One of the thorniest issues regarding language in education in the majority of post-colonial countries is the issue of the language(s) of instruction. This study examines how Moroccan high school science teachers perceive the language of instruction when teaching scientific subjects. The Frame Law 51 17, which stipulates the use of foreign languages in the teaching of scientific subjects, is the point of departure. As such, the study main objective is to explore the appropriate language(s) of instruction in regards to the teaching of scientific subjects from high school science teachers' perspective. In this study, a questionnaire was administered to 66 high school science teachers randomly chosen. The questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS. In parallel, interviews were conducted with nine science teachers which were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's 2006 Thematic Analysis. Different results were revealed most importantly the positive attitudes that science teachers have towards English as a means of instruction, the incompatibility of language planning and policy (LPP) with the teaching/learning process needs inter alia. These results can be seen of great importance for syllabus designers, researchers in the field and teachers to understand more the nature of the issue. Accordingly, some recommendations to better the teaching/learning process regarding scientific subjects are suggested.

The research purpose serves to examine the issue of introducing foreign languages as a tool of instruction through “linguistic alternation” in the teaching of non-linguistic subjects. By exploring the attitudes of Moroccan scientific and technology teachers concerning the changing of the teaching language from Arabic to French. As well as identifying the challenges that prevent them from using “linguistic alternation” in their teaching practices and proposing relevant solutions to promote the quality of teaching. The study built upon a quantitative approach, by using a questionnaire instrument. The survey involved 86 science and technology teachers in secondary schools of the Provincial Directorate of National Education Inezgane Ait Melloul. The data were analyzed with SPSS statistical software. The results showcase that the majority of teachers seem to rather agree with the implementation of linguistic alternation by adopting French language as a teaching language. Hence, students' lack of French language skills was the main obstacle to understanding and assimilating courses in scientific and technical subjects, which hinders the application of linguistic alternation in the classrooms. However, teachers suggest the need to introduce compulsory French support courses at elementary and secondary level.
English medium instruction (EMI) in Moroccan secondary schools: Science teachers’ perception
Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching
The present study explored a small-scale English medium instruction (EMI) initiative in Moroccan secondary schools, which is part of a top-down multilingual policy based on teaching science subjects through foreign languages, namely French, English, and Spanish. 18 secondary EMI teachers of math, physics and life and earth sciences were interviewed in order to understand the new policy. Following grounded theory (GT) methodology, the findings show positive attitudes towards the implementation of EMI in Moroccan education, but the teachers seemed unsatisfied with the way it has been implemented. They thought science teachers were not prepared for such a new tendency. The study also revealed that teachers’ low English proficiency was considered the major challenge to the successful implementation of EMI in Moroccan secondary schools and the essential reason behind using the first language in the EMI classroom. To prepare future generations for extending EMI in the Moroccan education, ...

The main purpose of the present study is to examine teachers' perceptions, practices and experiences concerning the adoption of language alternation in the teaching of science at secondary level. The study was carried out among Moroccan secondary school teachers. To achieve our objective, data were collected through semi-structured interviews. In all, 14 teachers were met and interviewed. The results revealed that science teachers use language alternation in the teaching of science subjects. In addition, they noted an improvement in the level of their learners. However, teachers often resort to their mother tongue to facilitate the transmission of disciplinary knowledge. To overcome this issue, teachers employ pedagogical practices such as the use of educational technologies, supervised discussions and diversified methods such as the experiential method.
Students' Views of Science Education Challenges in Morocco: A Focus Group Study
Language in India, 2019
Students' perspectives of science education are of critical importance as they constitute one of the major stakeholders whose views are necessary for any enhancement of science education. The main objective of the present paper is to identify the extent of the effect of the change in the medium of instruction from Arabic to French at tertiary level on students' learning of science and thus on the quality of science education. To this end, the study employed focus group interview to explore students' experience and perspective of science education. The main focus was on the linguistic and educational factors that negatively influence learning science. The results show that the most dominant factors that influence students' understanding of scientific concepts relate to proficiency in French, translation from and to Arabic, learning through practical work, and communication. The findings have important implications for science education, language policy, and science curriculum design in Morocco in particular, and in other non-western contexts in general.

