The objective of this paper is to identify the influencing factors of farmers' willingness for early adoption of enhanced irrigation technologies in Tunisia. We estimate a multinomial logit model with data from 931 farmers in Central (Chebika) and Northern (Fernana) of Tunisia. Regression results reveal that early adoption is positively influenced by levels of extension service quality, trust in farmers' associations and extension agents, farmer's perception towards the innovation, credit access, and off-farm income. However, it is negatively affected by market access issues, risk aversion, and age. Risk, trust, and perception towards technology are important factors in driving early adoption decision. The findings imply that farmers training on water conservation technologies, financial support for innovation adoption, awareness of young farmers about the opportunities of agricultural innovation, incentives to farmers' associations in order to improve their market access, and inclusive participatory approaches during technology generation and transfer are all accelerators of early adoption of innovations by farmers.
The Role of Farmer Personal Characteristics in the Adoption of Localized Irrigation Technology (LIT)
2021
In Morocco, one of the most important and effective ways to combat the water crisis is to increase irrigation efficiency through the use of water-efficient irrigation technologies. Among the existing irrigation technologies, LIT has the highest efficiency rate (up to 90-95% irrigation efficiency). However, the adoption of this technology is low and continues at a slow pace. The main objective of this study is to identify and understand the role of individual variables in the adoption of localized irrigation technology (LIT) by farmers in the Draa-Tafilalt region. The results of the analysis of data collected by questionnaire from 400 farmers in the Draa-Tafilalt region showed that the variables "Self-Efficacy", "Attitude" and "Education Level" had a positive and significant effect on the probability of LIT adoption at the 1% significance level. On the other hand, the variables "Age" and "Experience" had a negative and significant eff...

This study aims to identify and analyze the major determinants that affect the adoption choice, rate and intensity of water-saving irrigation technologies (sprinkler and drip irrigation techniques) available in the western part of the irrigated perimeter of Mitidja Plain, Algeria. A sample of 136 farmers (28.75%) was randomly selected and surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Three econometric models were used, namely the Logit, Tobit and Poisson regression models. The main findings of the resulted models indicated that capital constraints (credit access, investment costs and subsidies) along with some human capital aspects (age, educational level) and water extraction cost, are the main determinants expected to influence the WSIT adoption choice, rate and intensity in the study area. These results will help to prioritize the factors that affect adoption decisions and provide insights for improving the crop and water productivity.
Micro-Irrigation Technology Adoption in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon: A Behavioural Model
Sustainability
Potato crops are one of the main sources of income for farmers living in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. Given the high sensitivity of potatoes to water stress, water shortages can cause considerable losses in terms of potato yield and quality. To overcome this challenge, the use of water-saving technologies such as micro-irrigation systems are very important. However, the adoption of this technique remains quite low among potato farmers in the Bekaa region, who still use ordinary sprinkler systems. In this study, the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) serves as the conceptual framework for investigating these farmers’ behaviour in adopting a new micro-irrigation system. To achieve this objective, we extended the UTAUT model by considering farmers’ risk perception of the use of a new micro-irrigation technology. The moderators tested were age, previous experience, voluntariness of use, gross unit margin and educational level. Examining the standard regression co...
Factors affecting the adoption of new irrigation systems by Iranian farmers
Indian journal of scientific research, 2014
The main aim of this paper was to investigate factors affecting the adoption of new irrigation systems by farmers of Friedan County in Iran. This research was a applied research and in the terms of data collection was a survey research. The study population included all farmer owner in Friedan county (N=4000). Sample population was selected by use the Cochran formula (n=220). The main instrument used in this study was questionnaire. Validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by expert's viewpoint and doing the pretest. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed by examine the Alfa Cronbach that was equal 0.978 in all section and in the tendency of modern methods, economic tendency, farmers' awareness, social interaction and support needs of farmers was 0.835, 0.815, 0.819, 0.722 and 0.756 respectively. The results of research indicated five factors: economic, social, support, individual and environmental factors that explain 55% of variance of the use of presser irrigation systems by farmers.
Adoption of Agricultural Innovations: The Case of Drip Irrigation of Cotton in Isreal
1986
The adoption parameters of drip irrigation in cotton growing in the collective farms sector (kibbutzim) in Israel are estimated. The classical logistic function is perfectly retrieved. The estimated parameters are then explained by a variable that represents profitability, the change in yield. In spite of the small number of data points it again appears that profitability is the major explanatory variable for the adoption of a new technology. A hypothesis of dynamic ceiling is described and estimates are drawn.

