Burnout among Finnish and Chinese university students

Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 2017

In this study the levels of experienced burnout of Finnish and Chinese university students are compared using School Burnout Inventory (SBI). This study is motivated by earlier studies, which suggest that the level of student burnout is different in the culturally distinct Finnish and Chinese university systems, but which are based on different research instruments for the two groups. The sample studied consisted of 3,035 Finnish students and 2,309 Chinese students. Because of the cross-cultural nature of this study the level of structural equivalence of SBI between the cultural groups was examined and the effect of different response styles on the results was taken into account. Both standard and robust statistical methods were used for the analyses. The results showed that SBI with two extracted components is suitable for cross-cultural analysis between Finnish and Chinese university students. Virtually no difference was found in experienced overall burnout between the Finnish and Chinese students, which means that both university systems contain factors causing similar levels of student burnout. This study also verified that controlling for the response styles is important in cross-cultural studies as it was found to have a distinct effect on the results obtained from mean-level comparisons.

Burnout in master's students: A case study

Safety Engineering, 2021

Burnout is associated with long-term exposure to workplace stress and it comprises exhaustion, cynicism, and the feeling of inadequacy as its dimensions. University students are exposed to a variety of stress-inducing factors during their studies regardless of the fact that they are not employees. The aim of this study is to examine the relations between specific sociodemographic variables and burnout dimensions among students of master academic studies. School Burnout Inventory (SBI-U 9) is used as the research instrument. The obtained results indicate that there is a connection between students' gender and tuition fee status and burnout. Gender is associated with exhaustion and the feeling of inadequacy, while tuition fee status affects all three dimensions.

Prevalence of Burnout in Medical and Non-medical Undergraduate Malaysian Students in Various International Universities - A Cross-Sectional Study

Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research, 2018

Aims: To determine the prevalence as well as potential risk factors of burnout among Malaysian undergraduates who were studying in Malaysia and overseas. Study Design: Cross-sectional. Place and Duration of Study: Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC), Melaka, between May and June 2016. Methodology: We circulated the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (CBI-SS) online to assess personal, studies-related, colleagues-related and teachers-related burnout levels among the students. A total of 538 responses were collected, of which 249 were medical students and 289 non-medical. Results: The prevalence of burnout in medical and non-medical students were 27.3% and 20.1% respectively. Only the type of course (medical/ non-medical) showed a significant difference in burnout prevalence (odds ratio = 1.50, confidence interval: 1.00-2.23). The same was true when the type of course was adjusted towards age and gender in logistic regression analysis. No other

The Consideration of Students’ as Workers and the Role of University Department Along with the Year of Study Towards the Examination of Burnout

Economy & Business Journal, 2019

The role of the university department and students’ year of birth and year of study in relation to burnout syndrome has been examined thoroughly. In this paper it is assumed that students are considered as workers and that the studies are analogously their work. Correspondingly, the years of study are proportional to both the student's age and the characteristics of the workload to. In this regard, a structured questionnaire was answered by 582 students of the University of Patras whose answers were analysed via an exploratory factor analysis. The aim was to deconstruct the phenomenon of students’ burnout in its causal structural elements and to examine the impact of the university department and the year of study on each of these elements. The results showed that the university department affects the students' burnout syndrome via three channels: efficacy and self-accomplishment of studies, lack of interest in university studies and via the difficulty in collaborating with ...

Burnout among Expatriate and Local Instructors in the Middle East

Burnout, recognized as a psychological syndrome, stems from enduring reactions to emotional and interpersonal obstacles at work. It highlights the tension experienced by individuals within the broader framework of their interactions with their jobs. This phenomenon has attracted considerable attention across diverse professional sectors. With the Middle East’s rapid expansion of tertiary education and reliance on both local and expatriate educators, a thorough understanding of burnout becomes essential. This study aims to investigate the burnout levels experienced by university instructors in Oman and to explore the relationship between their profiles and the three burnout components: Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and Personal Achievement (PA). Using the adapted Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire consisting of 22 items, a survey was conducted on a sample of 149 instructors with individual characteristics from public universities in Oman. Regarding bur...

