Developing Inventory Management in Hospital

Single inventory policy has been applied to entire types of drugs in hospitals, despite several different drug and demand characteristics. Shortages regularly occur, which may affect patients' lives, especially when vital drugs are being administered to them. However, hospitals cannot store a large amount of every drug because of limited space and budget. The objective of this study was to develop a hospital inventory management system to minimise the total inventory costs, while maintaining patient safety levels. The study is concerned only with the medicines that have a high consumption value and took place in a large public hospital in Thailand. The most suitable policies are proposed for each drug category with the best performance obtained. The historical demand is classified by drug characteristics, consumption value and clinical importance, as well as the demand characteristics. We applied it and compared it with the current inventory policy (Min/Max), and inventory policies from previous studies, in order to investigate the most suitable inventory policy for each drug category and demand characteristic. The study found that a single inventory management system cannot be effectively applied for all medicines. It is because there are also categories of medicines characterised by their value and clinical importance. This is called the ABC/VEN classification. The inventory management in hospitals should be fitted to drug categories and demand characteristics, which are quite unique in the healthcare supply chain and are different from those applied to general manufacturing.
Inventory Management of Medical Consumables in Public Hospital: a case study

In healthcare service sector, inventory management and distribution has important role in determining its success. Besides medicines, most of hospital inventories are medical devices and consumable goods such as syringe, bandage, and etc. This study is aiming to observe inventory management and d istribution of medical consumables in public hospital and provide solutions for problems that often happened. The methodology of this paper is a case study at a public hospital in Indonesia as developing country. This study is preliminary research, which is future research is to make the optimal scenario of medical consumables inventory and distribution which is can reduce the cost significantly. The result of this paper is there are four most important factor that must be concerned in managing hospital inventory and distribution of medical consumables, efficient use of resources, collaboration with other departments to give customer service imp rovement.
Optimizing Multi-Item Inventory Management Decisions in Healthcare Facilities

Healthcare costs in the United States continue to grow at a significant rate. In many healthcare settings material supply and inventory management represent significant areas of opportunity for managing healthcare costs more effectively. In this dissertation, we explore three topics related to these areas. In the first chapter, we propose methodologies to help clinicians store medications and medical supplies optimally in space-constrained, decentralized Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) located on hospital patient floors. This is significant for many reasons: first, locating and storing medical supplies and pharmaceutical products within automated dispensing devices on patient floors is often not done efficiently and these devices are not utilized optimally. Technology Assessment for an Inventory Management Process in a Hospital Unit
The penetration of Auto Identification and Data Capture Technology (Auto ID DC) in healthcare logistics is low. A recent American Health Association (AHA) study shows that 16% of hospitals use barcode technology for supply chain management purposes, and 3% use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Hospital materials managers find it difficult to evaluate the impact of Auto ID DC technologies on current processes in order to make a decision about whether or not to adopt a technological alternative. This paper studies the impact of Auto ID DC technologies on the inventory management process in a hospital unit. In particular we will refer to implantable devices within a catheterization lab. We propose a conceptual design of the system and a quantitative modeling approach to handle these issues, and present our preliminary results from a spreadsheet-based tool.

Optimal Health Care Inventory Management Using Analytics
Inventory Management is an important issue for health-care systems because it influences clinical and financial decisions. Before selecting, adapting and implementing a process for Inventory management, it is important that the various factors affecting Inventory management are carefully considered. The objective of this paper is twofold. First, it proposes an analytic model for hospital inventory management commodities, which would be able to predict the future demands of various inventory commodities. The model takes into account previous demand, population and geographic Location and other factors to successfully predict the future demand. Second, the paper suggests an optimization model that would minimize the cost involved in supply chain & logistics management so that the required commodities can be made available to the hospitals at the minimum possible cost. A web based portal is proposed to facilitate the hospitals to optimally distribute future inventory requirements among the different vendors.

Hospitals and clinics provide an essential service to the populace, assisting people to overcome a range of ailments. In order to do so physicians are reliant on the tools and inventory they have at their disposal. When stock levels appear frighteningly low or even become depleted, physicians begin to order more than the ideal amount causing overstocking and consequently, wastage. Literature on healthcare supply chain management has shown that the lean system can provide significant benefits.It known that success in lean management doesn't come with employees but through current technology and clinical perfection.The effort of serving society causes hospitals to spend Money on new technology and new fields which they know that this must be adapted in their favor and with a profit. Furthermore it is stated that that the highest waste and confusion in a hospital is with inventory. So lean inventory system in healthcare is the system that focuses on timely replenishment of items.
