Awareness and Utilization of the Internet Resources and Services for Academic Activities by the Academics of Tertiary Institutions in Adamawa State, Nigeria

This study was conducted to investigate the awareness and utilization of the Internet resources and services for academic activities by the academic staff of tertiary institutions in Adamawa State. The researchers adopted a quantitative research method using cross-sectional survey design to collect data from the respondents. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used. Three hundred and thirty-three (333) copies of the questionnaire were administered to the respondents in the eight (8) sampled institutions and two hundred and ninety-two (292) respondents representing (87.6%) were returned and found useful. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics by the use of SPSS version 20.0. The findings revealed that respondents were aware of all the Internet resources, (e-books, e-journals, and online databases), but regarding the Internet services, they were mostly aware of only the e-mail. The study further found that online database and e-mail as the most Internet resources and services utilized by the respondents. There are inverse and weak relationship between awareness and utilization of the Internet resources and services by the academic staff of tertiary institutions in Adamawa State. The study recommends increase awareness and use to other Internet resources such as the e-books and e-journal and Internet services, especially Usenet, Discussion group and Telnet by the management of the institutions through training, workshops/conferences for better academic activities.

Internet Use by Academic Staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria

With the evolution of media, Information and Communication Technology globally, Internet has been a major tool in academic activities. To this end, this study was carried out to evaluate the Internet use by academic staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria. A total number of 100 copies of structured questionnaire were administered out of which 81 were retrieved. Data generated from the respondents were analyzed using frequency count and percentile. The analysis of the data revealed a positive indication on the usage of Internet by the academic staff of the Institution. It was however, observed that most of the lecturers do not have access to Internet facilities in their respective offices as well as inadequate training on Internet search knowledge. Utilisation of Internet Services and Its Impact on Teachingand Research Outputs in Private Universities in South-Western Nigeria

This study investigated the utilisation of Internet services and their impact on teaching and research output in two purposively selected private universities in SouthWestern Nigeria. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data collection. Questionnaires were administered to 214 academic staff, selected through simple random sampling technique. In-depth interviews complemented the quantitative data. The utilisation of Internet services aided 54.3% of the respondents to publish their works, 61.6% to attend conferences and 74.2% to teach. Two thirds of the respondents reported that the utilisation of Internet services had also improved their quality of teaching (77.5%) and research output (79.1%). Most of the respondents used Internet services to meet the requirements for career advancement, especially promotion. Internet services or facilities were found to have contributed to the increase in teaching and research outputs of academic staff of the universities in the study and had the potential for enhancing the teaching and research outputs of respondents in the future.

The Impact of Internet Usage: A case study of Delta State (Nigeria) tertiary institutions

The Internet is one of the greatest recent advancement in the world of information technology and has become a useful instrument that has fostered the process of making the world a global village. However, despite the added benefits of the Internet to learning, teaching and research, there is no provision of effective Internet services in most of the tertiary institutions in Delta State. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the Internet for learning, teaching and research in institutions of higher learning in Delta State. Questionnaires were administered to students and staff in four tertiary institutions within the State. The results from the analysis of the responses showed that students and staff use Internet mainly for on-line chatting (24.89%) and e-mail (24.16%). The use of Internet as a source of research materials ranked third (23.21%). This study concludes that research would significantly improve through proper enlightenment, formal training on the use of Internet and provision of effective Internet services in tertiary institutions in Delta State.

Perception of Universities Lecturers on the Influence of the Internet Usage on Education in Nigeria

The study worked on influence of Internet Usage on Education as perceived by the lecturers in Nigeria Universities. As a guide to the researchers, two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated. The researcher adopted post hoc design. Structured questionnaire titled “Internet and Nigeria Education” (INE) was employed to generate data from 147 lecturers that participated in the 2nd Faculty of Education Conference organised by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria held between 18th to 22 November, 2011. Percentage scores was used to answer the research questions at index scores of at least 50% for agreed and Simple Logistic Regression (SLR) was employed for test of the null hypotheses at 5% level of significance. INTERNET USE AMONG FACULTY MEMBERS OF COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN SOUTH-EASTERN NIGERIA

This study is a descriptive survey which aims at finding out how faculty members in colleges of Education in south eastern Nigeria make use of the internet in their professional practices. A sample of 350 lecturers was proportionately randomly taken from faculty members in the colleges in the zone. A set of researcher made questionnaire tagged Internet Use Scale (IUS) was used to collect data from the respondents. Data collected was subjected to analysis using frequencies, percentages, t-tests and ANOVA. Findings revealed that Self-instruction, trial & error; organised training and workshops and Colleagues & friends assistance are the major source of internet training for faculty members. Similarly, Personal Laptop with modems; Personal mobile phones and Public cybercafé are the predominant mode of internet access available to faculty members. Significant differences exist between male and female faculty members with regards to internet use and frequency of use. There were also significant differences in internet uses and frequency of use between groups of faculty members according to teaching experience. The result has far reaching implication for provision of adequate training on Internet use in teaching and facilities to enhance effective teaching and learning in the colleges of education in the zone.

This research work is a study on the Impact of Internet Usage on Academic performance of undergraduate students using University of Abuja, Nigeria as a case study. The research design adopted was the survey method using questionnaires as the instrument for data collection. The population of the study was the entire students of the University of Abuja, with students randomly selected from each level making a total sample of 375 students whom were issued questionnaires. Out of the 375 questionnaires distributed, 200 were dully responded to and returned to the researcher. Data collected were analysed using inferential statistics, frequency table and percentage. The findings revealed that Internet is one of the beneficial tools in this era of IT not only for business but for academic point of view and enhances the skill and capability of students which assist them in studies and professional life. It also revealed that some of the problem encountered in the usage of Internet includes lack of computer skills, slow internet server and problem of paying for online services. The study recommends that the university should embark on Information literacy/sensitization programme for student's in order to effectively harness the various web based electronic resources it is subscribed to.
