Natural feeding habit of the Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) in the southern Caspian Sea in different length classes

Natural feeding habit of the Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) in the southern Caspian Sea in different length classes: Feeding regime of 55 Persian sturgeon caught from southern basins of the Caspian Sea was studied in 3 length classes of <30, 30-60 cm and >60cm. Fish were sampled using bottom trawl at 85 sampling sites at depths varying from 2 to 100m. Food organisms identified in gut contents belonged to families of Gobiidae, Mysidae, Gammaridae, Nereidae, Ampharetidae, Psudocumidae, Clupaidae, Syngnathidae, Scorbicularidae, Cardidae and insects. Our study revealed that feed diversity decreases with increase in length e.g. 8 food items were observed at length class 1 while fish at length group of II and III fed on 5 and 2 items respectively. Mysidae, Gobiidae and Nereidae were the dominant food at length class below 30 cm and for those fish categorized at 30- 60 cm length class the dominant food was Gobiidae and Mysidae. Family Gobiidae was the dominant food for fish in...

Actinopterygians from the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (A natural classification based on collection specimens, with DNA barcodes and standardized photographs), Volume I (plates), Provisional version 07

The goal of this project is to realise two volumes of a book (volume I: plates and volume II: text) on the diversity of Actinopterygians of the European Atlantic, the Mediterranean and bordering areas. In the end it will include about 1500 species. Updates are scheduled depending on the project progress. This one will be distributed on Pdf file until the publication of a final version as a book. In the text volume the redaction of the taxa will be done by the specialists of each group. The greatest interests of this project are: - to present standardised photos of all affected species. - to present specimens, all deposited in institutional collections. - to present specimens , all sampled for molecular biology and to provide these samples to others researchers. - to use the results on cladistic analyses (molecular and morphological) to organise the classification within the book. This provisional version and those that will follow are mostly for researchers working on systematics of...

First Record of the Dusky Spinefoot Siganus Luridus (Rüppell, 1828) in the Adriatic Sea

During the regular monitoring of the marine protected area of Miramare (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic) in August and September 2010, a specimen of dusky spinefoot Siganus luridus (Rüppell, 1828) has been sighted, photographed and filmed in the period from 17 August and 13 September 2010. This is the first record of this Lessepsian migrant in the Adriatic Sea. Although only a single specimen was observed in the studied area, this record represents a further spreading of an alien species which has already establish its populations in different countries of the eastern and southern Mediterranean Sea.
