The rural school can be one of the main spaces for human transformation, when historicity and local knowledge are taken into account. Therefore, it is essential to have an adequate structure and to recognize mechanisms for building the identity of the subject in the field. Thus, it fosters the development of a sense of belonging that can transform the location where the school is located. In this context, this work aimed to characterize the State School of Campo Padre Antônio Vieira - Elementary School, located in the district of Rio Bonito, municipality of Francisco Alves, Paraná (PR) regarding aspects of environmental education and sustainability. Thus this end, the qualitative aspects were mainly addressed, using documentary research methodologies, environmental perception and focus group analysis. The data obtained were categorized according to the content analysis methodology. From the information obtained, some sensitive points related to the sustainability tripod were observed, such as: In the environmental aspect, it was found the lack of actions aimed at environmental education and few correct environmental practices; In the social aspect, the absence of the feeling of belonging to the school community, devaluation of the teaching-learning process and abandoned garden; In the economic aspect, the families' financial difficulties were observed.

An Action Research on Improving Environmental Sensitivity of Fourth Grade Primary School Students: What Happens in the School Garden?

International Journal of Education & Literacy Studies, 2023

School gardens, which play an important role in environmental education, provide an opportunity for students to develop environmental awareness and gain environmental responsibility. In this study, which draws attention to this, it is aimed to reveal the applicability of the workshops prepared in the school garden in order to improve the environmental sensitivity of the students. The research was carried out with 10 female and 10 male 4 th grade students in a public primary school in the city center of Bartin in the 2021-2022 academic year. The research was carried out with the action research design, one of the qualitative research methods. The data of the research were obtained through a scale developed by Peker (2020) and a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers. Quantitative data obtained using descriptive statistics and dependent group t-test statistical procedures; qualitative data were analyzed with content analysis technique. As a result of the research, it has been determined that environmental education workshops are effective in increasing students' environmental awareness. Students stated that environmental education activities are fun, useful and instructive. As a result, it is seen that the workshops applied in the school garden increase the environmental awareness of the 4 th grade students and the process has a positive effect on them. As a result of the research, it can be suggested that environmental awareness should be brought to students through school gardens and reflected in educational environments by organizing various activities that encourage positive attitudes.

Article Attitudes toward Sustainability and Green Economy Issues Related to Some Students Learning Their Characteristics: A Preliminary Study

2014

The present paper proposes and describes a new method, called L2A (listen-to-apprise), conceived of in order to improve the commitment of all the participants involved in an educational process specifically dedicated to sustainability and the green economy. The first stage consists in listening to the students and, when possible, in listening to the environment, the people, and the territory, while, in the second stage, the acquired information is used to exploit everyone's talents and to achieve the maximum advantage and satisfaction for all. The first phase of L2A is mainly dedicated to listening to the students via the submission of an on-line questionnaire that measures their learning preferences, self-efficacy and sensitivity to the themes of sustainability and the green economy. The investigation has been extended from Italy to Honduras, where the authors are involved in the development of major projects concerning sustainability. The results of the survey have been analyzed by means of standard significance and correlation analysis, and therefore, significant differences among the groups and correlations within each group have been detected. The results have been discussed in order to explain how the L2A method Sustainability 2014, 6 3485 works and how useful and powerful a tool it could be to improve teaching, learning and practical activities.

The Improvement of Eco-school Students’ Environmental Awareness in the Context of Education for Sustainable Development

Nowadays the humankind strives to reach higher and higher standards of living, disregarding the consumption of natural resources in their comfort and failing to think about what they will leave behind for the future generations. As the person's quality of life depends on the environment in which he lives, it is important to change his environmental awareness in the context of sustainable development. The younger is the person, the easier it is to develop environment-friendly behaviour in him. Eco-school is one of the ways of "greening" students' thinking. The aim of the study has been to find out how students' environmental awareness is developed in Biology lessons in Grade 7, basing on education for sustainability goals, objectives and cross-cutting sustainable development key competencies. A study has been performed in eco-school A in 2018 involving 38 students in it. During the study the year topic of the eco-school "Waste" was integrated in 11 Biology lessons using diverse teaching/learning methods; students were surveyed and they also did a test. The obtained data were processed using SPSS programme. The results showed that students' environmental awareness had improved: the level of knowledge and skills had increased; the choice of an environment-friendly behaviour had changed a little. However, the acquisition of one topic in one school subject is not sufficient to make students' environmental awareness change considerably in all cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioural domains.

Changes in the environmental attitudes of secondary school students brought about by a project for sustainable development

Developing students' environmental attitude is being given more and more emphasis related to all generations. It was done the changes in secondary school students' environmental attitudes using the big project " Our Environment in the 21st century ". In my study my aim was to find answers to the question what effects the subprojects in the field of the environment have on shaping students' ecologically caring attitudes. There were ten sub-projects within the great project, with an environmental issue in the centre of each, such as air and soil pollution. At the beginning and end of the 12-month project the students were asked to fill in a 36-item questionnaire on attitudes. The questions belonged to one of three groups and twelve blocks. Evaluation of the answers led me to conclude that there were significant differences in several of the experimental blocks compared with the control group. As well as the control groups saw a positive change. Among the three components (emotional, behavioral, environmental) the highest means were measured in emotions, and the lowest in behaviours. Significant difference (p˂0.05) was observed in two cases in the experimental group. The data also shed light on the fact that students' long-term development in environmental awareness requires longer developing work.

An Experience on Environmental Education based on Respect-Reduce-Reuse-Recycle in a Village Primary School in the Marche Region, in Italy

Journal of Education and Practice, 2020

The importance of environmental education is widely recognized worldwide: an important objective is that the citizens are accustomed to apply the best available practices in their life, while asking the administration and the government to gradually enforce measures leading to a reduction of the environmental impact and to a more sustainable lifestyle. This requires a formation starting at an early age: however, in Italy the relevant indications from the National Curriculum are still limited and do not suggest explicitly the performance of any practical activity, tailored on the specific school setting. This inadequacy of the Curriculum becomes particularly apparent in cases where other concerns are present, for example the areas in the Marche region affected by the 2016 earthquake: here, the need to resume a day-by-day routine put a kind of "damper" on other questions, such as environmental issues. This had an effect also in children's life: on this question, school needs to take a stand, which is the objective of this study. This work concerns an approach to environmental education in a multi-classes primary school context (age 6-10) in a small village school, located in the Central Apennine in Italy. This is performed through an experience carried out by investigating the behavior towards waste production of the community, as perceived by children at school. It is therefore articulated through the application of 4R (Respect, which encompasses Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) applying and extending the indications from the Italian National Curriculum. The project leads also to an experience of self-production of objects by the use of waste, to improve their awareness of the possibilities included in their upcycling. Feedback on the experience is finally acquired from the children and discussed, especially in the sense of creating future citizens with a more sensible and reasonable behavior towards the environment and leading possibly to zero-waste strategies in their family and work setting. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis and different themes about waste production were singled out.
