Private healthcare has shown tremendous growth over the past decades, even though the public healthcare in Malaysia still dominated. Thus, Eleventh Malaysia Plan has put a revolutionary effort to transform private healthcare sector by pursuing sustainability as well as to improve regulatory framework and increasing global competitiveness. In order to achieve this, it is suggested to perform the best practices in the context of operational excellence to ensure the robustness of Malaysian economy. Therefore, the study was intended to identify if lean healthcare practices positively impacts sustainability but can be influenced by operational performance, among private hospitals in Malaysia. Hence, a quantitative method was applied and the data was collected through survey questionnaires which were randomly distributed to a sample 118 private hospitals in Malaysia with 45 percent response rate. They were analysed by performing PLS-SEM technique with four hypotheses were supported. Resul...
Effect of Lean Six Sigma on quality performance in Malaysian hospitals
International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, 2018
Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) and workforce management on the quality performance of Malaysian hospitals. This paper also investigates the direct and indirect relationships between top management commitment and quality performance of the healthcare organisations in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach-This study applied stratified random sampling to collect data from 15 different hospitals in Peninsular Malaysia. The self-administered survey questionnaires were distributed among 673 hospital staff (i.e. doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and medical laboratory technologists) to obtain 335 useful responses with a 49.47 per cent valid response rate. The research data were analysed based on confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling by using AMOS version 23 software. Findings-The research findings indicated that LSS and workforce management have a significant impact on quality performance of the Malaysian hospitals, whereas senior management commitment was found to have an insignificant relationship with quality performance. The research findings indicate that senior management commitment has no direct significant relationship with quality performance, but it has an indirect significant relationship with quality performance through the mediating effects of LSS and workforce management. Research limitations/implications-This research focussed solely on healthcare organisations in Malaysia and thus the results might not be applicable for other countries as well as other service organisations. Originality/value-This research provides theoretical, methodological, and practical contributions for the LSS approach and the research findings are expected to provide guidelines to enhance the level of quality performance in healthcare organisations in Malaysia as well as other countries.

The Strategy Canvas that has been reported in the Eleventh Malaysia Plan, has targeted the government to improve community healthcare and yet to deliver a better service health outcomes with the strengthening collaboration among private sectors and Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs). To have a better health outcomes, lean management will be implemented to reach efficiency and optimize resources by improving work processes in the organization. But how far the private hospitals enable to survive in the long period where it can be seen the statistic of number of private hospitals is fluctuate. It indicates there are some possible factors could happen that affect the operations of the private hospitals and yet the profitability highly vulnerable. Certainly, one of the main reasons for the private hospitals is how they tolerate unnecessary waste in the organization. As such, the researcher will look deeply into how lean healthcare practices and operational performance will lead to sust...

Healthcare systems at an organizational level need to equip its people with tools that ensure continuous performance improvement to help sustain Universal Health Coverage (UHC). A large tertiary care public hospital in Oman (Royal Hospital [RH]), is sharing its experience in performance improvement using lean methodology. The RH introduced lean performance improvement to improve the efficiency of its administrative and clinical processes. This remarkable change was a cultural shift as it empowered clinical and non-clinical teams to improve the performance of the hospital operations continuously. Hospital leaders need to create opportunities for sustainable UHC at an organizational level. Introducing lean improvement methods at the hospital level leads to better problem definition and resolution. The people who do the work, need to improve the work, and eliminate waste in the processes as a day to day work style.
Implementation Of Lean Management In Improving The Quality Of Hospital Services: Literature Review
Journal of Social Research
Hospitals as labour-intensive and capital-intensive organizations, as well as providing medical and non-medical services require management to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of resources. However, this management must still pay attention to the quality of health services according to service standards and provide benefits for patients. Through Lean Management, continuous improvement can be made by eliminating waste, increasing added value, especially for patients. This is so that the hospital can be the choice of patients to entrust their health. This research is to determine efforts to improve the quality of hospital services using the lean management method. In collecting and synthesizing previous information, this study uses a systematic library research search approach using the PRISMA method. Searches were performed on the Google Scholar and PubMed databases. Articles are limited from 2018-2023, in hospital services and using the Lean Management method. Based on the ...
Measuring Lean Six Sigma and quality performance for healthcare organizations
International Journal of Quality and Service Sciences, 2018
Purpose-This study aims to investigate applications of Lean Six Sigma approaches and quality performance in Malaysian hospitals. It identifies five dimensions of Lean Six Sigma conformance (i.e. continuous quality improvement, Lean management initiatives, Six Sigma initiatives, patient safety and teamwork) and quality performance of the hospitals based on demographics such as gender, types of hospital and working experience. Design/methodology/approach-This study distributed 1,007 self-administered survey questionnaires to hospital staff resulting in 438 useful responses with 43.5 per cent response rate. Research data were analysed based on reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), independent samples t-tests and one-way ANOVA using SPSS version 23. Findings-Research findings indicate that there are significant differences between public and private hospital staff on Lean management initiatives, Six Sigma initiatives, patient safety and teamwork. Private hospital staff perceives Lean management initiatives, Six Sigma initiatives, patient safety and teamwork more favourably compared to public hospital staff. The present study findings also indicate that senior hospital staff (more than 10 years working experience) perceives patient safety and teamwork more favourably compared to other working experience groups. Research limitation/implications-The research focused solely on the Malaysian health sector, and thus, the results might not be applicable to other countries. Originality/value-This research provides theoretical, methodological and practical contributions for the Lean Six Sigma approach and the research findings are expected to provide guidelines to enhance the level of quality performance in healthcare organisations in Malaysia as well as other countries.
Uncertain Supply Chain Management
The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine a theoretical model which identifies the effect of process quality improvement and lean practices on competitive performance in the healthcare industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The study uses a quantitative research technique with convenient cluster sampling through applying a descriptive, causal and analytical research design. A valid sample size of 270 respondents is used for analysis by linear regression and hypothesis testing using SPSS. The results indicate a direct significant relationship between process quality improvement and a direct significant relationship between lean practices and competitive performance. Given the substantial resources spent and efforts to improve healthcare quality, the absence of studies demonstrating the impact of quality-related operations and activities would require future research. Hospitals in one city in UAE have access that limits the research results. It is recommended that futur...

Improving Efficiency of Health Care Organizations Using Lean Concept
2020
Lean, as relatively new management concept, surpasses the traditional mass production and creating stockpiles of goods which have to be placed on the market, without analyzing the customers’ needs. The focus of lean is on creating the value that customers demand and forming the value streams which contain only processes and activities that generate that value and eliminating all types of wastes and non-value adding activities. Lean concept was founded in Toyota company i.e. in manufacturing system called Toyota production system. Nowadays, this concept has been implemented by many worlds known organizations as the crucial part of their production system, but also other supportive processes in the company. Application of the lean concept can significantly improve process efficiency, lead to drastic cost-reduction, improved quality of the products/services provided, but also can be a main factor of increased employees productivity and resource saving. Profitable and unprofitable healt...
