The role of metacognitive beliefs in depression: Mediating role of rumination

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of metacognitive beliefs in depression by the mediating role of rumination. Method: The present study was conducted with a correlational method. Therefore, 275 students of the University of Tabriz were selected using a stratified sampling method. Beck’s depression inventory, Wells’ metacognitive questionnaire and Treynor’s rumination questionnaire were used for data collection. Data were analyzed by path analysis using the LISREL Software. Results: The results of the present study indicated that there was a positive relationship between positive and negative beliefs of worry and rumination schemas. Besides, there was a positive relationship between these beliefs and depression. Regarding to the fitness Indexes, the mediating role of rumination in the relation between positive and negative metacognitive beliefs and depression was confirmed. SUMMARY Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the reliability and validity of the Turkish adaptations of the Positive Beliefs about Rumination Scale (PBRS) and the Negative Beliefs about Rumination Scale (NBRS) in clinical and non-clinical samples. Method: While the non-clinical sample of the study consisted of 455 participants, the clinical sample was composed of 60 major depressive disorder (MDD), 30 panic disorder (PD) and 30 social anxiety disorder (SAD) cases. Results: The results of the factor analyses confirm the construct validity and original factor structure of the scales. Findings obtained from internal consistency and test-retest analyses indicated good reliability for the scales. Supporting the convergent validity of the scales, the correlations between metacognitions about rumination and depressive symptoms, rumination, metacognitions about worry, pathological worry, and anxiety symptoms were found to be positive and significant in the non-clinical sample. A meta-mood model of rumination and depression: preliminary test in a non-clinical population

Depressive rumination and trait meta-mood (emotional attention, emotional clarity and emotional repair) have been suggested as vulnerability factors leading to depression, but less is known about the associations among them. In this study, we examined the relationships between trait meta-mood, rumination and depressive symptomatology. Using structural equation analysis in a large sample of a non-clinical population we found a preliminary test of the role of trait meta-mood dimensions in rumination and depressive symptomatology. Results indicated that attention to feelings has two pathways in its relation with rumination and depressive mood. On the one hand, emotional attention was associated with emotional clarity, and emotional clarity with emotional repair, which was related to lower depressive symptomatology, in part, by reducing rumination. On the other hand, emotional attention was directly associated with ruminative thoughts which, in turn, were related to higher depressive mood. Findings are discussed in terms of the implications of beliefs about emotions in the treatment of depression.
Rumination and co‑rumination: Factors predicting depression
Aim: All groups and individuals especially students are supposed to be at risk of getting involved with depressive disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between rumination and co-rumination among students of Isfahan University. Methods: This study benefits from both causal-comparative and descriptive-correlative research methods. The participants were bachelor students of Isfahan University. Using simple random sampling, a sample of 234 students from 10 colleges of Isfahan University was selected. They were evaluated based on three research tools such as the second edition of Beck's depression indicators, response rumination scale, and co-rumination questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and regression. Results: Results indicated that rumination (P < 0.001) and co.rumination (P = 0.009) had significant and positive relationship with a total score of depression. Furthermore, the correlation of all three rumination subscales and all subscales of co-rumination except for subscale in which “the person in question encourages his friends to discuss problems” had positive and significant relationship with the total score of depression (P > 0.001). On the other hand, results revealed that the projection of students with depression in the case of rumination was significant (P ≤ 0.0001, β =0.390). Conclusions: Findings highlighted the predictive value of rumination in students with depression. In addition, this paper identified the importance of training in friendship communicational skills, talking effectively with friends, right thought, and appropriate adjustments of emotions among students.

Self-criticism refers to a series of persistent and negative self-judgements, often involuntary, that an individual makes about themselves. Recent research has explored the possibility that self-criticism can lead to a more perseverative style of thinking called self-critical rumination. There is evidence that self-critical rumination may be a separate construct from other forms of rumination, such as depressive rumination and post-event processing. Effective Metacognitive Factors in Students’ Depression

This research is done with the aim of examining effective meta-cognitive factors in students' depression. The population studied in this research comprises all undergraduate (bachelor-level) students at Islamic Azad University, Roudehen Branch, studying in the academic year 2008-2009. From among them, 35 depressed and 35 ordinary students were selected via the systematic random sampling method. The instrument in this research was Wells' Meta-cognition Test Depression can be predicted based on the meta-cognitive skills (five skills). The results achieved through administering of Wells' Meta-cognition Test suggested that the difference in means of depressed and ordinary students in the subscales of positive worrying beliefs, uncontrollability and feeling of danger, cognitive ability, general negative beliefs, cognitive self-awareness and the whole meta-cognition is significant.
Metacognition and Interpersonal Sensitivity: A Mediational of Rumination Study in Pakistani Sample

Metacognition is changing, interpreting, and managing one's ideas and thoughts. Rumination and depression are predicted by having specific problematic metacognitive beliefs. The focus of this study was to explore rumination's mediating role in the association between metacognition and interpersonal sensitivity. It included 304 participants selected through convenient sampling from different cities in Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 304 participants were from various schools, colleges, universities, training centers, and Academies of Malakwal, Sargodha, Lahore, Faisalabad, Phalia, and Islamabad. Three scales have been demonstrated to test the hypotheses: Metacognitive Self-Assessment Scale, Ruminative Response Scale, and Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure. Findings suggest a significant positive relationship between interpersonal sensitivity and metacognition. Rumination partially mediated the association between metacognition and interpersonal sensitivity. Various patterns of correlations that surfaced throughout this investigation are thought to have significant practical relevance. Future studies should go deeper into the connection between these constructs.
Correlation among meta-cognitive beliefs and anxiety – depression symptoms

Metacognition is cognizing the beliefs including views and opinions which persons have about the events such as thoughts, emotions, memories, scenes and their comprehensions. Objectives of this study are to survey the interaction of these Metacognitive beliefs with the symptoms of anxiety and depression between the Allameh Tabatabei University Students. Therefore 260 students of this University were selected by the help of method of multi-methods clause. For measuring Meta-cognitive beliefs the sampled community was given the MCQ-30 questionnaire and for measurement of anxiety and depression two scale of anxiety and depression the test of depression, anxiety and stress(DASS-21) was used. Data were analyzed by the method of Pierson Correlation and forward multivariate Regression. The results indicate that the Meta-cognitive beliefs especially "negative ones is related to the uncontrollability and danger" and "low cognitive confidence" has positive relationship with anxiety and depression (negative emotions). Also the results of regression show that between the Meta-cognitive beliefs, the factor of negative Meta-cognitive beliefs in case of uncontrollability and danger is the best predictor both for depression and anxiety. The approaches of this study support this prediction in which the experience of negative emotions such as anxiety and depression has positive and meaningful relation with the Meta-cognitive dimension experiences and support the S-REF model and this approaches says that the treatment of such symptoms related to the depression and anxiety must use the S-REF theory.
