Vulval angiomyxoma: a case report
International Journal of Reproduction, Contraception, Obstetrics and Gynecology
Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare, locally invasive mesenchymal tumor occurring usually in women of reproductive age, which carries a high risk for local relapse; hence it needs to be differentiated from other mesenchymal tumors occurring in this region. We describe a case of a 39-year-old female presenting with a large swelling on the left labia majora. Initially she presented as a small mass over left labia majora 2 years ago from which biopsy was taken which came as acute inflammatory (suppurative) lesion on histopathological report. Now she presented with a mass of 14×10 cm over left labia majora, left perineal region, protruding into the left vaginal wall as well. Clinical examination revealed mass over vulvo-perineal region with variegated appearance and soft to firm in consistency. On per vaginum examination, the mass was extending upto the level of ischiorectal fossa. FNAC of the mass was done and the cytological report came out to be fibrolipoma. In view of benign nature of h...
Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva – A rare entity
Our Dermatology Online, 2016
Aggressive angiomyxoma (AA) is a rare locally invasive soft tissue tumor that is known for its local recurrence. It affects women of reproductive age group. Clinically it presents as a pedunculated polyp or a polypoidal mass usually involving the pelvis, vulva, vagina and the urinary bladder. Excision is the treatment of choice. Due to its tendency for local recurrence long term follow up is adviced. We present AA in a 43year old woman involving the vulva.
Aggressive angiomyxoma of vulva: a rare and interesting entity
International Surgery Journal
We report a case of a 44-year-old female with aggressive angiomyxoma arising from right labia majora. The patient presented with a gradually enlarging vulvar mass and was treatment included wide local excision of the mass with R0 resection. Pre operative and final histopathology was consistent with features of aggressive angiomyxoma. Angiomyxoma is a rare, benign, locally infiltrative mesenchymal tumor that occurs in females at reproductive age. Repeated recurrence and locally invasive characteristics of the tumor makes it important to be considered as a part of the differential diagnosis especially in cases of pelvic mass in females.
A case of aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva
日本婦人科腫瘍学会雑誌 = The journal of the Japan Society of Gynecologic Oncology, 2007
Aggressive angiomyxoma (AA) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of the female pelvis and vulva, which has a tendency for local recurrence. AA is occasionally misdiagnosed as Bartholin's gland cyst or abscess, lipoma, simple labial cyst, or soft tissue tumors. We describe a case of AA on the outside of the left labium majus pudendi in a 28-year-old female. We were able to make the preoperative diagnosis of AA by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US), and to perform complete surgical excision with a transperineal minimally invasive approach. The novelty of this case is the use of ultrasound for the diagnostic workup of the perineal tumor and determination of the incision line.
Aggressive angiomyxoma of vulva and vagina: a series of three cases and review of literature
Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 2011
Background Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare locally aggressive mesenchymal tumor of unknown etiology usually affecting the vulva, perianal region, buttocks or pelvis of reproductive age women. Material A series of three cases, one each of vaginal, vulval and labial angiomyxoma is being presented. The etiology, presentation, diagnosis and management of this rare genital tumor are outlined. Conclusion Angiomyxoma of vulva and vagina refers to a rare disease; diagnosis is not at all clinical, thus, cases presenting as bartholin cyst, benign vulval lesions and vaginal wall cysts should have complete radiological work up before excision, as pre-diagnosis can change the treatment modality and prognosis of patient.
Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva: a case report and review of literature
Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 2008
Background Aggressive angiomyxoma (AA) is a rare vulvovaginal mesenchymal neoplasm with a marked tendency to local recurrence but which usually does not metastasize. Case report We describe a case of AA in the left labium majus pudendi in a 47-year-old woman who underwent incomplete surgical excision. Follow-up 2 years later revealed no recurrence. Conclusion In the past, most authors advocated wide excision even if genitourinary and digestive tract resection were necessary. These days, a less radical surgery is recommended, but the signiWcance of hormonal treatment and/or radiation therapy is not clear yet. Further investigation is necessary.
Aggressive Angiomyxoma of Vulva
Birat Journal of Health Sciences, 2021
Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare, slowly growing, and benign tumor of mesenchymal origin that usually occurs in the pelvis and perineum of young females. Steeper and Rosai in 1983, first described angiomyxoma. The term “aggressive” underlines the tumour’s locally infiltrative nature and high risk for local recurrence. The rate of relapse varies from 35% to 72%, however, it rarely metastasizes so it has an overall good prognosis. Diagnosis is mainly made on histopathology after surgical resection. The optimal treatment for aggressive angiomyxoma is wide local excision with tumor free margin. We here report a case of aggressive angiomyxoma in 22 years female who presented with mass on left labia majora.
Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva - a case report
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 1998
Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) is a rare vulvovaginal mesenchymal neoplasm with a marked tendency for local recurrence, but usually does not metastasize. We describe a case of (AAM) in the left labium majus in a 35 year-old woman.
Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva extending into the pelvis: Report of two cases
Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, 2005
Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare soft-tissue neoplasm found mainly in the female pelvis. Approximately 130 cases have been reported in the literature to date. In most cases treatment consists of surgical resection, but local recurrence rates remain high (36-72%). Therefore, long-term follow up is necessary and magnetic resonance imaging seems to be the preferred method for detecting recurrence. We report our experience of a primary and a recurrent aggressive angiomyxoma.
Aggressive (deep) angiomyxoma of the vulva: a case report
Journal of Medical Case Reports, 2022
Background Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva is a benign, slow-growing tumor originating from myxoid cells of connective tissue. The tumor is known for multiple local recurrences with a low tendency to metastasize. Only around 350 cases have been documented in the scientific literature so far. Case presentation We report a case of a 40-year-old North Indian, unmarried woman with a swelling on the left labium majora for 7 years, along with surface ulceration over the mass. Local examination showed a well-circumscribed, 8 × 8 cm pedunculated mass arising from the left labium majora with an overlying ulcer measuring 6 cm × 4 cm. After taking informed written consent, wide local excision of the mass and surrounding margins was done under anesthesia. Histopathology was suggestive of aggressive angiomyxoma. Immunohistochemistry was done, which was positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors. Her postoperative recovery was uneventful. The patient was given three doses of gonadotrop...
