping styles (1981) questionnaires were used in this study. The data were analyzed using MANOVA test. Results: We found that in mother's of deaf children, psychological well-being and its components was significantly lower than mothers of normal children (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively). There was a significant difference between two groups in terms of cognitive coping style, too (p<0.01). However, mothers of deaf children used less cognitive coping style. Conclusions: It seems that child's hearing loss affects on mothers psychological well-being and coping styles; this effect can be visible as psychological problems and lower use of adaptive coping styles.

The study aimed at constructing and applying a consulting program to indentify the effectiveness of this program in reducing the social isolated behaviour of a sample from the first secondary stage. Through testing the following null hypotheses: - There is no statistical significant differences in the mean scores of the experimental group in measuring the social isolation before and after applying this consulting program. - There is no statistical significant differences in the mean scores of the pre-test of the control group and the post-test inmeasuring the social isolation. - There is no statistical significant differences in the mean scores of the experimental and control groups in measuring the social isolation after applying the program. For achieving the aims of the study, an instrument was constructed to measure the social isolation . Validity and Reliability were approved. The sample consists of (40) students who were distributed into two equal groups; experimental group and control group. The consulting program was prepared to deal with the purposes of the study. It was applied on the experimental group, where 16th sessions were held with (2) sessions weekly and for one hour for each session for the Acadimic year 200412005. The results indicated that the consulting program showed a clear effect in reducing the behavior of social isolation of the students. The two researchers recommended that a consulting program should be applied on other high secondary schools.

The lifestyle of married women referring to health centers in West of Ahvaz

Introduction: Given the importance of healthy lifestyle related factors such as nutrition, physical activity, smoking, sleeping, leisure, individual health and reproducetive behavior, the aim of this study was to determine the lifestyle of married women, aged 15-45 years old, referring to health centers in west of Ahvaz city. Materials & Methods: In this descriptiveanalytical study, statistical population includeed 384 married women, aged 1549 years old, referring to health centers in the west of Ahvaz city. Sampling was conducted by stratified method. The tool for collecting information was a researcher designed multi-section questionnaire, which was completed by aid of trained interviewers along with interviewing.
