2010
This work presents a study of the use of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavities in the design of microwave oscillators and their effect on phase noise performance. Harmonic balance (HB) simulation and electromagnetic (EM) simulation are used to design a 12 GHz feedback oscillator and a 12 GHz reflection oscillator. Prototypes have been implemented and measured in order to investigate the effects of using different SIW cavities on the phase noise performance of oscillator circuits.

The cavity resonator is fabricated on a Si substrate and bonded with a Quartz wafer. The resonator shows the resonant frequency of 39 GHz, the insertion loss of 4.6 dB, and the loaded quality factor (Q L) and unloaded quality factor (Q U) of 44.3 and 107, respectively.
Low-loss LTCC cavity filters using system-on-package technology at 60 GHz
2005
In this paper, three-dimensional (3-D) integrated cavity resonators and filters consisting of via walls are demonstrated, as a system-on-package (SOP) compact solution for RF front-end modules at 60 GHz using the lowtemperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) technology. Slot excitation with a λ g /4 open stub has been applied and evaluated in terms of experimental performance and fabrication accuracy and simplicity. The strongly coupled cavity resonator provides an insertion loss < 0.84 dB, a return loss >20.6 dB over the pass band (~0.89 GHz) and a 3dB bandwidth of about 1.5 % (~0.89 GHz) as well as a simple fabrication of the feeding structure (since it does not require to drill vias to implement the feeding structure). The design has been utilized to develop a three-dimensional (3-D) low loss 3pole band pass filter for 60 GHz WLAN narrowband (~ 1GHz) applications. This is the first demonstration entirely authenticated by measurement data for 60 GHz 3-D LTCC cavity filters. This filter exhibits an insertion loss of 2.14 dB at the center frequency of 58.7 GHz, a rejection > 16.4 dB over the passband and a 3-dB bandwidth about 1.38% (~0.9 GHz).
A 40 GHz Air-Dielectric Cavity Oscillator with Low Phase Modulation Noise
NCSLI Measure, 2014
We describe a 40 GHz cavity stabilized oscillator (CSO) that uses an air-dielectric cavity resonator as a frequency discriminator to reduce the phase modulation (PM) noise of a commercial 10 GHz dielectric resonator oscillator (DRO) frequency multiplied by four. Low PM noise and small size were the main design goals. Single sideband (SSB) PM noise equal to-128 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz offset from the carrier frequency is achieved for the CSO. In addition, we report on the PM noise of several Ka-band components.
PM noise of a 40 GHz air-dielectric cavity oscillator
We describe the design of a low-phase-modulated (PM) noise, 40 GHz oscillator that uses a conventional air-dielectric cavity resonator as a frequency discriminator to improve the PM noise of a commercial 10 GHz dielectric resonator oscillator (DRO) frequency multiplied by four. The main features of this design incorporate (1) unloaded cavity quality factor (Q) of 30,000, (2) high coupling coefficient, (3) large carrier suppression by use of interferometric signal processing, (4) large operating signal power of approximately 1 watt (W), and (5) relatively small size. In addition, we report the PM noise of several Ka-band components.
A fully integrated SiGe low phase noise push-push VCO for 82 GHz
… Arsenide and Other …, 2005
This paper describes a monolithically integrated push-push oscillator fabricated in a production-near SiGe:C bipolar technology. The transistors used in this work show a maximum transit frequency f T = 200 GHz and a maximum frequency of oscillation f max = 275 GHz. For the passive circuitry transmission-line components, integrated spiral inductors and MIM-capacitors are used. The oscillator output frequency can be tuned from 67.8 GHz to 74.6 GHz. In this frequency range the output power varies between −2.6 dBm and −0.6 dBm while the measured single sideband phase noise is less than −103 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency.
High Performance VCO Design Using High Q SIW Resonator
2021 6th International Conference on Communication and Electronics Systems (ICCES), 2021
This paper presents a novel methodology to implement LC tank in the design of a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) for improved phase noise and tuning range. For frequency selection, Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) based LC resonator is proposed and employed in cross-coupled differential pair. The SIW is designed to operate in the range from 55 GHz to 70 GHz while the VCO is designed to work at 60 GHz using 65 nm CMOS technology. The SIW resonator based VCO achieves high Quality factor (Q), improved tuning range and phase noise compared to conventional LC tank VCO. Simulation and analysis of results are performed in Keysight Advanced Design Systems while SIW structure is designed in Ansys HFSS which forms the feedback path. A detailed comparison is made between the two methods. The conventional LC VCO has a measured tuning range of 7.5 GHz while consuming 2.38 mW power from a 1-V power supply where as SIW tank VCO has an improved 15 GHz tuning range, absorbing 0.385 mW power from a 1-V power supply. The LC VCO and SIW tank VCO has a phase noise of -143.585 dBc/Hz and -113.8 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset and corresponding figure of merits are - 164 dBc/Hz and -195 dBc/Hz respectively

A design and fabrication of a dual-band synthesizer device is presented in this paper. The noise analysis in synthesizer loop block component is modeled individually. The Design methodology is elaborated along with the test results. The initial frequency synthesizer in 1.8-2.4GHz frequency range (L and S-band) is designed and it is multiplied by 8. Microstrip bandpass filters (LFCN) are used to filter out the spurious frequency contents; the final output frequency is 14-20GHz (Ku-band). Phase noise investigation, design steps, filter assembling of 14-20GHz synthesizer is presented in this paper.
