Qualitative and Quantitative Research: How to Choose the Best Design

It is often difficult to choose between quantitative and qualitative research design. At times, a researcher may choose a design because he or she is more familiar with one method or the other or a colleague recommends a particular design. However, our research will be more helpful if we make our decision based on well-considered, suitable design rather than simply choosing a design that is more familiar or comfortable to the researcher. The purpose of this paper is to introduce graduate students and new researchers to quantitative and qualitative research design and to help them choose the best method based on the type of information needed and analytical capability.

The purpose of this study is compared strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies in social science fields. Reviewed recent secondary resources, there is no best approach between both research methodologies due to existing strengths and weaknesses among both types of research methodologies. To plan and implement a research, choosing either one research methodology will still be occurred strengths and weaknesses for the research. This common study only based on existing secondary data and sources to interpret results. No primary data approach on this study due to sufficient source and data from secondary resources. The defined cases have proven that complementary approach between qualitative and quantitative approaches for a same research topic may provide expected results as both references better than just thoroughly considering either one research methodology approach.

This paper intends to compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research in brief. Based on library sources, the paper is prepared for the Bachelor and Master level research students plus interested one. The article initiated with the concept of research and its major purposes, and then associates the general information about qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research. Finally, it illustrates the relative and discrepancy between qualitative and quantitative research with a few concluding note.
STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS OF QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS
Scientific research adopts qualitative and quantitative methodologies in the modeling and analysis of numerous phenomena. The qualitative methodology intends to understand a complex reality and the meaning of actions in a given context. On the other hand, the quantitative methodology seeks to obtain accurate and reliable measurements that allow a statistical analysis. Both methodologies offer a set of methods, potentialities and limitations that must be explored and known by researchers. This paper concisely maps a total of seven qualitative methods and five quantitative methods. A comparative analysis of the most relevant and adopted methods is done to understand the main strengths and limitations of them. Additionally, the work developed intends to be a fundamental reference for the accomplishment of a research study, in which the researcher intends to adopt a qualitative or quantitative methodology. Through the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each method, it becomes possible to formulate a more accurate, informed and complete choice.

The objective of the qualitative and quantitative integration in research designs is the reconciliation between paradigms and methods in research in social science. The objective to specify the general epistemological formulations on which qualitative methods are based in more precise and current methodological proposals, since we are in an exciting moment in the qualitative research in which it is appreciated a clear tendency in the use of a mixed methods research. During the Twentieth-First Century that have favoured the rise of mixed methods researches that enhance the mutual invigoration of the two types of methods, and facilitate the triangulation through operations. The aim of this track is to provide a space for reflection and put into practice the foundation, operationalization, and fields of application of qualitative and mixed methods researches.

The design of qualitative research is a general way of thinking about conducting qualitative research. It describes, either explicitly or implicitly, the purpose of the qualitative research, the role of the researcher(s), the stages of research, and the method of data analysis. A qualitative research design is probably the most flexible of the various experimental techniques, encompassing a variety of accepted methods and structures. Here, four of the major qualitative research designs namely phenomenology, ethnography, grounded theory and case study are introduced. Descriptions of all four qualitative research designs are given separately. The design of qualitative research provides for the learner to understand the difference between phenomenology and grounded theory or between ethnography and case study and also provides the appropriate knowledge about itself.

If the research question involves exploring how people experience something, or what their views are, exploring a new area where issues are not yet understood or properly identified. A qualitative research design is probably the most flexible of the various experimental techniques, encompassing a variety of accepted methods and structures. Here, five of the major qualitative research designs namely ethnography, phenomenology, case study, grounded theory, and narrative research has introduced. Descriptionsof all five qualitative research designs are given separately. The design of qualitative research provides for the learner to understand the difference between phenomenology and grounded theory or between ethnography and case study and also narrative research and it gives the knowledge about itself. Common sense and research both involve an attempt to understand various aspects of the world. However research, but arguably not common sense, involves an explicit, systematic approach to finding things out, often through a process of testing out preconceptions and researchers working in the social sciences: psychology, sociology, anthropology etc., interested in studying human behaviour and the social world inhabited by human beings, found increasing difficulty in trying to explain human behaviour in quantifiable, measurable terms. Qualitative research attempts to broaden and/or deepen our understanding of how things came to be the way they are in our social world. If the research question involves exploring how people experience something, or what their views are, exploring a new area where issues are not yet understood or properly identified (e.g. before developing questionnaire items), assessing whether a new service is implementable, looking at "real-life" context, or a sensitive topic where you need the flexibility to avoid causing distress, your team probably needs to discuss using qualitative methodology.

There's no hard and fast rule for qualitative versus quantitative research, and it's often taken for granted. It is claimed here that the divide between qualitative and quantitative research is ambiguous, incoherent, and hence of little value, and that its widespread use could have negative implications. This conclusion is supported by a variety of arguments. Qualitative researchers, for example, have varying perspectives on fundamental problems (such as the use of quantification and causal analysis), which makes the difference as such shaky. In addition, many elements of qualitative and quantitative research overlap significantly, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. Practically in the case of field research, the Qualitative and quantitative approach can't be distinguished clearly as the study pointed. The distinction may limit innovation in the development of new research methodologies, as well as cause complication and wasteful activity. As a general rule, it may be desirable not to conceptualise research approaches at such abstract levels as are done in the context of qualitative or quantitative methodologies. Discussions of the benefits and drawbacks of various research methods, rather than general research questions, are recommended.