Adoption of small scale irrigation technology had unprecedented advantage for smallholder farmer to reduce poverty. It increases use of available water sources to get higher income and improves the livelihood of farmers. Improvement of livelihood of smallholder farmers has ample contribution to the development of the country's economy. With high potential demand to these technologies, still there are number of problems in selection for agricultural production improvements. Therefore, our study with the objective of exploring factors affecting adoption of small scale irrigation technology (SSIT) and existing constraints in the study area had used qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Binary logistic regression model was applied to analyze direct survey of farmers SSIT adoption. Analysis result revealed that six factors were significantly and directionally affects the adoption of small-scale irrigation technology. Age and lack of credit institution are negatively significant whereas awareness, access to water, government promotion, and total income of household affects positively. Qualitative findings show that conflict between members of Farmers Irrigation Water Use Association (FIWUA), unavailability and lack of access to spare parts, topography of the district, irrigation technology technician, and lack of skill were among the constraining factors found to hinder small scale irrigation technology adoption and use. We found the fact that FIWUA act as facilitating medium in adoption and extension of small scale irrigation technology and the presence of association could be taken as opportunities available for small scale irrigation technology adoption enhancement. Overall, our findings revealed that small scale irrigation technologies are highly beneficial, and seen to have impact on the livelihood of farmers, so that the government and partner of the government working on rural livelihood improvement should have to take into account on improving farmers' awareness and education on SSIT adoption through training and promotion in most parts of Ethiopia.
Factors Affecting the Adoption of Water Harvesting Technologies: A Case Study of Jordanian Arid Area
Sustainable Agriculture Research, 2016
In this article, we investigate the determinants of farmers' decisions to adopt water harvesting technologies (WHT) in the arid agricultural area of Jordan. In particular, we investigate the effect of different socio-demographic, economic, and institutional factors on the adoption of WHT. For doing so, we empirically apply a binary logistic regression model on a micro-dataset (59 farmers) in Jordanian Badia. Empirical findings indicate that there is no significant relationship between age and the probability of adoption of WHT. However, our findings show significantly positive relationships at 10% level for farmer education and experience which implies that farmers with higher education and experience level are more likely to adopt WHT. In contrast, it was found that labor and institutional variables such as credit services do not significantly influence adoption of WHT. Results also reveal a significant relationship between land tenure and adoption implying higher adoption rates on communal land as opposed to privately owned land. Based on our empirical results, this research will assist decision makers to prioritize the factors influencing adoption of WHT and provide insights for targeted dissemination, adoption, and diffusion of WHT in the Jordanian arid areas.

The main objective of the study was to estimate the financial returns of Agricultural Water Management (AWM) Technologies using cost-benefit analysis, to characterize the value of production using frontier production function. and then explain the differences in the estimated value of production. as function of various inputs. We also identified the determinants _of adoption and successful use by using variants of twostage regression models. . Our findings• indicate that the financial retu,:ns of ponds and micro-dams, given current production and market conditions, are not promising. The application of A WM i. technologies under full irrigation and the. use of micro-irrigation technologies to lift, {: convey and apply water has a significant positive effect resulting in about 53.8% andi 36% yield increase, respectively. The marginal productivity of the inputs, such as land' area, seed and oxen used, res1,1lt in at least a two to three fold increase in value, while t/1at oilabour is significantly lower under the various water harvesting regimes, except ponds. The marginal values of purchased inputs,. fertilizers and herbicides/pesticides, are negative, regardless of the type of syste.m used. Furthermore, households growing high value annuals and perennials have significantly higher marginal productivities: Nevertheless, the marginal productivity of irrigated annuals is found to be superior to irrigated perennials. • Minimization of risk, access to credit. asset holding, mainly: oxen and ot11er livestock /Jo/dings, agro-ecology, the number of contacts with extension agents and regional clummies were significant in explaining the likelihood of adoption of ponds, while asset /Jo/ding mainly landholding, access to farmers' training centr~s (FTCs) ancl regional dummies were found to be •significant in explaining the adoption of shallow wells. The• level of education achieved by a member, agro-ecology, asset holding, mainly oxen• holding, the ratio of irrigated area allocated to irrigated anntials, access to credit seNice and markets, and water availability affect successful use of A WM technologies.
