Annotation The process of modernisation of the Hungarian urban transport was happening simultaneously in four fi elds between 1867 and 1914. 1. The creation of modern transport infrastructure. The roads and sidewalks were paved mainly with stone, ceramite and asphalt. Bridges, under-and overpasses were built. 2. Traffi c became regulated, fi rst on a local (ordinances, instructions of the city's police chief), later on a national level (laws, decrees of the Minister of Interior). Lefthand traffi c was ordained by law. The fi rst traffi c signs appeared on the streets. 3. The rise of vehicle traffi c began at the expense of pedestrian traffi c. The progress of technical sciences and technology allowed the motorization of the means of transport to advance. As a result, traditional animal-drawn vehicles were slowly replaced by mechanically driven vehicles from the 1890s. 4. In Hungarian cities that were at the forefront of modernisation and urban development, local public transport started up and its network was developed. The fi rst pieces of Hungarian literature on the subject were published.

Railway Traffic in Southwest Hungary After World War II

Pro et Contra. Central European Studies In Humanities, 2018

Immediately after World War II, the only transport available in Hungary was the railways and this was despite the heavy damage incurred by the rolling stock and tracks. By utilizing service reports, meeting minutes, and articles from local newspapers, this study attempts to present the Hungarian State Railways’ (MÁV) regional directorate of Pécs’s efforts to reconstruct their railway infrastructure and service. Not only is this research’s focus on the railways’ operation processes—e.g., the eradicating of inefficiency, the reconstruction of rolling stock, and the establishing coal reserves, but also the impact of the political, economic, and social arenas on railways and vice versa. As the most influential company in Hungary, the importance of MÁV’s operation was not only a reflection of its role as an economic tool in the government’s hands, but also that it proved to be the most powerful employer in the country with thousands of families directly depending on it.

Mobility, Transport and Logistics in Modern Cities Program in Hungary

XII. International Conference on Logistics in Agriculture 2018, 2018

With the centralization of Hungarian development policy new type of national development actions have appeared. Such an action is Modern Cities Program, which affects the Hungarian cities with county rights. Thanks to this program these cities will be the winners of the current EU budget cycle in Hungary. The essence of the program is to secure the development of cities with county rights, which is confirmed in a form of a cooperation agreement between the cities and the central government. Though the program does not have any official conceptual documentation, ex ante evaluation or any public project list, we have tried to determine the goals of the program and to gather all of its projects. We found 258 projects, but the costs are estimated only in 28 cases and in 9 cases the content of the projects is really not clear. The government talked about a €10.960 million budget of the program, but we could calculate only €8.944 million. This paper is about the mobility, transport and logistics dimensions of Modern Cities Program, and we would like to give a detailed description of the affected development projects and their impact on cities.

The effect of the reduction of the Hungarian railwaynetwork in 2009 on accessibility

2011

There are two aims of this study. Firstly, to give a quantitative overview on the changing railway accessibility due to the reduction of the railway network in 2009 in Hungary. Secondly, to discuss various forms of detour indices, the main method of analysis. From previous quantitative analyses of the Hungarian railway network, Csaba Kovacs’s (1973) study is to be noted, in which he analysed the geographical location of 197 settlements on the railway network. Gabor Szalkai’s (2001) study included dynamic comparisons in addition to the static characteristics of the railway network at that time. In addition, it described the impacts of unmounting the circular railway network due to the Treaty of Trianon after the First World War, of mutilating the branch line network after 1968, and of a potential new Kecskemet-Dunaujvaros-Szolnok line on accessibility. The present study diverges primarily in two aspects from these analyses. On the one hand, it concerns a smaller railway network after...
