A Novel Technique for Image Steganography Techniques Based on LSB and DCT Coefficients (original) (raw)

An analysis of LSB & DCT based steganography

Global Journal of computer …, 2010

This paper presents analysis of Least Significant Bit (LSB) based Steganography and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) based Steganography. LSB based Steganography embed the text message in least significant bits of digital picture. Least significant bit (LSB) insertion is a common, simple approach to embedding information in a cover file. Unfortunately, it is vulnerable to even a small image manipulation. Converting an image from a format like GIF or BMP, which reconstructs the original message exactly (lossless compression) to a JPEG, which does not (lossy compression), and then back could destroy the information hidden in the LSBs.

A Secure Image Steganography using LSB, DCT and Compression Techniques on Raw Images

2005 3rd International Conference on Intelligent Sensing and Information Processing, 2005

Steganography is an important area of research in recent years involving a number of applications. It is the science of embedding information into the cover image viz., text, video, and image (payload) without causing statistically significant modification to the cover image. The modern secure image steganography presents a challenging task of transferring the embedded information to the destination without being detected. In this paper we present an image based steganography that combines Least Significant Bit(LSB), Discrete Cosine Transform(DCT), and compression techniques on raw images to enhance the security of the payload. Initially, the LSB algorithm is used to embed the payload bits into the cover image to derive the stego-image. The stego-image is transformed from spatial domain to the frequency domain using DCT. Finally quantization and runlength coding algorithms are used for compressing the stego-image to enhance its security. It is observed that secure images with low MSE and BER are transferred without using any password, in comparison with earlier works.

A steganographic method based on DCT and new quantization technique

2012 22nd International Conference on Computer Theory and Applications (ICCTA), 2012

In this paper, an efficient data hiding technique based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT) of image is proposed. In this technique, the DCT coefficient is quantized using a predefined mathematical operation then the secret bits are embedded in all frequency component of the quantized DCT coefficient using least significant-bit (LSB) to enable a large message capacity. A comparison between the proposed method and other existing methods is introduced. The results demonstrated that the performance of the proposed method is satisfied compared to them.

A Secure Image Steganography Using Advanced Encryption Standard and Discrete Cosine Transform

Journal of Information Security, 2019

Cryptography and Steganography are two prominent techniques to obtain secure communication over the shared media like the Internet. Steganogra-phy is slightly ahead of cryptography because of its stealthy characteristics. In this paper, a new method has been proposed which combines cryptography and steganography to ensure even more secure communication. The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in spatial domain of the carrier/cover image and Least Significant Bit (LSB) replacement in the transformed domain of the same image has been used after performing a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) on the pixels. An additional layer of security has been introduced by applying XOR operation on the AES encrypted message with the pixel values of the carrier image. The Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) of the proposed algorithm is better than most of the similar algorithms. With better PSNR, the proposed method depicts a three layer of security of the information and error free decryption.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF IMAGE STEGANOGRAPHY USING LSB,DCT AND DWT TECHNIQUES

. Steganography is the technique of hiding secret message within another message such that no one except the sender and the intended receiver suspects the existence of a secret message [1]. This hidden message can be plain text or even images. Image steganography is the art of inconspicuously hiding image within an image. In today’s world, there are a number of legitimate uses of steganography. This paper aims to provide a comparative analysis between various existing techniques such as LSB ( Least Significant Bit ) ,DCT ( Discrete Cosine Transform ) and DWT ( Discrete Wavelet Transform ) on four different aspects namely, undetectability, robustness, capacity and PSNR value. Our analysis shows that DWT is comparatively better. We also performed the noise analysis for the above methods. We used MATLAB version R2010 for our entire analysis.

Secure and Secret Transmission of Messages Using the DCT Technique of Steganography

2014

Steganography is the art and technique for hiding the secret message in some cover. The cover may be an image or audio or video. Similarly, the message to be sent may be anything like some form of text, any form of the image etc. There are many techniques available for doing the same. In this paper, we are trying to present the new technique which is Discrete Cosine Transformations and the Vector Quantization for improving the capacity of the cover medium.

Security of Digital Images using Steganography Techniques based on LSB, DCT and Huffman Encoding

In insecure communication, data hiding techniques have an important role to protect private/important information from unauthorized access. Steganography is a hiding technique that hides the secret information inside the digital medium in undetectable manner. We believe that a good steganography technique requires high embedding capacity without compromising security as well. In this paper, an image steganography method based on combination of LSB, DCT and Huffman Encoding is proposed. Two 8 bit gray level images are used, first one as a cover image and second as a secret image. Before embedding the secret image inside cover image, Huffman Encoding is applied on the secret image to reduce the payload and hence embedding capacity is increased. Then Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is applied to obtain DCT coefficients of cover image. DCT coefficients are used to select random pixel locations for hiding bits of Huffman codes. The stego image is a result of hiding each bit from Huffman code of secret image in Least Significant Bit of the cover image at random locations based on threshold. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm has high embedding capacity and good invisibility of secret data. PSNR value is used to compare the result with other existing Steganography approaches. In addition, high security is maintained since the secret image cannot be extracted without the knowledge of decoding rules, Huffman table and the Key Matrix.

Encryption based LSB Steganography Technique for Digital Images and Text Data

Digital steganography is the art and science of hiding communications; a steganographic system thus embeds secret data in public cover media so as not to arouse an eavesdropper's suspicion. A steganographic system has two main aspects: steganographic capacity and imperceptibility. However, these two characteristics are at odds with each other. Furthermore, it is quite difficult to increase the steganographic capacity and simultaneously maintain the imperceptibility of a steganographic system. Additionally, there are still very limited methods of Steganography to be used with communication protocols, which represent unconventional but promising Steganography mediums. Digital image Steganography, as a method of secret communication, aims to convey a large amount of secret data, relatively to the size of cover image, between communicating parties. Additionally, it aims to avoid the suspicion of noncommunicating parties to this kind of communication. Thus, this research addresses and proposes some methods to improve these fundamental aspects of digital image Steganography. Hence, some characteristics and properties of digital images have been employed to increase the steganographic capacity and enhance the stego image quality (imperceptibility). Here, the research aim is identified based on the established definition of the research problem and motivations. Unlike encryption, Steganography hides the very existence of secret information rather than hiding its meaning only. Image based Steganography is the most common system used since digital images are widely used over the Internet and Web. However, the capacity is mostly limited and restricted by the size of cover images. In addition, there is a tradeoff between both steganographic capacity and stego image quality. Therefore, increasing steganographic capacity and enhancing stego image quality are still challenges, and this is exactly our research main aim. To get a high steganographic capacity, novel Steganography methods were proposed. The first method was based on using 8x8 nonoverlapping blocks and quantization table for DCT with compression. Second method incorporates the DWT technique, with quality of any stego images as enhanced to get correct hidden image. And last LSB as to store images with Key type security built in.

Image steganography

Now a days, internet becomes major channel for communicating information one place to other such as text, image, audio, video data. One of the most important factors of information technology and communication has been the security of the information. For security purpose the concept of Steganography is being used. Image Steganography is a technique in which information can embeded secretly by hiding through an image. For these purpose we used Data compression, it's is a basic need for transmission of data through the internet. There are two methods transmitting the data. they are lossy and lossless compression methods. This paper presents an existing approach of image steganography using Least Significant Bit (LSB) algorithm and Discrete Cosine transform (DCT) algorithm is to be used to Compressed the images. LSB method mainly focused on adaptiveness of LSB's replacement and pixel adjustment for improving the capacity of hiding data. And the jpeg standard compresion DCT algorithum based on lossy technique for image compression.
