A total of eight compounds were isolated from the petroleum ether and chloroform extracts of the root bark of Zanthoxylum rhetsa (Roxb.) (D.C). These are a coumarin xanthyletin (1), five quinolone alkaloids zanthodioline (2), arnottianamide (3), skimmianine (4), fagaridine (5), oxynitidine (7), a lignan pluviatilol (6), and a triterpene lupeol (8) were identified. Structures of the isolates were characterized by extensive 1D and 2D NMR analyses and by comparing their spectral data with the published values. The compounds, zanthodioline (2), oxynitidine (7), fagaridine (5), and pluviatilol (6) are the first record from this plant.
Zanthoxylum coriaceum alkaloids related to bishordeninyl terpenes
Phytochemistry, 1990
Five new alkaloids related to bishordeninyl terpenes, (N,N'-demethylalfileramine, N,N'-demethylculantraramine, N,N-demethylisoalfileramine, N'-demethylalfileramine, N-demethylalfileramine, and one new monomeric alkaloid 4-(2-N-methyltyraminyl)-(Z)-1,2-epoxy-2-methylbut-3-ene were isolated from the methanolic extract of the leaves of Zanthoxylum coriaceum. These are very closely related to alfileramine, previously isolated as the major leaf component.

The Brazilian flora is known for its vast biodiversity; however, many species have been still little studied regarding to their chemical composition and biological potential. Thus, this study aimed to determine the antimicrobial, antioxidant and acaricidal activity of the extracts of leaves of Zanthoxylum caribaeum L. In addition, phytochemical screening of these extracts was carried out to determine the main classes of secondary metabolites present in Z. caribaeum. Using the Z. caribaeum leaves, the aqueous extract and extracts were obtained in organic solvents (ethanol, methanol, hexane, acetone, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate). The antimicrobial activity of extracts was determined by broth microdilution method, and to detect antioxidant activity the method of capturing the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) was used. The acaricidal activity of the extracts was tested on Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer) (Acari: Dermanissidae). Ethanolic and methanolic extracts pr...

The phytochemical investigations of the methanol extract of Zanthoxylum gilletii bark led to the isolation of thirteen compounds identified as two alkaloids including one acridone 5-hydroxynoracronycine (1) and one benzo [c] phenanthridine decarine (2), three lignans trans- and cis-fagaramide (3 and 4) and sesamin (5), two coumarins scoparone (6) and scopoletin (7), three pentacyclic triterpenoids fridelin (8), lupeol (9) and erythrodiol-3-O-palmitate (10), one phenolic compound vanillic acid (11) as well as two common steroids stigmasterol (12), and its derivative stigmasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (13). The structures of all the isolated compounds were elucidated by means of their spectroscopic and spectrometric data (1D, 2D-NMR, MS) as well as the comparison of these data with those reported in the literature. Except for compounds 9 and 11–13, all the other isolated compounds are reported for the first time from Z. gilletii but have been already obtained from other Zanthoxylum ...

Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides (Lam.) Waterman (Rutaceae) is a tree from 5 to 15 m high that grows spontaneously in West Africa. It is frequently used in Malian traditional medicine for the treatment of various ailments. Thus, the present work is part of the development of this plant through an ethnobotanical survey and a phytochemical study of its leaves, stems and roots collected in Yanfolila and Ouélessébougou. The ethnobotanical survey showed that this species is used in the treatment of various pathologies such as tooth decay, toothache, throat, stomach and headaches, sickle cell anemia, sterility, cardiovascular diseases, edema, childbirth pains, and other diseases, sexual impotence, malaria, bilharzia, diabetes, hemorrhoids, dermatosis, constipation, fever, eye infections, dysentery. In most cases the preparation is done by decoction. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of coumarins, sterols and terpenes in the three investigated organs from the two sites. The alkaloi...
Bioactive compounds from the fruits of Zanthoxylum leprieurii
2009
Four acridone alkaloids, tegerrardin A 1, 1-hydroxy-3,4-dimethoxy-Nmethylacridone 2, arborinine 3 and xanthoxoline 4 and a coumarin, scoparone 5 have been isolated from the fruits of Zanthoxylum leprieurii, used as spice in many Cameroonian traditional dishes. Compounds 3 and 4 displayed a good in vitro antiplasmodial activity against 3D7 strains of Plasmodium falciparum with IC 50 values of 4.5 ± 1.0 and 4.6 ± 0.6 µg/ml, respectively. Compounds 1 and 3 are good chelating agents with 90% and 61% Radical Scavenging Activity (RSA), respectively. Compound 2 showed good activity in the superoxide anion scavenging assay with 90.3% RSA. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic and physical data.
Kaurane Diterpenes from the Fruits of Zanthoxylum leprieurii (Rutaceae
The fruits of Zanthoxylum leprieurii Guill. & Perr. (Rutaceae) are traditionally used in Africa, particularly in Cameroon, as a spice and in the treatment of sickle cell anaemia. Phytochemical investigation on the fruits of this plant afforded five kaurane diterpenes, i.e., kaurenoic acid (1), xylopic acid (2), ent-kauran-16βol (3), ent-16β-hydroxykauran-19-al (4) and ent-16β-hydroxykauran-19-oic acid (5). The structures of these diterpenes were determined comprehensively by spectroscopic means (1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and MS analyses) and also by comparison with respective literature data. Among the isolated compounds, only kaurenoic acid (1) exhibited cytotoxicity against the PC3 cell line with an IC 50 value of 33.28 ± 9.14 µg/mL. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the isolation of these kaurane diterpenes (1-5) from the genus Zanthoxylum.

A new cyclopeptide, cyclozanthoxylane A (1), the lignans cis-and trans-methylpluviatolide, the flavonoid isoquercitrin, along with a mixture of benzoic and cinnamic acid derivatives, were isolated from the MeOH extract of the leaves of Zanthoxylum rigidum (Rutaceae). The structures of the compounds were determined on the basis of 1D-and 2D-NMR, and MS analysis. It is the first time that a natural cyclic peptide has been isolated from the genus Zanthoxylum.
