Investigating the Gender-based Colour Preference in Children

Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2014

This study aims at identification of gender-based colour differences among 7-9 years old children at singlegender schools in an Islamic country. This will help to better understand the effects of certain educational environments on children's tendencies towards specific colors. In this study multi-stage cluster sampling was applied to select a total of 100 students (50 boys and 50 girls) among 7-9 years old children chosen from one allboy and one all-girl elementary schools. The color preference in children was evaluated based on Lüscher colour test and the results were analyzed according to Uman-Vitni and Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric tests. It is found that a significant difference exists between boys and girls tendencies towards four colours including blue, green, pink and black. In addition, it is observed that with age, children preference in yellow colour will vary considerably with their age.

The Effects of Colours on Preschoolers' Behaviour: An analysis of Colour-Mood Association on Preschoolers Aged 4 to 6

2008

Typically set up learning environments for preschoolers often end up, with just an interior that is only furnished with posters on walls, paste-up decorations, toys, and a typical furniture layout. In reality not much consideration or effort is put into the colour concept in the built environment. We should pay close attention to our children as users of the environment because they are in the process of developing physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills. Their interactions with the built environment can have profound effects on their later development in total. Studies have proven that children learn best when the task is challenging while at the same time maintaining low level pressure. Thus, it is vital to provide a cheerful and inviting environment to sustain the attention of our naturally extrovert preschoolers. Our environment is inevitability dominated by colours that help us to understand our surroundings better. Various studies have supported that colours affect us both psychologically and physiologically. Colours can induce sensory stimulation in our emotional realm and the whole of our being. In many occasions, designers lack the confidence and knowledge on how to apply colour to their built environment. The colourist, with very general understanding and views on colours, applies them into their environment, without much thought of the possible psychological associations. A monochromatic environment is regularly chosen and this has resulted in a mundane experience. The purpose of this study is to find out colour preferences among aged 4 to 6 preschoolers and how they relate each colouremotion associations with the specifically given characteristics. The subjects of this study will be an estimated total of 150 preschoolers from several preschools located on Penang Island. Spaces in the kindergartens i.e. the classrooms, playroom, art room, and restrooms will be analyzed on how effective the interior colour setting in each room aids the purpose of usage. Naturalistic observation and unstructured interview will be used for preschoolers while structured interview will be applied to education administration staffs and parents.

Preference for Colour in Food Packaging among Children in Selected Schools in Ibadan Nigeria

International Journal of Innovative Research and Development, 2019

Introduction Colour has many conventions attached to it and can portray messages to children. It is a significant feature in a package. They trigger the fastest response among packages features and have developed into one of the essential visual design elements for the package (Farhana 2012). It is the perceptual characteristic of light described by a colour name. Wenzel, Langer, Kassar and Bencze (2012) define the preference of colour as the tendency to prefer specific colours to others. Some colours, while to others appear less pleasant or neutral, sometimes even repellent, are perceived as pleasant and attractive to another. In a variety of populations and cultures, the colour preference among children has been explored. There is, however, little understanding of colour psychology and literature, especially on colour preference among Nigerian children in Ibadan. Also, factors identified as being responsible for colour preference in populations from industrialized countries may not be the same for people in developing countries, such as Nigeria. Consequently, the present study was conducted to evaluate colour preference in food packaging amongst a group of children in schools in Ibadan, Nigeria. The effects of colour on food choices were investigated by Walsh, Toma, Tuveson, & Sondhi (1990). The test was conducted on 120 children, and the results showed that a significant colour effect indicated that in that order, children preferred foods that were red, green, orange, and yellow. When determining possible colour options for children's product, packaging professionals must keep the children in mind. The type of message the product should give must be establishedto bear in mind children as the target audience. The appropriate colour scheme must also be used. A package could be considered successful if it instils a certain image or message into the mind of the kids. For many years, this would keep them loyal. Packaging professionals should use the appropriate colour scheme for effective designs. Colour is one of the brand's most convincing aspects and conveys a message. Furthermore, colour is a powerful visual cue for attracting children's attention and influencing purchasing decisions. Although the colour is only one attribute of product packaging and does not work in isolation, marketing research emphasizes the significance of colour as a communicator of product and corporate messaging (Won and Westland 2017). The colour of packaging was also recognized as an essential element in children's food choices. Different colours offer different meanings (Madden, Roth and Hewett 2000)and have both symbolic and aesthetic meanings. This is important for marketers trying to convey certain messages about their brand or product. Colour affects whether children will be attracted to the product or not. Packaging constitutes an essential form of marketing communications. Furthermore, Liao et al. (2015) opine that apart from its functional properties, packaging conveys relevant product information and influences children's mood about a product. In packaging, colour is one of the essential components for attracting children. Visible from a greater distance than other elements such as illustrations or graphics, it is often one of the first things children notice. It plays a crucial role in making kids see what you want them to see, feel what you want them to explore and do what you want them to do. In the preoperative stage, children tend to focus on a single stimulus, such as the stimuli found in the colour of the packaging. Perception is a vehicle through which the meaning that a person attaches to a specific stimulus, such as colour, could be determined (Visser 2006).

A Study on Conceptual Associations of Colors in Preschool Children = Renklerin okul öncesi dönem çocuklarindaki kavramsal çagrisimlarina yönelik bir inceleme

Pegem Journal of Education and Instruction, 2019

The study found that children show dominant preference for certain colors in connection with certain concepts and they made consistent spectrum preference for certain concepts. These preferences indicate that the children aged between 60 and 72 months are able to make associations between concepts and colors and attribute meanings to colors in the background, with important hints for the use of colors in designing products and planning learning activities for children.

Students’ Colour Perception and Preference: An Empirical Analysis of its Relationship

Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2013

In learning environment, colour is believe to be able to cause positive or negative behaviour such as avoidance or withdrawal behaviour; affecting performance and stimulate senses. It is learned that visual stimulation contributes to improvement of attention span, develops cognitive abilities and refresh one's perception towards his environment but varied due to differences of gender and background. This paper focuses on perception and preferences of colours for hostel room as a learning environment amongst undergraduate students at Universiti Teknologi MARA and Universiti Putra Malaysia. It aims to verify the previous findings concerning preference differences among gender in a population and extends the method using visible colour survey. 798 students who are also the hostel residents aged between 19 to 27 years old took part in this random survey. The survey recorded patterns of students' colour preferences and recommendation colour for their hostel rooms. The preference survey includes 11 colours (red, blue, green, pink, purple, brown, orange, yellow, white, black and gray) together with colour description in value and saturation level with five point Likert scales. Furthermore, the respondents were asked to indicate 12 emotional responses and nominated their preferred colour directly using visible colour survey method from a three dimensional unit of Munsell Colour Tree. The analysis reveals various patterns of colour preferences when the colour options are visible between genders which significantly influence their preference behaviour. The outcomes become the turning point to investigate the effects of colour on students' alertness during learning activity based on subjects' preferences and existing colour theory.
