Quick Response Code Abstract: The oral health of pregnant mothers is one of the important factors affecting their health and their fetus health. Due to the poor oral hygiene of pregnant women and the requirement of appropriate solutions for this issue, gathering sufficient information on the oral health of the target population is essential. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the oral health status of pregnant mothers referring to the educational centers Al-Zahra and Tabriz Dental School. Method and material: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 60 pregnant mothers during the first half of 2019. Gingival diseases are quite common during pregnancy. Aim A study was done to determine dental knowledge and gingival health of pregnant women. Materials and Methods The survey was done on 208 antenatal women attending Government Maternity Hospital, Chennai. The dental knowledge was assessed by a close-ended questionnaire. Oral hygiene and gingival health were assessed using Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified and Gingival Index. Statistical analysis using McNemars Chi Square Test and Karl Pearson's Correlation test were done to evaluate the data. Results More than 96.6% (201) of the women had good dental knowledge. Mild, moderate and severe gingivitis was found to be 49.5% (103), 46.6% (97) and 3.8% (8), respectively. 7.2% (15), 66.8% (139) and 26% (54) had good, fair and poor oral hygiene, respectively. Background: Oral health of women is often neglected during pregnancy. In a woman’s life, during the phases of puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, there are changes in the body which lead to a decline in oral health. The poor oral health can become home to various microorganisms and source of complications. A pregnant woman is at high risk of developing various oral conditions such as oral tumor, oral lesions, gingivitis and periodontitis. This is due to their body responding differently to bacteria and plaque. Furthermore, poor oral health has been associated with pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, preterm or low-birth-weight infant and gestational diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study is to determine the percentage of gynecologists aware of oral complications during pregnancy and also to identify the types of complications faced in pregnancy due to poor oral health. A sample population of 100 gynecologists residing in the Chennai city were given a questionnaire.
Oral health-related quality of life among pregnant women at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia

This cross sectional study aimed to determine oral health-related quality of life in pregnant women. A total of 100 pregnant women seen at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia participated in this study. The short version of the Malaysian Oral Health Impact Profile (S-OHIP(M)) questionnaire with five-point ordinal scale that ranges from 'never' to 'very often' was used to assess the frequency of oral impacts during the previous 12 months. The majority of the respondents were Malay (96.0%), with a mean age of 29.9 years (SD 5.78). The highest education level attained by most respondents was post-secondary qualification or Diploma (39.0%). Some had formal tertiary education (27.0%). The majority of them were income earners (74.0%) and contributed to the household income. Half of the respondents were in their third trimester of pregnancy while the remaining half was either in the first or second trimester. The severity of impact experienced by the women, which is the mean S-OHIP(M) score was high at 10.43 (95% CI = 8.96, 11.90). The prevalence of impact, which is the percentage of respondents reporting 'fairly often' or 'very often' to one or more impacts, was 36.0%. Common impacts experienced by the respondents include feeling uncomfortable because food got stuck in between teeth or dentures (22.0%), feeling that oral health problems had caused bad breath (13.0%), and feeling shy because of problems with teeth, mouth or dentures (9.0%). The results also demonstrated that neither the severity nor the prevalence of impact was influenced by the women's socio-demographic background. This study concluded that pregnant women suffered from high impact of oral diseases that could affect their quality of life.

The gestational period must be the focus of attention by dental professionals, with a view to promoting oral health and preventing diseases that affect the oral cavity. Several factors can promote the manifestations of oral alterations during pregnancy, especially hormonal changes and the presence of bacterial plaque due to inefficient oral hygiene. In view of this, developing new ways of clarifying the possibilities of treatment and the meaning of chronic conditions as factors of harm to oral health is fundamental for the promotion of oral health in pregnant women. OBJECTIVE: To discuss the importance of implementing strategies to promote oral health during pregnancy, as well as highlighting the dentist's role in achieving the maintenance of the mother's general health. METHODOLOGY: The present study is a review of the literature with a quantitative approach and descriptive character. The articles were obtained after searching the Database: VHL. Database: LILACS and BBO. With the use of keywords: Oral health, Pregnant women and Health Education. As inclusion criteria: full text available, articles in Portuguese, articles published between the years 2012-2022 and original articles. RESULT: The lack of knowledge about oral health makes many pregnant women continue to practice wrong habits, causing many oral pathologies. Therefore, it is necessary to disseminate correct information about dental treatment during pregnancy, in addition to reinforcing the training of dentists to serve this specific public. CONCLUSION: Based on strategies implemented by dentists in prenatal care, the pregnant woman can act as a multiplier agent of preventive information, thus contributing to the promotion of oral health.
