RURAL TOURISM IN ROMANIA -EVOLUTIONS AND DISCONTINUITIES

This paper analyzes the evolution of rural tourism since the early '70s, the time of onset, and indicates the discontinuity recorded especially after 1989 until the brink of the preparation for Romania's joining the European Union and the present state, one far behind the countries with extremely high degree of urbanization and industrialization, probably as a result of a lack of strategy for this form of tourism in which the beneficiary is the Ministry of Tourism, as the health tourism and ecotourism have recently had. The location of many villages in areas of outstanding natural landscapes, the richness and variety of cultural heritage that endows them, are issues related to an increased tourism potential that can be capitalized and those unique tourism products that can not be seen, admired and offered by other countries.

ANALYSIS OF ROMANIA’S AND TRANSYLVANIA’S TOURIST SUPPLY DEVELOPMENT AND PERFORMANCE

The paper’s premise is that a strong link exists between Romania’s poor tourism performance and the quality of its hospitality supply. In this respect, a comparative analysis of Romania’s and Transylvania’s tourist offering is carried out aiming at identifying the particularities of their development and the causes of their poor performance. The motivation for having chosen Transylvania resides in this region’s attractiveness among foreign tourists; it is a destination with a high potential favoring the development of some tourist products competitive on the international market. Thus, based on a comprehensive secondary data analysis regarding the public lodging facilities, the paper presents their geographic dispersion, the development of the accommodation capacity by levels of classification, the number of available beds, the types of units, the structures’ international affiliation, the main Romanian owners, etc. The dispersion by levels of classification, together with the net usage indexes of the accommodation capacity, characterize the performance of this industry. The research study emphasizes the fact that despite a high tourist potential, the present-day hospitality supply cannot support a healthy development of the tourist activity, and presents some possible causes.

An analysis of some recent statistics of the Romanian tourism

Jurnal of Tourism, no. 11 /2011, pp. 38-44, 2011

One studies the evolution in time of some indicators that are representative for the touristic activity in Romania during 2000 – 2009, as well as correlations between them, these being: the number of arrivals and of overnights in the tourism structures with accomodation functions, as well as the number of tourism structures and their accomodation capacity, separately for foreign and Romanian visitors, as well as for different tourism destinations. All these indicators were extracted from the database of the National Institute of Statistics. Generally, an increase in time of the number of tourists is found, but also a certain decrease during the last two-three years, except for some groups of destinations which show a rather peculiar and interesting dynamics. Thus, the tourism in the resorts of the seaside area have registered an accentuated decrease during the last four years, especially for the foreign tourists, that reflects a change in their options. On the other hand, the tourism for the category of destination ―other localities and touristic routes (which excludes the resorts of the spa, seaside, and mountain areas, as well as the city of Bucharest and all the county capital cities) has shown a remarkable growth during the whole considered time interval, indicating an increase of the interest of the tourists (both Romanians and foreigners) for the cultural and rural tourism.

Rural tourism as a strategic option for social and economic development in the rural area in Romania

Forum geografic, 2012

The rural tourism is considered a strategy that can contribute to the decreasing of population mobility, creating employment opportunities, and also to the social-economic development of the rural area. Rural tourism and agritourism can satisfy the need for open space through recreation activities, responding to the increasing interest of the urban population for the natural patrimony and rural culture. Rural tourism marks the economic growth stimulation, the underdeveloped areas viability, the life standards improvement for local population. If the rural tourism accomplishes all these functions, it requires a development through which the resources durability is secured during its expansion. The tourism sustainable development in the rural area demands the ability to develop the tourism resources, creating links between different activity sectors in a certain way that the space value is preserved.
