Young People in Complex and Unequal Societies Doing Youth Studies in Spain and Latin America
YGW, 2022
Youth studies in Latin America and Spain face numerous challenges. This book delves into youth experiences in the 21st century, shaped by complex and pressing issues: the surge of youth cultures and groups, visual images of youth throughout time, and fragmented youth experiences in radically unequal societies. It analyzes young people as precarious natives in global capitalism and labor uncertainty, juvenicide, feminist discourse, social networks, intimacy and sexual a fection among young people in a context of growing claims of gender equality. Also included are rural and indigenous youth as political actors, the actions of young political activists within government administrations, the experience of youth migration and empowerment, and young people dealing with the digital world. How have youth studies approached these issues in Latin America and Spain? Which were the main developments and transformations in this research eld over the past years? Where is it heading? Contributors are: Jorge Benedicto, Maritza Urteaga, Dolores Rocca, José Antonio Pérez Islas, Juan Carlos Revilla, Mariano Urraco, Almudena Moreno, Óscar Aguilera, Marcela Saá, Rafael Merino, Ana Miranda, Carles Feixa, Gonzalo Saraví, Antonio Santos-Ortega, David Muñoz-Rodríguez, Arantxa Grau-Muñoz, José Manuel Valenzuela, Silvia Elizalde, Mónica Figueras, Mittzy Arciniega, Nele Hansen, Tanja Strecker, Elisa G. de Castro, Melina Vázquez, René Unda, Daniel Llanos, Sonia Páez de la Torre, Pere Soler, Daniel Calderón, and Stribor Kuric.
Youth Studies in Latin America: On social actors, public policies and new citizenships
Youth Studies in Latin America is a field that combines different traditions and approaches developed throughout almost a century. These traditions can be roughly grouped as political and social commentary and analysis, the development of 'expert' knowledge to inform the design of social policies or interventions on the situation of vulnerable and disadvantaged youth and critical/cultural studies in search of new social arrangements, where new politics of recognition, dialogue, democracy and citizenship can take place. We present this text as a wider context for the articles that comprise this special issue on youth studies with contributions from Argentina, Chile, Colombia and México.
Article, 2021
This article approaches, from a youth perspective, an overview of the situation of youth in Latin America and the Caribbean based on global and regional socioeconomic and demographic indicators. It provides an intersectional analysis of the oppressions and challenges that young people face to achieve their full potential within a complex structure of power relations, inequality, exclusion, discrimination and violence. Based on the evidence, it highlights effective and promising interventions for guiding investment in youth through public policies, budgets and programmes at scale, as measures for redistributing power and resources that contribute to the fulfilment of their human rights, autonomy, emancipation and agency to participate in public affairs that affect them.

Youth Politics and Culture in Contemporary Latin America: A Review
Youth politics in contemporary Latin America diverge from those of previous generations. Increasingly decoupled from parties, unions, and the state, young people glide seamlessly across previously assumed boundaries: culture and politics, individual and organization, subjectivity and collectivity, virtual and “real.” This article presents findings from a systematic review of research on youth politics and demonstrates the new direction through three main categories: repression, incorporation, and exclusion, relationships between state institutions and youth identities; generational, cultural, and digital lenses, the innovative trends for theorizing current patterns of youth politics; and unsettling politics, the fusion and diffusion of youth political dexterity. The article concludes by highlighting current strengths and proposing future steps to build on this new direction.

DEDICATION I dedicate my dissertation to the street girls that made this dissertation research possible and to all my family members and closest friends that supported me along the way. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to thank the members of my committee for their support and guidance throughout the dissertation research and writing process. Dr. Patricia Price was the driving force behind my doctoral training and guidance throughout fieldwork in Latin America and I have learned so much from her mentorship. I wish to thank my parents, Virginia and Stanley Ritterbusch, and partner, Hover Riascos Alomia, for believing in me and providing their loving support as I entered the world of street girls. Stephanie Brown, Richard Gioioso, Hannah Coleman and Diana Riascos Valencia also stood by me throughout the research and writing process and I am extremely grateful for this emotional support. I also wish to thank the Fenix Foundation, especially Timothy Ross and Paola Ceballos, for accepting me as part of the Fenix family of outreach workers and introducing me to the streets. Most importantly, I wish to thank each girl involved in the project for showing me the way, accepting me within the community, befriending me and taking care of me in the roughest streets. This dissertation documents the everyday lives and spaces of a population of youth typically constructed as out of place, and the broader urban context in which they are rendered as such. Thirty-three female and transgender street youth participated in the development of this youth-based participatory action research (YPAR) project utilizing geo-ethnographic methods, auto-photography, and archival research throughout a sixphase, eighteen-month research process in Bogotá, Colombia.
