Severe accidents on Peruvian national and regional roads

Peru is a country with a complex geography. Moreover, it lacks minimal safe roads, higher in Andean and jungle territories. Depending on the classification they might receive, the number of kilometers without pavement can reach up to 80%. Such a rate is alarming, considering that internationally the United Nations promotes actions for road security since road accidents are among the most common causes of death causes in the world. Then, employing data from Sutran, the current research has analyzed how the severity of accidents can affect road administration in Peru roads in 2021. Hence, the multinomial logistic regression was employed due to the nature of the data. It was found that regional routes had a higher risk than national roads when estimating the probability of having many dead and injured people because of a road accident.
Evaluating bus accident risks in public transport

Public transit buses may be considered a safer transportation mode as opposed to others (e.g., private cars). However, safety is a crucial issue regarding transit buses from the perspectives of operators and passengers due to the relevant implications it generates. Therefore, evaluating the accident risk on bus routes provides an opportunity to improve the safety performance of transit operators. Previous research identified patterns of bus accidents and shed light on understanding the effects of many factors regarding frequency and severity of bus accidents. However, no studies have investigated accident risks in bus transit, while considering frequency, severity and exposure factors in a single function. This paper proposes a new methodology for evaluating the accident risk for each transit bus route. At first, the methodology identifies the risk components in terms of frequency, severity and exposure factors that may affect bus accidents. Next, it integrates these terms, to build a risk bus accident function providing a ranking of safety performance for each route. The feasibility of this methodology is demonstrated in a real case study using 3,457 bus accidents provided by a mid-sized Italian bus operator. This experiment shows that transit managers could adopt this methodology to perform an accurate safety analysis on each route. Moreover, this methodology may be implemented in a road traffic safety management system for bus transit operators interested in the monitoring of safety performance, in the evaluation of the risk of accidents on routes, and in the certification process according to recent safety norms.

Transit crashes are a serious social problem for any country, with a significant loss of human lives and economic consequences that are difficult to quantify. This article proposes a characterization of the transit crash rate for urban road safety using time series. A quantitative descriptive study was conducted, characterizing the variables of each crash extracted from the National Traffic Agency of Ecuador (NTA); the data were processed at a descriptive and predictive level for the city of Guayaquil. The first step was an exploration of the scientific interest of the topic with the processing of bibliographic data taken from Scopus and Web of Science articles. Among the results obtained, there is a growing trend of research related to the evaluation of traffic crash through applied statistics. Every day, approximately 155 people die as a result of a traffic crash. In addition, traffic crashes are analyzed based on three indicators: number of crashes, injuries and onsite fatalities. Finally, an adequate performance is found, with very few differences in the forecast of incidents using three times series models, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). It is expected that this study will be valuable for data analysts and decision makers at the security level to reduce human losses related to these events in urban cities with similar characteristics to the analyzed cases.
Bus Rapid Transit Systems Road Safety: A Case Study of Mexico City

The book chapter presents a statistical analysis of historical data of bus rapid transit (BRT) lines A&B accidents that have occurred in Mexico City from 2005 to 2015. Some of the key conclusions are the following: (a) 484 accidents have occurred when considering both lines A and B. The most critical years have been 2008, 2011 and 2012; the least critical year, on the other hand, has been 2010; (b) overall, the frequency of accident occurrence has been decreasing in both lines; (c) the most critical seasons of the year have been the following: autumn (27.7% in line A) and winter (32% in line B); (d) the frequency of accidents increases when approaching the end of the week (Thursday and Friday) and the frequency of accidents decreases sharply at weekends; (e) 48.28 and 54.47% of accidents have occurred at the three peak (i.e. morning, afternoon, evening/night) in lines A and B, respectively; (f) 64.8% (22/73) of pedestrians have been killed when collided with the BRT buses; and (g) the most critical section of the BRT lane has been identified with 38 (11.87%) accidents and for the case of line A. Future work includes statistical significance tests on the data.