Currently, given the rapid growth of knowledge, technology and scientific theories. today we are faced with the challenge of reforming science education. In order to make the student learn the scientific culture and not the scientific content through the good understanding of the nature of science (NOS). This study aims to examine which aspects of NOS (Nature of Science) are addressed by life and earth science curricula in Morocco. Program analyses focused on the following aspects of science: empirical, tentative, inferential, creative, theory-based, and social, as well as the myth of the "scientific method," the nature of scientific theories, and the relationship between science and society. We present the analysis grid by adopting a broad definition of NOS from works on the same theme in several fields (philosophy, history, sociology, psychology). We discuss the main results obtained from the analysis of life and earth sciences programs by specifying what image of science is transmitted by the programs and its implications in classroom practices.

In this work we investigate the place and the importance of environmental education (EE) in Moroccan high school education with a focus on Physics/Chemistry and Biology/Geology classes. It is performed within a comparative method by using an interdisciplinary approach in order to understand the presence and the pedagogical styles adopted for the implementation of EE in both disciplines. This study is accomplished via an anthropological theory of knowledge to analyze textbooks and a questionnaire administered to 90 teachers of these disciplines throughout different high schools in Oujda academy, Morocco. The analyses of collected data were performed by adopting a statistical descriptive method. Results show that the presence and the importance of EE are mediocre and its contribution to learning activity is dominated by informative pedagogical style. Similarly, questionnaire results reveal that the implementation of EE in their practices cannot enable learners to construct competencies and skills that would help them adopt a positive behavior towards the environment because first, the presence of EE in their classes is almost absent especially in P/C classes, second, teachers' practices are overwhelmed by the informative pedagogical style. Furthermore, respondents have never benefited from basic and in-service training and their interdisciplinary professional collaboration is totally lacking.
Teaching science subjects in Arabic: Arab university scientists ’ perspectives
Abstract: This study investigates Arab university scientists ’ views of the status of English and Arabic in the 21st century, and their attitudes towards using English and Arabic as media of instruction in science faculties in the Arab world. Twenty-seven science instructors at a Saudi University coming from different backgrounds responded to a written survey, and the data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings reveal that the majority of the science instructors preferred to use the students ’ mother tongue (Arabic) to teach science, even though the current policy is to use English as the medium of instruction. The results indicate that, from the perspective of Arab scientists, English as medium of instruction in Saudi universities presents academic and social challenges in science education at university undergraduate level.

This paper aims to shed light on the distinct challenges that Moroccan science-major postgraduates are facing, particularly at the end of their academic year, to publish their end-of-term projects in English. The article also uncovers certain weaknesses and misconceptions concerning the existing instructional methods. As an assistant professor with substantial experience teaching science-major students, a few alternative teaching practices will be discussed and recommended in the teaching of English in Moroccan universities, instead of the overused, traditional methods. In doing so, university students were interviewed and asked to rate some of what they thought were the best activities in English classes. As regards the research methodology, surveys and interviews were conducted first hand. The questionnaires were structured in advance with students who attend English classes. Through this instrument, data was collected on the students’ attitudes and their vision of the best practi...
Teachers’ View of Language(S) in (Clil) Science Education: A Case Study in Portugal
Problems of Education in the 21st Century
The development of meaningful environments at school for the learning of Science as well as of foreign languages is an educational concern. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), aimed at the students’ acquisition of both the foreign Language and specific subject Content, is an approach that may promote the learning of English in use during subject classes and could result in the improvement of conditions and practices of Science education. Research, actually, reveals that teaching methodologies aware of language – such as CLIL – and other semiotic modes implied in Science are beneficial for the learning of Science. Studying a CLIL programme (“English Plus” project, EP), in which Science is taught/learnt with/in English, is thus relevant. A case study on the EP project and its participants (English and Science teachers, students involved in different school years) in one lower secondary state school in Portugal was carried out. In the present research, qualitative data col...