Examination of Stress Experiences of the International Students Who are Educated in American Universities with respect to some Variables

International Journal of Academic Research in Progressive Education and Development, 2013

Stress sources and stress levels of international students who study at American Universities were examined with respect to their class-standing, gender and English language fluency. Research findings show that number one stressor for female students is "Concerns about the future (graduation, employment, marriage, etc.)". Males' number one stressor is "Academic burdens (grades, difficult classes, excessive homework, etc.)". A significant difference between males and females was observed with respect to "Inadequate orientation programs for newcomers at the university,". A significant difference between freshmen and seniors was observed with respect to "Inadequate orientation programs for newcomers at the university,". According to this finding, the need for orientation for freshmen is significantly higher than seniors'. It is observed that there is a significant, medium level, and negative correlation between stress level and English language fluency. It is found out that the stress level of international students does not significantly change with respect to gender. The stress levels of freshmen were found to be higher than senior and graduate students. In light of the findings, some suggestions were made to counseling centers, international offices and English preparatory programs of the Universities.

An Examination of the Stress Experiences International Students Face in American Universities

Chapter, 2022

The stress sources and levels of international students studying at American universities were investigated in relation to their class-standing, gender, and English language fluency. The research results indicated that the number one stressor for female students was "Concerns about the future (graduation, employment, marriage, etc.)". Whereas, the number one stressor for males was related to "Academic burdens (grades, difficult classes, excessive homework, etc.)." A significant difference between males and females was observed with respect to an "Inadequate orientation program for newcomers at the university". It was also found that male students had a higher average than female students. Regarding a "Inadequate orientation programme for newcomers at the university," a clear difference was seen between freshmen and seniors. This finding indicated that freshmen had a far greater need for orientation than seniors did. It was found that the relationship between stress levels and English language proficiency was at medium level, adverse and significant. It was discovered that the stress level did not significantly change with respect to gender. The stress level of freshmen was found to be higher than senior and graduate students at a significant level. The results were interpreted in terms of dominant literature and Singles Counselling Theory. Some suggestions were offered to counselling centers, international offices, English preparatory programs and instructors of universities.

aspects; 3) determine whether the views do not differ statistically significant in analysed countries. Research methodology: scientific publications analysis and survey of teaching staff on aspects related to burnout in higher education. Survey was organized via survey platform QuestionPro. Invitations for surveys were sent to academic staff on their e-mails. For survey data analysis there are used indicators of descriptive statistics: indicators of central tendency or location (arithmetic means, mode, median), indicators of variability or dispersion (range, standard deviation, standard error of mean), testing of statistical hypotheses with t-test and analysis of variance-ANOVA and investigating the correlation between several analysed variables. Survey data were analysed with SPSS. Recent findings of academic researchers on several aspects of burnout of employees in higher education (Peacock, 2022) have indicated many aspects with online teaching self-efficacy during COVID-19 and changes with their associated factors and moderators (Ma et al., 2021), with importance of student self-disclosure and

Defining the student burnout construct: a structural analysis from three burnout inventories

Psychological Reports

College student burnout has been assessed mainly with the Maslach burnout inventory (MBI). However, the construct's definition and measurement with MBI has drawn several criticisms and new inventories have been suggested for the evaluation of the syndrome. A redefinition of the construct of student burnout is proposed by means of a structural equation model, reflecting burnout as a second order factor defined by factors from the MBI-student survey (MBI-SS); the Copenhagen burnout inventory-student survey (CBI-SS) and the Oldenburg burnout inventory-student survey (OLBI-SS). Standardized regression weights from Burnout to Exhaustion and Cynicism from the MBI-SS scale, personal burnout and studies related burnout from the CBI, and exhaustion and disengagement from OLBI, show that these factors are strong manifestations of students' burnout. For college students, the burnout construct is best defined by two dimensions described as "physical and psychological exhaustion&quo...