Traffic safety in bus transport

Ruter has the overall responsibility for administration of the public transport service in Oslo and Viken in Norway. The main objective of the study is to examine the traffic safety consequences of the requirements that Ruter sets in the contracts with the bus operators. Ruter's direct impact on traffic safety through contracts applies in particular to cases where Ruter requires more than national and international regulations. Interviewees mentioned that there are more requirements for traffic safety in Ruter’s contracts compared with those of other bus administration companies in Norway, including requirements that go beyond EU standards. In this report, however, we propose that Ruter can go even further, and also make demands on, and reward bus companies’ organizational safety management (measures for safety culture, safety management system, fleet management system). OBJECTIVE: To describe the main characteristics of victims, roads and vehicles involved in traffi c accidents and the risk factors involved in accidents resulting in death. METHODS: A non-concurrent cohort study of traffi c accidents in Fortaleza, CE, Northeastern Brazil, in the period from January 2004 to December 2008. Data from the Fortaleza Traffi c Accidents Information System, the Mortality Information System, the Hospital Information System and the State Traffi c Department Driving Licenses and Vehicle database. Deterministic and probabilistic relationship techniques were used to integrate the databases. First, descriptive analysis of data relating to people, roads, vehicles and weather was carried out. In the investigation of risk factors for death by traffi c accident, generalized linear models were used. The fi t of the model was verifi ed by likelihood ratio and ROC analysis. RESULTS: There were 118,830 accidents recorded in the period. The most common types of accidents were crashes/collisions (78.1%), running over pedestrians (11.9%), colliding with a fi xed obstacle (3.9%), and with motorcycles (18.1%). Deaths occurred in 1.4% of accidents. The factors that were independently associated with death by traffi c accident in the fi nal model were bicycles (OR = 21.2, 95%CI 16.1;27.8), running over pedestrians OR = 5.9 (95%CI 3.7;9.2), collision with a fi xed obstacle (OR = 5.7, 95%CI 3.1;10.5) and accidents involving motorcyclists (OR = 3.5, 95%CI 2.6;4.6). The main contributing factors were a single person being involved (OR = 6.6, 95%CI 4.1;10.73), presence of unskilled drivers (OR = 4.1, 95%CI 2.9;5.5) a single vehicle (OR = 3.9, 95%CI 2,3;6,4), male (OR = 2.5, 95%CI 1.9;3.3), traffi c on roads under federal jurisdiction (OR = 2.4, 95%CI 1.8;3.7), early morning hours (OR = 2.4, 95%CI 1.8;3.0), and Sundays (OR = 1.7, 95%CI 1.3;2.2), adjusted according to the log-binomial model. CONCLUSIONS: Activities promoting the prevention of traffi c accidents should primarily focus on accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles that most often involves a single person, unskilled, male, at nighttime, on weekends and on roads where they travel at higher speeds.
Methodological aspects of risk management in road transport

Safe functioning of transport systems depends on the effective management of safety, which is “management by objectives”, i.e. the kind of management system. Its basic principle is: “we manage safety” by “risk management”. The need to describe this problem was the main motivation to write an article. A reminder of the central place of road transport on the “map of transport safety researches”- was second motivation to write this article.
How Operators’ Legal Status Affects Safety of Intercity Buses in Thailand

Legalization is often a policy solution to perceived problems of inefficient and unsafe operation of informal buses in developing countries. Facing the world’s second worst road safety record, the Thai government is set to ban the use of vans for intercity bus services and is considering banning individual operators and requiring them to form a legal entity. A question thus arises whether an operator’s legal status significantly affects bus safety. This paper aims to answer that question by analyzing route-level data on accidents and legal status of intercity bus operators. The results of Poisson and negative binomial regression analyses confirm that the use of vans increases accident and fatality risks of intercity bus services. But the evidence does not support the government’s claim that requiring operators to register as legal entities would make intercity services safer. ABSTRACT We are open to ourselves that the world is in combat against the adverse effects of the CoViD-19 pandemic and probably the Philippines is one of the nation’s going through a crisis triggered by a Coronavirus or COVID-19, which is characterized as a pandemic that has caused widespread harm to people's health and the country's economy. Hesitantly saying, this viral disease takes the lives of civilians worldwide and continuously proliferates. Henceforward, the dedicated researchers of Grade 12 STEM of Saint Augustine School – Senior Highschool are endeavoring to pursue a study regarding the effects of imposed safety protocols to the passengers in Public Utility Vehicles in Tanza, Cavite. The study conducted an online semi-structured interview and disseminated it to the respondents via Zoom conference and Messenger video calls. The findings showcased that the passenger residing at the 7th district of the municipality of Tanza respondents that the ability of safety protocols imposed by public utility vehicles is somehow effective. The findings indicate that there were factors affecting the civil disobedience of the passengers towards safety protocols.
