String teaching in 21st Century: Bridges between research and practice, 2021
In order to contribute to Inclusive Education of children with Special Needs in Arts education programmes in Portugal, an Action-Research project started at the University of Aveiro in 2018. We intend to find solutions for children with motor disabilities due to Cerebral Palsy who enter in music Arts education programmes in the First Cycle of Basic Education, to develop their music potential and abilities through the use of Digital Technologies and Assistive Technologies. We used the Action Research and Content Analysis supported by Computer-assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software webQDA platform throughout our study. We present what has been done so far: literature review, short training workshop and characterization of the child. With the compiled information it was determined that it is necessary to carry out an Intervention Programme in the Artistic School of the Conservatory of Music Calouste Gulbenkian, Aveiro. This includes a music teachers' intensive Training Workshop focused on the use of Digital Technologies and Assistive Technology, to promote the inclusion of children with Special Needs in music Arts education programmes. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/32444
Music Therapy for People in a Disability Situation: Methodology and Process
Education Reform: Education Content Research and Implementation Problems, 2019
The research was constructed on the ground of the ideas of postpositivism, when the research data based on personal experience is of not lesser importance than “clinical” evidence. Our research aimed at answering the following questions: At what extent is music theory useful to people with mental disability? At what extent are the authorial methods of application of music theory designed by the investigators useful? At what extent are the participants able to express their feelings and evaluate the process of music therapy? The initial research results suggest that the authorial methods based on the ecological systems theory are effective and useful to the practice of social work in the Occupational Day Centre while providing services to individuals with mental disabilities. The obtained research data allows stating that the way chosen by the investigators to assess effectiveness of music therapy (filling in small books and conversations while filling them in) enables participants r...
An exploration into qualitative research in music therapy
The Arts in Psychotherapy, 1993
Research in music therapy presents a challenge as the researcher is faced with the task of both discerning artistic qualities such as creativity and improvisation, which are the essence of clinical work, and communicating those often ineffable features to other professionals in a coherent and well-defined manner. The question of whether this goal will best be met by using quantitative or qualitative research methods has been actively debated in the field of the creative arts therapies for the past ten years. Although the impact of this debate has had an influence on therapists, educators and researchers, the issues are far from resolved and demand continued dialogue. Certainly the perspective of this author and researcher, having recently moved from the academic environment to the medical model mainstream where most creative arts therapists work, is that there is a great need for continued dialogue about the reasons for and possible applications of qualitative research options.
Inclusion of children with special needs through music in Arts education programs
Abstracts Book of the 4th World Conference on Qualitative Research, 2019
In order to contribute to the Inclusive Education of Children with Special Needs in Specialized Artistic Education, in 2018 an action-research project was started to change the practices of promoting inclusion. To this end, a short-term training course was held to learn about the real needs and difficulties experienced by professionals involved in the educational and rehabilitation processes of students with Special Needs and to provide teachers in training with specific tools and knowledge to teach music to students with special needs. Once the training was completed, a questionnaire with semi-open questions prepared and validated for the occasion was applied to the 60 participants of the training. The present work reveals the results of this questionnaire, whose answers were subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis.
While music is the primary tool music therapists use to develop therapeutic relationships with clients, visual elements might be a useful additional tool when communicating with clients with limited verbal skills. This project aims to gain a better understanding of the use of visual elements in music therapy for adolescents with learning disabilities by conducting semi- structured interviews with four music therapists with relevant experience. The interview materials were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings suggest that music therapists experienced the use of visual elements differently depending on their therapeutic approaches; they experienced benefits and challenges of using visual elements; they identified benefits and limitations of working with other professionals in Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools when using visual elements with adolescents with learning disabilities. It is my hope that this project will benefit adolescents with learning disabilities receiving music therapy, as well as music therapists who wish to explore non- musical tools to support the musical therapeutic experience with their clients.

The AQR-Instrument (Assessment of the Quality of Relationship)-an instrument to observe and assess the quality of relationship based on developmental-psychological knowledge-was developed for use in music therapy with children with profound developmental disorders (Schumacher/Calvet 2001, 2005, 2007). The AQR-Instrument consists of 4 scales that focus on differing phenomena of expression: instrumental expression, vocal pre-speech expression, physical-emotional expression, the therapists and his/her interventions. Within each scale, 7 modi are used to assess the quality of the inter-personal relationship indicate and give important indications for methodical approaches. The research presented here, the first to apply the AQR-Instrument in a music educational setting with adults with disabilities, assesses the ability of 3 group members to form relationships according to the handling of instruments. It aims to ascertain the ability of the participant to take part in group sessions as well as to examine the methods used by the teacher and whether these were appropriate for the participant and also gives important indications for further music educational approaches. Examples will be shown on DVD. 2 The paper includes information and DVD examples about the setting and the didactical considerations for the musical-educational work with this group of adults with severe disabilities and finishes with thoughts and implications for future work.

The Effects of Music On The Outcome of Learning On Children With Disability
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2020
This research tends to study two of the ideas as the objectives as (i) how music affects the learning outcome on the children with disability and secondly, (ii) what are the complications the teachers face in dealing with teaching those challenged learners. In order to achieve the objectives the researchers made a descriptive type of case study research design as a qualitative research. The study population was a special school of learners with disability in the village of western Tobago. Due to the homogenous nature of the population three learners among the 35-40 students were chosen as per the direction of the school principal who were observed for a month at three days per week. Three teachers were directed to make three lesson plans on teaching them with the help of music for a month and the lesson plans were revised by the researchers before implementation and then two of the teachers were deep-interviewed with guided open-ended questions. This was done with the approval of the principal and an indication that all protocols were being followed along the design and collection of the study. Thus, natural observation over the learners and focus group interview helped to collect the data for the purpose of the research. These observations and interviews were thematically analysed to understand the issues related to using music as an intervention tool in the teaching and learning of students with disabilities.
Use of Music in Special Education and Application Examples from Turkey
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2014
Music, as in the case of every individual, is an essential element which makes life liven up and raises its quality for the individuals with special needs as well. Music, besides being entertaining, provides educators and/or therapists with a lot of opportunities for using it with the purpose of education and therapy on various aspects. Many researches related to these functions of music show that using music in the educational programmes of the individuals with special needs yields effective and useful results just like in the case of normally developing individuals. Music can be used in different ways with individuals with disabilities. Both in "music education" in which the musical knowledge and skills are in the centre and the development of these skills through voice and instrument training is the aim and in "education through music" where the music is used as embedded teaching to support the other developments of kids (like cognitive, sensual, psychomotor), the existence of music in the education programmes of the individuals with special needs increases the effectiveness and permanence of the education and facilitates conducting more enjoyable and highly motivating activities. "Music therapy", which indicates the use of music for therapeutic purpose is also important as a complementary element in training activities. Whether with the aim of education or therapy, the use of music both in the individual and group education creates an important, inclusive, integrative and stabilizing atmosphere. Conducting music activities using multi-sensational music education approaches which offer opportunities for creativity and improvisation is a factor that improves efficiency. In this study, by mentioning various uses of music in the field of special education, some examples of application in the field of special education in Turkey are cited.
