Entrepreneurial Skills Needed to Operate Vocational and Technical Enterprises in Nigeria

The study was a survey research designed to determine the entrepreneurial skills (personality and general) needed by operators of vocational and technical establishments. The study was conducted in Southeast , Southsouth and Northwest zones of Nigeria. Out of a population of 557 vocational and technical establishments, 459 with minimum of seven employees were purposively sampled and their owners or managers were involved in the study. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection.
Entrepreneurial ability is the capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit. It includes the application of professional knowledge, innovative ability and social ability. Entrepreneurial education is a prerequisite for addressing the problem of unemployment of school leavers (secondary and tertiary education graduates) in Nigeria as it prepares and equips them for their future pursuits. The study adopted for the study is the survey research type of the non-experimental design. Vocational and Technical Entrepreneur students from the Polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria participated in the study. The population consisted of all polytechnic students who are offering entrepreneurial courses in his or her departments. The Purposive sampling design was adopted in selecting the 100 students. Data collected were analysed using descriptive (percentages) and inferential statistics (correlation) at 0.5% level of significance. It is inferred from the results of the study that students' have a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship education; students have a great deal of entrepreneurial ability and students' entrepreneurial ability can positively and moderately affect their attitude to Entrepreneurial education. Moreover, the study recommended that educational stakeholders encourage students at all levels (especially at the tertiary) to put in more passion and time into entrepreneurial education as this will foster their ability viz a viz their attitude in the subject.

This study looks at the current curriculum of two programmes run in Accra Polytechnic: namely Secretaryship and Management Studies on one hand and Fashion Design and Textiles on the other and students’ readiness towards venturing into entrepreneurial ventures. The former programme is geared towards the acquisition of skills to serve industries and businesses whilst the latter is basically the acquisition of skills geared towards entrepreneurial ventures. Due to the nation's growing graduate unemployment rate and the economic downturn, which is a contributing factor to poverty in the nation, the need to develop entrepreneurial skills among undergraduates of technology and vocational education in tertiary institutions has now taken on a national dimension. Lack of technical skills, which can be acquired in technology and vocational education, have been linked to graduate unemployment, adolescent delinquency, and the majority of adult crimes. Many social reformers, professional sociologists, educators, and writers believe that technology and vocational education is the solution to the majority of social problems. Due to its influence on the development of skills, technology and vocational education (TVE) is one of the greatest promoters of economic progress in any developing country. In order to reduce poverty in Nigeria, the focus of this article is on ways and strategies that could be used to cultivate and disseminate entrepreneurship skills among technology and vocational education students. The development of entrepreneurial skills for TVE undergraduates was assessed using such approaches, which included the mix of contemporary teaching methods including role play, project method, field excursions, and demonstration among others in a strategic manner. It also looked at additional approaches to teaching entrepreneurship skills. It was suggested, among other things, that the connections between educational institutions and industries should be strengthened in the area of student industrial work experience, allowing students to explore the opportunities of self-employment through the practical and direct involvement with local industries. The students' ability to manipulate machines and other tools, which they will need for self-employment after graduation, will be aided by this.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceived entrepreneurial competencies required by Automobile Technology students in Technical Colleges in Bauchi and Gombe states of North Eastern Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 265 consisting of 96 Automobile Technology Teachers and 169 Automobile Technology Entrepreneurs. The study was guided by three research questions and three hypotheses, formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The instrument used for the study was a structured questionnaire which was face and content validated by three experts. Cronbach Alpha reliability method was adopted to determine the internal consistency of the instrument which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.82. The study sought to identify measures for improving the acquisition of entrepreneurship skills in technology education by the polytechnic students in the south-south states. Structured questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data from the respondents. The population for the study comprised 35 teachers of technology; the sampling technique was of “convenience type”. Data were analyzed through the used of mean and standard deviation while Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that entrepreneurship skills, creative, business techniques were needed in technology education. It was therefore recommended that graduates of technology education should be dedicated to creating a society as their future and fortune would be determined by their abilities and dedication to entrepreneurship skills.

The study investigated the human capital development needs of Nigeria students for entrepreneurship education through career and technical education. Four research questions and four null hypotheses guided the study. Population for the study was 473,455. Proportionate random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 8477 subjects. A structured questionnaire of 47 items was developed to collect data. Three experts validated the instrument and Cronbach alpha method was used to determine the reliability co-efficient which yielded 0.83. Data collected was analyzed using Mean to answer research questions and t-test statistic to test the null. Thus, this study examines students" competence and attitude towards entrepreneurship among business education students" in Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos. The population of the study covered all students offering entrepreneurship among business education students in Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos. The sample for this study comprises of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents. The sampling techniques that was used for this study was based on stratified and simple random sampling technique. The Business Education students were divided into four strata namely: Accounting, Office Technology and Management Education, Marketing and Entrepreneurship departments out of which each using simple random technique hat and kind method. Data was collected through the use of questionnaire. Simple percentage was used to analyze the demographic data collected from one hundred and twenty respondents. The study was designed to explore the existing state of entrepreneurship education taught at colleges of education Nigeria towards enhancing entrepreneurial attitudes among vocational and technical students. A survey research design was used to collect the data from a randomly selected sample of 432 final year students across six colleges of education in the north-eastern Nigeria. The study used multivariate method of data analysis via SPSS version 22.0 to analyse the data obtained from the sample and to test the hypotheses in the model. The authors used cross sessional data to test the hypotheses on impact of entrepreneurship education on the students’ entrepreneurial attitude. Technology Vocational Education (TVE) is one of the greatest facilitator of change in any developing nation due to its impact on skill acquisition and a panacea for poverty alleviation. This paper focused on strategies that could be used to impart entrepreneurial skills among TVE undergraduates for poverty alleviation in Nigeria. Such approaches as the combination of the use of modern teaching methods like role play, project method, field trips, and demonstration among others in a tactical manner necessary for entrepreneurial skill development of TVE undergraduates were x-rayed. It was recommended among others that collaboration between schools and industries should be strengthened in the area of students practical work experience.
