1 ABSTRACT This paper describes possibilities and examples in which augmented reality solutions can be implemented in planning and participation processes, based on an analysis of the results of the project "ways2gether-Target-group-specific use of augmented reality and web 2.0 in participative traffic planning processes". An augmented-reality-demonstrator based on the free metaio Mobile SDK was developed as part of the project ways2gether. This new communication and information tool was practically evaluated in three test cases to show the benefit in planning and participation processes in transport planning. Augmented and Virtual Reality Applied for Innovative, Inclusive and Efficient Participatory Planning

The research project VR-Planning aims to investigate improvements in participatory planning processes through the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to allow stakeholders to experience designs of buildings and public spaces before they are built. The biggest challenge for participatory planning is to include stakeholders from various backgrounds and with diverse knowledge. Thus VR-Planning examines how AR and VR can be used to optimally support participation in different application areas at different planning phases to facilitate a swift and effective decision-making process. This paper summarizes results from three user experience workshops with citizens and a workshop with an interdisciplinary group of professional planners and academics. Finally, an outlook with usage scenarios in future planning and design projects is provided.

We present an early study designed to analyze how city planning and the health of senior citizens can benefit from the use of augmented reality (AR) with assistance of virtual reality (VR), using Microsoft’s HoloLens and HTC’s Vive headsets. We also explore whether AR and VR can be used to help city planners receive real-time feedback from citizens, such as the elderly, on virtual plans, allowing for informed decisions to be made before any construction begins. In doing so, city planners can more clearly understand what design features would motivate senior citizens to visit or exercise in future parks, for example. Augmented reality (AR) allows objects to be digitally simulated in the real world through smartphones, tablets, and headsets. While there are interesting AR technology case studies in participatory urban planning, this type of research has yet to be conducted within a real-life municipal planning scenario. Following the UN Habitat recommendation that further studies in AR as a participatory tool seek to integrate planning with real citizens, we studied the use of AR for the Oslo Trees plan in Norway. The case study consists of field work with AR between 2020 and 2021 over five weeks, with five different groups of youth participants from eight different districts of Oslo, who were tasked with planning a portion of Oslo's 100,000 new trees. We document how these youths used AR in films, images, drawings, interviews, screen recordings, and recorded presentations. We find that AR is a highly intuitive tool for these youth user groups in design and planning and how the AR schemes impacted the final design of the plan. The use of AR aided users' ability to generate their own planning proposals on site at scale; nearly all participants increased their understanding of participation, urban planning, architecture, and design in the workshops. In addition, the youths experienced an increased sense of confidence in displaying their design intentions and appreciated being given control of the planning process. However, we also found that location tracking and positioning in AR is imprecise and often "buggy" in the current state of the technology, causing irritation among users. Furthermore, despite the high degree of control afforded to users through AR, experts were still needed to verify which tree proposals were viable, offering important insights into how AR could be designed in the future. We conclude with a discussion on opportunities and barriers for the implementation of AR in participatory urban planning, pointing to the need for a more coordinated and holistic approach to both AR technology development and planning policy if the technology is to be developed further for participatory urban planning.
APPLICATION OF AUGMENTED REALITY &VIRTUAL REALITY IN ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING:AN OVERVIEW
AR and VR-simulation tools created to assist global evolution for saving time. Time as resource is difficult to harness; however, it would make work highly efficient and productive when tackled with automation. All concerned are excited about AR and VR's involvement in our lifestyle, but not all have comprehended its impact. AR and VR in Architecture & Planning were introduced as assisting tools and has helped generate multiple design options, expanded possibilities of visualization, and provided us with more enhanced, detailed, and specific experience in real-time; enabling us to visualize the result of work at hand well before the commencement of the project. These tools are further being developed for city development decisions, helping citizens interact with local authorities, access public services, and plan their commute. After reviewing multiple research papers on AI, it was observed that all are moving forward with the changes brought by it, without entirely understanding its role. This paper provides an overview of the application of AR & VR in architecture and planning.

Mobile devices wide spreading in the population of all ages along with the availability of mobile augmented reality technology enable new kinds of mobile applications that change the way residents and visitors interact with the city and its environment in general. These unparalleled applications attract focus the interest of Destination Branding Organizations which try to exploit the new mobile communication media in order to promote their tourism product and reach their target groups in a highly competitive market. Among the content-based, participatory and leisure kinds of such mobile applications, this paper focuses on the leisure ones. Leisure applications category includes mobile augmented reality serious games, which appear more difficult to design and develop due to the required collaboration of experts from many different fields e.g. learning design, games design, historians, writers, technology experts and tourism marketing experts. In the paper, existing examples of leisure applications are examined in order to outline their design principles and then the rapid prototyping methodology is utilised for the development of a particular leisure game design which will be used as a test bed for experiments.

The authors present a method that processes various environmental factors during a visit and uses these factors as a context for presenting the recommendations. In this work, the authors also propose a method that can measure queues in a city, and by knowing the overall picture of the situation, it provides individual recommendations of separate mobile devices accordingly. This chapter shows, therefore, the three main steps in the process of recommendation systems: collecting information, processing the recommendations, and presenting them in an attractive way. In this case the authors focus on presenting recommendations through augmented reality in order to provide an attractive tool for end users, which would, at the end of the day, connect them further to the city over the Internet.

A comprehensive, systematic planning method to design mobile Augmented Reality (AR)-applications in the range of production planning is not available. A target driven development process to match mobile AR-applications to the methodical needs of production planners is therefore proposed in this paper. The development process will be presented with special focus on the user integration. The incorporation of production planners, their intrinsic knowledge and engineering methods needs to be considered. Therefore, the paper will introduce how user relevant aspects will be identified and considered during the application development.

Augmented reality is nowadays a novel technology that is acquiring great relevancy as a research area. This technology complements the perception and interaction with the real world and allows placing the user in a real environment augmented with additional information generated by computer. Throughout last years it is increasing the interest and the results reached in the technologies of augmented reality on desktop environments. However there are numerous environments of application of these technologies that require mobility of the user, need of access to the information at any time and any place, in these cases there becomes necessary the utilization of mobile devices. Construction Sector is a clear example. The development of mobile computing solutions is crucial in construction sites. The permanent change of the site (workers, activities, work place, etc.) implies that users need to get permanently updated information. Mobile computing solutions make this information available without reducing or disturbing the mobility and agility of the users. In this paper we present the mobile augmented reality as an advanced and innovative tool for the construction sector. This technology has a high potential to achieve more sustainability, profitability and higher quality level in this sector. It is structured in two main sections. An initial one that analyses the current status of the augmented reality technologies using mobile devices and describes the benefits provided by these technologies, the most recent challenges achieved, the novel applications and the problems not yet solved. And a second one that analyses the potential applications of the mobile augmented reality in the construction sector and describes a scenario in which the use of mobile computing solutions makes possible to increase efficiency and safety in construction sites.
