APPLICATION OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM) IN ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION: BENEFITS AND OBSTACLES

The Artist Journal (TAJ) 4 (2), 187-193, 2020

In the past four decades, the architecture, engineering and construction industry has witnessed a growing transformation from the traditional hand design and drafting method, through the 2D computer aided design (CAD), 3D modelling and a dynamic phase of an intelligent Building Information modelling (BIM). Amidst the rise of global competitiveness in the AEC industry, the utilisation of BIM based application within most architectural firms in Nigeria has increased rapidly. BIM has in its content an embodiment of complex problem solving capabilities, ranging from design, management and coordination of technical responsibilities in the AEC industry. Following the awareness and subsequent adoption of Building Information modelling in architectural practices. Students have succinctly awakened their awareness towards the relevance of BIM application in the future of work without a systematic curricular framework. The demand for BIM implementation within AEC industry has also impacted greatly on the need for integration of BIM in the AEC education. Specifically, architecture education is currently witnessing doldrums following the transformation of architectural practice workplace over the past four decades. It is glaring that in today's architectural work environments, the traditional drawing table which was a base instrument for hand drawing facilitation has gradually disappeared. Walking into an architectural firm today reveals that the workstation is computerized, where all design projects are computer based, aided by software that enhance productivity within the architecture studio preferences. Therefore the aim of this paper is to explore the benefits and obstacles of BIM deployment to meet the undergraduate architectural learning outcomes. A review of related literature was carried out to establish documented facts on BIM audience, uses and importance. This paper further provides a recommendation for how teachers can more effectively integrate BIM into architectural undergraduate programs assisting undergraduate students' development and provides a timely consideration of how BIM can be adopted in the architectural design curriculum.

DESIGN STUDENTS VIEWPOINT ON BIM: A PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF THE INDICATORS

ISPRS Archives, 2020

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been the most popular Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) technology and information management approach for the last 5 years. The popularity of the approach not only comes from its role in enabling an efficient exchange of information and collaboration between the stakeholders of a construction project, but also is related with the benefits it has provided in detecting possible errors in the design phase, and providing means for the elimination of these errors as early as possible and thus minimizing the time and financial loss in the project. The training related to BIM is provided in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, also with certification programs. The viewpoint of the students/trainees is closely related to their attitude towards BIM. The research explained in this paper aimed to identify the viewpoint of design school students on Building Information Modelling. The study started with a literature review on the foundational concepts regarding BIM. The second stage of the study included data collection with a questionnaire survey. Later this data is explored through descriptive statistics, and some foundational hypothesis on the impact of group differences on the BIM viewpoint were tested. The findings indicate that the viewpoint of design school students shows a positive tendency towards using and implementing BIM in real-life projects. Besides, the group differences (such as gender, level, department) do not appear to have an impact on the viewpoint.

INTEGRATION OF BIM IN HIGHER EDUCATION: CASE STUDY OF THE ADOPTION OF BIM INTO COVENTRY UNIVERSITY'S DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING

In the context of Architecture, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a design methodology which enables all of the design details, decisions and characteristics to be held within a collaborative digital representation and information package. The design and project information can then be shared, accessed and altered live, facilitating an efficient and fluid collaborative design and asset management process across the whole life cycle of a building. It is argued that BIM has many benefits for projects such as reducing waste, improving the efficiency and enhancing collaboration between different parties to a project which can lead to improved quality and also cost and time reductions. Government drive indicates that BIM skills and information sharing, protocols and processes are essential for improving efficiency of design and operational performance of buildings. It is therefore important that the principle of BIM is integrated into the training of future construction professionals. The aim of this paper is to outline the process that has been undertaken to integrate BIM within the undergraduate curriculum at Coventry University's Civil Engineering, Architecture and Building (CAB) department. A critical analysis of a case study construction engineering department has been carried out to inform the development of the strategy for integration of BIM within existing course structure. The case study offers a lesson on the adoption of BIM to enhance the student skills and understanding relevant to their professional disciplines.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the Impact on Design Quality

The integrated studios in which architecture students are paired with engineering and construction manager students works on the assumption that the common denominator-BIM-is a tool of equal meaning and value to all. This is not the case: each discipline has its own values, procedures, and protocols that bend BIM to its own needs. When these differences are not recognized, design, which has traditionally been the province of architecture, gets short shrift. The BIM process offers the opportunity for cross-disciplinary contamination without sacrificing design emphasis. How to blend engineering student input with architecture student design input so each group learns equally from the other and high quality design outcomes are empowered rather than diminished will be discussed.
