Greening the Hotel Operations: Puerto Princesa Experience

The study was conducted to assess the extent of implementation of green practices in the housekeeping and food and beverage departments among standard hotels in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan with respect to solid waste management, water conservation and energy utilization. The descriptive design was utilized in this research. Respondents of this study were the supervisors and staff of the Housekeeping and Food and Beverage Departments of the 13 standard hotels in Puerto Princesa City. Using total enumeration, 52 hoteliers were asked to answer the survey questionnaire to be able to come up with data needed in the study. Frequency counts, percentages, means and Analysis of Variance were used to interpret and analyze the data gathered. Among the three groups of green practices included in the study, solid waste management obtained the highest mean for both the housekeeping department and food and beverage department which indicates that green practices under this category are the most extensively implemented. Conversely, respondents from the housekeeping department rated green practices related to energy utilization as the least implemented while food and beverage department respondents revealed that green practices pertaining to water conservation are the least implemented. Using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the responses revealed that there is no significant difference in the extent of implementation of green practices in all the three categories that were studied within hotels. However, a significant difference among hotels was found out when it comes to the extent of implementation of green practices for the same categories.

This study explores the green practices of the hotel industries in one of the cities in Northern Mindanao, Philippines with the intention of utilizing the findings as basis for the implementation of a proposed environmentally appropriate programs. The study gave emphasis on the participant’s extent of awareness and participation towards green practices of the hospitality industry in the city in terms of green energy consumption, water and liquid waste management, air quality management, solid waste disposal management and noise control management. The 1990s highlighted the creation of new business dynamics focused on environmental responsibility. In the tourism sector, hotels have incorporated this concept in an attempt to improve the efficiency of natural resource use and quality of life. As a result, sustainable technologies and practices became part of the management strategies of many companies and new legal obligations and business incentive programs have arisen. Through interdisciplinary analysis, this study analyzed environmental management in hotels through the incorporation of sustainable technologies and practices and considering guests’ requirement of social and environmental responsibility. By means of questionnaires answered by hotel owners/managers and guests, the study assessed environmental management in hotels using a sustainability index. The overall level of sustainability in hotel management in João Pessoa, Brazil was considered intermediary and guests’ requirements regarding environmental matters were high.

