2020

viii 6. All my friends who took the same educational struggle with me in the department of English Letters, had a hard and happy day together, sharing and learning, not only knowledge gained in the class, but also the science of life that was invaluable for four years. Finally, I realize that the thesis I wrote has many shortcomings and is far from perfect. Therefore, I very much receive any suggestions and positive criticism to evaluate my thesis. Besides, I hope that this thesis can be useful for everyone who reads, especially for the students of the English Letters Department.

ON SOME ASPECTS OF INTERNET SLANG

Having spent some time in virtual space during the last few years, reading messages, emails as well as commentary and statements made by different social site users, I have observed many changes and irregular-rities in verbal and non-verbal means of communication. As a philologist I was especially interested in different types of abbreviations, punctuation marks, spelling changes, grammatical and spelling mistakes, various icons that are mostly used by teenagers and students on the worldwide web. That was the reason I started to carry out a research on the subject. The fact that the Internet has radically changed global communication is beyond controversy. With instant access to messaging and email, the ability to circulate commentary and opinion has significantly changed the way people communicate nowadays. This has had an impact on the spoken and written language. The Internet is now an integral part of contemporary life, and linguists are increasingly studying its influence on language. However, people still debate on the scope of these changes, and whether or not they are for the better. The given paper is devoted to the study of some aspects of Internet slang, its peculiarities and manifestations. We know that keeping up with current internet trends can be tough, especially for parents and elderly people who do not get online much. That is why we feel need for some helpful resources to help people further understand internet slang, online acronyms, net trends, and overall internet etiquette. Professor David Crystal is a British linguist, leading language authority and author of over hundred books. Crystal says the dynamic nature of the Internet makes it difficult for comprehensive analysis of its effects to stay up-to-date. But Crystal believes that the impact of the worldwide web on language remains minimal. In his book " Internet linguistics " David Crystal presents the area as a new field. Crystal addresses the online linguistic issues that affect us on a daily basis, incorporating real-life examples drawn from his own studies and personal involvement with Internet companies. He provides new linguistic analyses of Twitter,

REVIEW OF LANGUAGE AND THE INTERNET The Biggest Language Revolution Ever Meets Applied Linguistics in the 21st Century Language and the Internet

That the Internet invokes profound opportunities for language educators and students has been long discussed (with some of the better examples published in this very journal). In his 2001 book, Language and the Internet, David Crystal only sporadically mentions educational issues or contexts, but this does not diminish the importance or relevance of this book for applied linguists. Crystal, a prolific linguist who has authored numerous scholarly and reference texts on a variety of language related topics, turns his attention in this volume to the language practices visibly mediated by the Internet. In a personal preface to the volume, he mentions that as a prominent linguist, he has often been asked about what effect the Internet has had on language, a question for which he did not have a clear answer. This prompted him to explore a variety of what he terms "Internet situations," each of which comes to form a chapter in this 272-page volume.

Linguistic Dimensions of Initialisms used in Electronic Communication

The language of electronic communication is a new variety of language. Electronic communication leads to remarkable variations in written form of English language because it has its own lexicons, grammar, graphology, and usage conditions. Hence, the Internet users use acronyms, abbreviations and Emoticons, which express and covey their thoughts and ideas. The use of the Internet and computer technology have led to the development of an English language Acronyms that emerged in instant messages, emails, social networks, chat groups. The present study aims to explore and investigates the language of electronic communication (e-mail, chats, and web-based discussions and SMS messages). It also aims to identify the linguistic features (Initialisms) that used in written English in the communication done via the electronic devices. Hence, Initialisms considered part of online discourse. This study also focuses on how the language of the Internet has unique linguistic dimension and its implication on the learning of English.

LEXICAL INSIGHTS INTO THE E-CULTURE OF FACEBOOK-SCAPE

In: LITTERA Edebiyat Yazilari, ed. by Cengiz Ertem & Tuna Ertem, Vol. XXIII, 2013, Ankara: Ankara Press, pp. 189- 199.

Enjoying its popularity among the wider public and receiving an ever-growing number of hits by millions of active users on a daily basis, this article draws attention to the popular social networking site called Facebook (FB) from a lexical point of view. Facebook is approached primarily as a lexical field as well as a virtual linguistic landscape with its own "Facebookspeak" inviting some incisive linguistic comments. The article aims to examine Facebook-scape with special emphasis on word-formation processes of vogue words which seem to rule the contemporary Cyberworld and its digital community. The FB word-lore is analysed semantically, thus drawing attention to some dangerous paths the English language has taken as well as from the point of view of word-formation. The article puts to the test the hypothesis that given the fact that Netspeak generally prefers to abbreviate writing, it may rightly be assumed that shortening should rank among the most frequently employed word-formation processes within Facebook-scape.

Forda Ferson: The Morphological Structure of Generation Z Slang in Social Media

Journal of English as a Foreign Language Teaching and Research, 2023

Filipino Generation Z's creative ability to experiment with morphemes is a factor in the emergence of new words. These lexical items possess the capacity to function as nouns, verbs, and adjectives within the Filipino language. This study aims to examine how Filipino Generation Z slang terminologies are formed if such terms undergo a particular process that adheres to a specific morphological structure and if new sets of rules are observed that are not included in the current morphological rules. Since the researchers used words to analyze the gathered data, a qualitative research design utilizing content analysis was employed in this study. This study employed homogeneous sampling, with researchers extracting only Generation Z slang from the Facebook posts of PNUV first-to fourth-year students as the corpus. The framework matrix was used to determine the morphological processes underlying Generation Z slang. Consequently, it was determined that word formation processes such as coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, acronyms, affixation, conversion, and multiple processes were utilized to create Generation Z slang. In addition, the data revealed additional word formation processes, such as contraction, reduplication, and spelling change. Most Filipino Generation Z slang word formation was categorized as a change in spelling. Future researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how the Filipino generation z's language is shaped and how it differs from previous generations by examining linguistic patterns and word forms.

Neologisms in Social Networking Among Youths

2019

With the emerging social networks and technology, communication between people regardless of the geographical distance becomes easier and smoother. Communication utilises vocabularies, and some of the new vocabularies, words or terms used are not even officially established and recorded in the dictionary. The newly formed words are based on different processes and the processes are termed as morphological processes. Neologisms are significantly different from the existing English vocabularies structurally. According to Murray (1995), many morphological processes were adapted to create neologisms especially for English conversations such as abbreviations, acronyms, compounding, derivation and loan words. Users‟ creativity to communicate faster and more interestingly has accelerated the transformation language rhythm and words. Limitation in the number of characters allowed by social networking platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp escalates the phenomenon.

Today’s Usage of Neologisms in Social Media Communication

Društvene i humanističke studije (Online)

Referring to a newly formed word that accommodates the usage of a language at a particular time, the term neologism presents a relatively recent or isolated term, word, or phrase that may undergo the process of entering everyday usage, but that has not been fully accepted into language. They appear to be strongly influenced by changes in society, especially in culture and technology, and recently by rapid advancements in internet-based communication. However, due to their significant use, they seem to be widely and quickly accepted in social networking sites around the globe (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp). These social networking sites have had a significant impact on everyone nowadays as they improve and speed up communication, foster relationships and also boost business ventures. The hypothesis of this paper states that neologisms created by different morphological processes are excessively used in internet-based communication, for which purpose the examples from fou...
