The Predicting Factors of Success in the Indonesian National Nursing Competency Test

The implementation of the Indonesian National Nursing Competency Test faces several challenges, especially those associated with low passing rates. Low passing rates are a concern of all nursing schools because they reflect the quality of the institution. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors predicting success on the Indonesia National Nursing Competency Test. The research design was descriptive correlational. Participants in the study were 201 alumni of the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Pelita Harapan in Indonesia. Statistical tests showed a significant correlation between academic achievement (academic stage GPA, professional stage GPA, English proficiency score, and tryout) and the national competency test, while demographic data showed no significant correlation. Introduction: The Indonesian government mandated the national examination for health professional in 2014. Yogyakarta was the province with the highest percentage achievement for this past five years and it was affected by many factors. This study was conducted to analyze what are the factors that influence the success in national nursing examination of three year nursing students in Yogyakarta.Methods: This descriptive correlative design with sample of 926 graduate students of three years diploma in Yogyakarta and total sampling technique was used. The data were analyzed by frequency distribution, F-test, multiple regression and R2 for the determinant analysis unit. Results:The study identified that 78.1% of the participants were female with age of 20 to 24 years old, 68.2 % were come from Yogyakarta, 96,9% had academic grade with range of 3 to 3.99. Purpose: The readiness and strategies of management are important factors to gain higher passing grade on nursing national competency examination. This study analyzed the strategy and readiness of the managers to success try out and national competency examination and the readiness for administering Computer Based Test on national nursing competency examination in Indonesia.Methods: This descriptive correlative research with population of 437 three years diploma in nursing institutions used quota and accidental sampling technique with 123 participants. Background: Licensure examination is a tool to gauge the nursing competency level. Effort s are made to prepare nursing graduates effectively to improve their pass rate in this examination. Aim: To describe the components of an effective preparation programme that would enhance the pass rate in the Indonesian national nursing licensure examination (NNCE). Methodology: A content analysis method using interactive semistructured in-depth interviews to interview randomly selected course coordinators (n = 7), clinical instructors (n = 7), and nursing alumni (n = 6) of the faculty of nursing of a private university in Indonesia. Findings: The study extracted eight themes perceived by the participants to be the components of an effective preparation programme: (1) preparation programme is integrated into the curriculum, (2) improvement of competency process standard and evaluation, and (3) holistic approach to preparation, (4) active involvement and participation, (5) knowledge and skills specialty, (6) sharp examination-taking skills, (7) strong motivation and confidence, and (8) time commitment. Discussion: Preparation process is a significant determining factor in the success of the exam takers. The nursing faculty management and educators need to work together to provide a good preparation process. Conclusion: A proposed effective preparation programme is to be carried out by the educators with the support of the faculty of nursing, as a programme integrated into the academic and internship programmes, and as an intensive programme after the completion of the internship programme. It is recommended that the programme be implemented to evaluate its rigor in real situations.

After completing the Nursing Professional Education Program (NPEP), ideally all of the nursing students had mastered the nursing skills' competency. However, the reality of these conditions might be different. Many factors have been found which affect the achievement of the nursing skills' competency. This study aims to identify the inhibiting factors of nursing students' skills competencies during NPEP in the Faculty of Nursing USU. This is a descriptive study. Samples in this study were 25 students who had completed NPEP. Data were collected by interviewing process. Results of the study were presented in narrative method. The results showed that the biggest inhibitor in achieving competency was the non-nursing tasks assigned by the hospital's staff; other inhibitors were the nursing students' personal problems, the clinical preceptors, unit's equipment and other professions. The nursing students suggested that faculty of nursing should provide the hospital pre-clinic program before enrolling NPEP, so that they would have the better understanding about the real situations in the hospital and could minimize such inhibitors.

Background: The improvement of nursing student competency currently is still an issue for the majority of nursing education institutions in Indonesia. This is due to their partnership with hospitals having not been supported by adequate policies and other factors. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the appropriate model for improving student competency in a clinical study. The design used in this study was an observational study with cross-sectional approach. Methods: The research design used a cross-sectional approach involving five hospitals and five Universities. Three hundred and eighty-four participants were recruited from these sites. The data was analysed using multiple logistic regression. Results: The results showed that the partnership contributed 3.36 times, the patient variations 2.96 times, the job description of the clinical educator 2.30 times, a role model 2.28 times, and the expertise of the faculty educator 2.08 times towards the achievement of student competency in the clinical study. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the partnership aspect, patient variation, job description of the clinical educator, role model, the expertise of the faculty educator, and the level of education has a significant role to improve the achievements coming from the level of student competency in the clinical study. The results of this study can be used by nursing educational institutions, hospitals and the government to organise a nursing education model for the more optimal achievement of the student's competencies.

Background: Public knowledge regarding health services has been increasing significantly in the recent years and it has an effect on increasing community demands for quality health services. Therefore, health workers with good skills, intelligent, and communicative are needed. Good competence is also needed in carrying out their roles and functions according to the code of ethics The competencies of health worker graduates are different in every regions in Indonesia. The majority of health workers perceive that their current competencies are not in accordance with their expectations. To ensure that health workers produced by educational institutions have the same competence, all health worker graduates are required to take a competency test as a requirement for obtaining a registration certificate. Exit exam is a competency test that is conducted as a requirement for graduation. This study aims to provide an overview of the relationship between the knowledge, perceptions, motivation and expectations of nursing and midwifery students on the competency test as a graduation requirement. Methods: This is a mix-method study (A quantitative and qualitative methods were used). The quantitative method used was non-experimental, with a crosssectional approach, and qualitative methods to find out information about the perceptions, motivations and expectations of respondents about the implementation of the competency exam as a passing requirement. The number of samples in this study were 246 respondents, consisting of DIII midwifery, Nursing DIII and nurses (82 respondents for each colleges). Results: The results of the study based on the path analysis showed that education had no influence on knowledge, respondents' perceptions and expectations of the competency test, but had an influence on motivation (P = < 0.01). Knowledge does not affect on perception, motivation or expectation, while for perception variable affects on motivation (P = 0.026) and expectation (P= <0.01). Conclusion: Respondents' expectations will be directly influenced by motivation and perception.
Terminal Assessment of Core Nursing Knowledge in a State University
Assessment of educational outcomes upon completion of the nursing program is one way to inform academic institutions of the effectiveness of their teaching-learning practices. A descriptive correlational study design was carried out among 141 graduating nursing students of West Visayas State University to assess their terminal cognitive competency on core nursing knowledge framed under the National Nursing Competency Standards' 11 Key Areas of Responsibility. All regular graduating students in the year 2015 with complete records of secondary data needed for the study were included. A validated and reliability tested questionnaire was used to assess the terminal core nursing knowledge competencies of the students. Results revealed that students, prior to graduation, had good core nursing knowledge. Significant differences were found in the terminal core nursing knowledge of students when grouped according to Nursing Aptitude Test (NAT) and academic performance in professional nursing courses, with students who had excellent and superior NAT performance and those with very good and outstanding academic performance in professional nursing courses having significantly higher terminal core nursing knowledge. NAT and academic performance had significant, positive correlation to core nursing knowledge. Further, NAT and academic performance accounted for 46% of variance explained in the core nursing knowledge of nursing students. Higher Education Institutions, therefore, must commit themselves in providing quality nursing education by ensuring proper, responsive and relevant implementation of the nursing curriculum. This in turn may translate to attainment of intended educational outcomes and learners knowledgeable of the basic foundation of nursing practice.