Green Practices in Northern Region Hotels of Malaysia
Objective – The objective of this paper is to examine green practices of hotels located in Northern region of Malaysia. Methodology/Technique – The sample of the study is 115 hotels in Penang, Kedah and Perlis. Questionnaires were personally delivered to each respective hotel. The response rate for the survey is 43%. Findings – Findings from the survey indicate that hoteliers have started to show a positive sign towards adoption of green practices such as usage of power saving bulbs, water conservation, and recycling management program. Novelty – The study urges more campaigns on awareness and the benefits of green practices. And, it will indirectly educate the hoteliers and society at large on the importance of saving the Mother Nature.
GREENING THE SUPPLIES FOR HOTEL OPERATIONS
BACKGROUND The study investigates supplier group's intent in greening of supplies by the application of the Value-Additions to hotel operations. It examines the supplier groups which are subsidiaries co-owned by chain of star hotels and the value additions they explore to offer. They interrelate to their intentions in greening the services/supplies to star hotels which are their parent properties but also to several other star hotels where they operate. Data were gathered by face-to-face surveys, conducted by trained interviewers in Pune, India. Greening is treated as a vital activity and also as a strategy to beat the competition. Sustainable supplies attract pervasive interest and support not only the hoteliering companies in the hospitality industry but also the wellness industry. In view of such growing concerns, hotel operations are adopting and implementing effective remedies to prevent further deterioration caused to the ecosystems and encourage restoration of environment protection. Progress made in the choice of green supplies still remains vital and is also a pivotal challenge in current times. The hoteliering business is an integral part of tourism sector which is a prominent service sector. Star hotels have a profound impact and a major role in changing the supplies in line with the environmental practices being followed while achieving sustainable growth patterns. The city of Pune, India has shown a steep growth in hotels by reaching its inventory of more 32 new star hotels in the organised sector between 2003 and 2013 as per HVS International (2013). It has the potential to make positive contribution in following some green practices, by cautiously using resources catered to matured clientele who express their care to protect the resources and environment for the future generations. This paper, with help of review of literature and three case studies of hotels discusses the issues and practices of hospitality and helps in understanding the importance of greening the supplies and best practices in the hotel industry for sustainable development.
The study focuses on the analysis of green practices of selected hotels in Olongapo City as element of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) towards a Best Unified Environmental and Natural Opportunities (BEUNO) framework for the hotel industry. The researcher used the descriptive cross-sectional design by employing a self-administrated and closed-ended questionnaire to survey the participants within a specified time frame of the study. The ten conveniently selected hotels in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) were taken from the directories of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the City. Thus, there were 10 hotel employees and 10 guests (consumers) from each hotel, who served as participants during the conduct of the study. The adopted checklist was subjected expert validity and reliability test. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 2.0 (SPSS 20.0). Turning off lights and appliances in unoccupied rooms, taking advantage of the natural lights, and replacing damaged doors/ windows are the observable green practices. Encouraging guests to report water leaks is at all times observed, while collecting rainwater for irrigating or other non-potable use, and presoaking utensils and dishes in ponded water instead of using a running water rinse are frequently done. Solid waste and pest management practices are also done. Eliminating bird nests; making the rooms free from trash and checking for cooking odors, ensuring the ventilation system, and cleaning spills promptly are constantly observed among hotels. Preserving existing vegetative cover, pest management, grounds keeping and green food service management are regularly practices. There is no significant difference in the assessment of the participants on energy and water conservation, solid waste and pest management, indoor air quality maintenance, and grounds keeping. However, there is significant difference on building renovation and mold growth prevention practices. The BUENO framework should be adopted for sustainable social responsibility of green hotels.
Impact of Hotels on Environment: Features of Green Hotels to Overcome Environmental Pollutions

Abstract: This exploratory study is about the impacts of hotels on the environment. It explores a few salient features of green hotel as well. It is observed that hotels have direct negative impact on environmental surroundings and makes eco-friendly citizens decry the practice of “green” in hotel and tourism industry. In practice, green hotels are usually eco-friendly and put due emphasis on preserving natural environmental settings. Such practices offer several benefits to the hotel owners and its employees, and the guests. As a far reaching benefit, turning green hotels can achieve financial and physical benefits . The green hotels do conserve energy, water and reduce solid waste making them environment-friendly. In recent times, some hotels, located in different parts of the world, have already started their green campaign and activities. Among others, Adrere Amellal, Daintree Eco Lodge and Spa, Hotel Mocking Bird Hill, Soneva Fushi Resort, Gaia Napa Valley Hotel and Spa are world-famous. By green practice, it is possible to minimize the negative impacts of human behavior on environment. Practicing green also effects on the cost of management. And through green practices, hotels can contribute a lot to a great extent to green tourism all over the world. Recommendations are forwarded for the hoteliers to exercise green for the welfare of the planet earth. It is expected that in the near future its practices will spread throughout the world.
Guest Perspective on Sustainable Actions in a Lodging Facility in Southern Brazil. Case Study

The aim of this study was to analyze the perspective of guests in a lodging facility related to the environmental aspects of the activity, especially about solid waste, and also to determine how far these aspects influence the decision making regarding the choice of hotel.The case study was conducted in a hotel focused on business tourism, located in Pelotas, southern Brazil. Questionnaires were available for guests at check-in, offering the option to participate in the research. Out of 240 questionnaires handed, 120 returned answered (n=96). Although the majority of guests who answered (99.2%) consider the development of environmental practices in this business relevant, only 43.3% observe this factor and make it determinative to choose a lodging facility. Furthermore, a large portion (14.2%) did not know about sustainability actions practiced by the enterprise in which they were staying.
