Strengthening the Internal Factors of Batik Cluster SMEs in Indonesia: A Case of Six Districts in South - Central Java

The aim of this study was to identify the internal factors that limit the growth and the success of Batik Cluster SMEs in South District of Central Java and to suggest recommendations for addressing such factors. This study uses qualitative research method. In-depth interviews have been performed, which included participant from six batik SMEs and from six officials representing six organizations in the six districts of south part of Central Java. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted in Banyumas and it explored the depth and nuances of opinions regarding factors affecting the development of batik SMEs clusters (i.e. education, raw material, marketing, partnerships, technology, capital, cooperative, and coordination among instititutions). The phenomenon of co-opetition, which is also called ‘sleeping with the enemy’, is becoming increasingly important with the wider of global competition. The implementation of sustainability-oriented practices in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has been discussed frequently over the years. Recent studies on sustainability have focused mainly on links between ecological and economic sustainability. This exploratory study aims to explore institutional barriers and facilitators regarding the implementation of sustainability-oriented practices in the Indonesian batik industry and to provide policy recommendations. The Indonesian batik industry is well-known for its cultural heritage and for being part of the Indonesian identity. Batik products are mostly hand-crafted by women crafters. Business Model Innovation is the key to develop and improve the company's strategy to survive and sustain. Nevertheless, the existing Batik communities often find it difficult to innovate their business model. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nine components of the business model canvas, in Batik communities, Giriloyo and Kricak Kidul village, Yogyakarta. Creation of corporate knowledge is generally recognized as crucial for innovation. Through a combination of tacit and explicit knowledge, companies can develop a concept or model of operation that is not easily imitated, and which can serve as the main source of their competitive advantage. Unfortunately, not much research has been done on how this ‘corporate knowledge’ is created, so both theories and information on knowledge creation is limited. This study attempts to examine select cases of creative creation of such knowledge in the traditionally family run batik industry in Java, Indonesia. The results of this study reveal that such a process of knowledge exists in the batik industry and is one of the factors that allow it to thrive. Collective contribution of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to economic growth is evident in many countries worldwide. On the other hand, however, it contributes also to environmental burdens the world already suffered today. This paper suggests that sustainable SMEs growth is attainable through Open Innovation (OI) concept. A model is developed with the aim to evaluate the role of OI in reducing SMEs environmental impact. The model development is conducted in two stages; first is identification of relevant variables. This is done by reviewing relevant OI models and select variables based on statistical characteristics; second is building logical relationships between the variables based on interviews and literature reviews. The development is iterative so each iteration can bring new information and update the model. Final model is presented in a causal loop diagram (CLD) and discussed.

The availablity of Information technology in IR 4.0 demands the ability of SMEs to build a culture to foster competitiveness. This study aims to test a model to improve Sustainability Competitive Advantage based on Innovation Culture, Adaptation Capability and IT Adoption. This type of research uses explanatory research, to test the proposed hypothesis. Data was collected from 106 Batik SMEs owner of Central Java and Yogyakarta through a questionnaire and analysis using SmartPLS. The results shows that SMEs need to strive for the development of an Innovation Culture, in the form of creating new product and services and finding new market opportunities for running their business. Innovation Culture is useful for fostering adaptability in the form of creating change, focusing on services, and developing knowledge. The Innovation Culture that has been formed also has an impact on the ability to apply information technology, namely relative advantage, adaptability, and practicality. Adaptation Capability and Technology Information Adoption that has been formed in SMEs, can help to increase Competitive Advantage so that it continues, marked by increased cost reduction, differentiation and quality.

Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) in Indonesia plays an important role in social and economic growth, due to great capable to survive and raise their performance during economical crisis than larger firm. But the increasing of business competition, in particular against large and modern competitor, put SMEs in a vulnerable position. The development of sustainable SMEs becomes important step to strengthen and sustain Indonesian economy. According to previous studies, factors affecting success among Indonesian SMEs are marketing, technology, capital access and human resources quality. Batik SME Marketing Model: From Conventional to Community

The contribution of this research is to fill the gaps in the literature on community marketing, especially for batik SMEs. The purpose of this research is to construct a batik SME business performance model by including entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and cognitive bias (CB) variables, marketing strategies, and the role of the community on business performance. The data of 309 respondents was obtained from a survey of batik SMEs in Central Java, Indonesia. It was then analyzed using structural equation models and AMOS software. It was found that CB can affect business performance mediated by EO. Meanwhile, the existence of a batik SME community can influence business performance mediated by marketing strategies. Future research needs to explore the dynamics of community formation which can then help SMEs to develop and market their products. Besides that, it is necessary to further investigate the role of the community in carrying out marketing, from conventional methods to community marketing.
