Using the model of the solar cell for determining the maximum power point of photovoltaic systems
2007
This paper proposes a technique for accelerating the convergence to the maximum power point of photovoltaic (PV) systems based on the model obtained from manufacturer's generator data. The influence of the temperature over the PV array performance is considered, and no measurement of solar radiation is required. No knowledge of the load model and no expensive sensor circuitry are necessary. The tracking speed is much faster than non model-based techniques at the expenses of an increase in the computational complexity. Simulation and experimental results are presented and demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution.
New Accurate Model to Estimate Maximum Power of Photovoltaic Modules and Arrays
Quantitative information regarding the maximum power point (MPP) of photovoltaic (PV) arrays is crucial for determining and controlling their operation. Accurate knowledge of the MPP for PV arrays is essential for the design and operation of grid-connected PV power systems under varied atmospheric conditions. The usual methods for tracking the MPP of PV arrays suffer from a serious problem that the MPP cannot be quickly acquired. Therefore, a simple and effective mathematical model to obtain the MP output in real time under all possible system conditions is indispensable to the development of a feasible PV generation system. We developed a new prediction model for directly estimating MPP for power tracking in PV arrays. The proposed model is a simple approach that takes the effect of solar cell resistances into consideration. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated at various temperatures and irradiation intensities.

This work proposes a new analytical model to extract the 1-Diode/2-Resistor solar cell/panel equivalent circuit parameters. The methodology is based on a reduced amount of experimentally measured information: short-circuit current, the slope of the I-V curve at that point, the open-circuit voltage, and the current and voltage levels, together with the slope of the I-V curve at the instantaneous operation point. This procedure is specially designed to analyze the performance of autonomous photovoltaic systems, which are most of the primary sources for spacecraft power. Results show good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, this methodology allows for fast and accurate I-V curve maximum power point (MPP) identification.
Photovoltaic (PV) Cell Modelling for PV system Optimization
Hisham Alsuti, 2019
Due to the increase of global power demand and consumption, decrease of gas and oil production from conventional reservoirs which have resulted in higher cost of power source, and as well due to environment protection and governments commitments to protect earth and environment, the green energy started to take more and more market share. Different technologies are available in the world that does provide green and environment safe energy. The most famous green energy are: Wind energy, hydropower and solar energy. The Solar power energy is used globally which by 2050, solar photovoltaics and concentrated solar power would contribute about 16 and 11 percent, respectively, of the worldwide electricity consumption, and solar would be the world's largest source of electricity. The challenges that solar energy face is high cost and environment condition, as solar power is impacted by dust, temperature, shading and irradiation. This project will focus on improving the efficiency and the performance of PV cell in terms of temperature variance and irradiations. the proposed module will be about optimization photovoltaic system (PV) in term of consideration of two famous modules called single diode module and double diode module. Where the proposed module has been developed by editing numerical equation of double diode. by consider the performance and the efficiency level under test condition environment, this consideration is done by designed equivalent circuit of both modules in MATLAB R2017b where designed seven code m.files to get the best module closer to experimental data where it depend on simulate the cell behavior when effected by various temperature and by various irradiance level. The main objective is to find the parameters of the nonlinear I–V equation by adjusting the curve at three points: open circuit, maximum power, and short circuit. Given these three points, which are provided by all commercial array datasheets, the method finds the best I–V equation for the proposed module including the effect of the series and parallel resistances, and warranties that the maximum power of proposed module closer to maximum power of the real array.

Abstract-the paper proposes a possible solution to absorb and utilize all the solar radiation spectrum including ultraviolet and infrared along with the visible radiation. A typical solar PV cell usually absorb only the visible solar radiation to covert to electricity which is 46% of the total solar radiation but it can't use the other non-visible spectrum like infrared (longer wavelength) and ultraviolet (shorter wavelength) which consists of the other 54% of solar energy. This non-visible solar radiation is either absorbed by the earth surface and atmosphere or reflected back to the space and it is wasted as far as the solar cell absorption is concerned. There are lots of researches going on in the semiconductor level to design a solar cell which can absorb the solar radiation in non-visible region using band-gap engineering but if we could somehow convert the non-visible solar radiation into visible range before it comes to the solar cell (semiconductor level) then the overall efficiency of a solar PV system would surely be increased to a satisfactory amount. After converting the non-visible spectrum into visible spectrum, we will then incident this radiation on a typical solar PV cell. In this paper the possible arrangement for such conversion is proposed which is still at a preliminary stage concept and yet to be implemented.
Characterizing the Photovoltaic Solar Panel for Maximum Power Output
2018
A study has been conducted on fixed photovoltaic solar panel towards achieving maximum power output. The power output of PV solar panels is examined with different tilt angle (5°, 20°) and oriented towards the north, south, east and west during the month of February and March 2017 in Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria (Latitude = 4.78°N). The open voltage and short circuit current generated with the corresponding ambient temperature was recorded on a daily basis from 09:00-16:00 hrs GMT+1 West Africa over the entire measurement period. Horizontal global radiation data recorded from a Nigerian Environmental Climate Observatory Project (NECOP) station at the University was used to calculate the tilted global irradiation on the PV panel. The results showed that for fixed PV panel the maximum power output is when equal to the latitude of the location. It was found that tilting the Photovoltaic panel to equal the latitude of the location will lead to an average power yield o...
Efficiency Maximization of Solar Photovoltaic Systems
Ijca Proceedings on National Conference on Advances in Technology and Applied Sciences, 2014
Photovoltaic (PV) power generation has an important role to play due to the fact that it is a green source. The only emissions associated with PV power generation are those from the production of its components. Increasing the efficiency in PV plants so the power generated increases is a key aspect, as it will increase the incomes, reducing consequently the cost of the power generated so it will approach the cost of the power produced from other sources. The efficiency of a PV plant is affected mainly by three factors. The paper discusses the factors affecting the overall efficiency of a solar PV system.
Estimating the maximum power of a photovoltaic array
A user of photovoltaic (PV) technology is always interested in the performance of the system. Proper performance of a module or an array implies the need to determine the power produced and compare it with that expected given the actual operating conditions. In order to measure the maximum power of a PV system special hardware is required. Usually, an I-V tracer capable of measuring a single module or an array of modules is required. Depending on the setup one may reduce the data to Standard Test Conditions (STC) or just acquire measurements to determine the maximum power. In the former case, research grade procedures are necessary, while in the latter I-V traces along with cell temperature and solar data are sufficient. Here we present preliminary results of a relatively simple way to estimate the expected maximum power based on measurements of the short circuit current, the open circuit voltage and the module temperature. The fill factor is calculated through a linear expression w...
Maximum power output performance modeling of solar photovoltaic modules
Energy Reports, 2019
The aim of this work is to present the results of maximum power performance measurements of PV modules of the first grid-connected PV system installed at Centre de Développement des Energies Renouvelables (CDER), working since June 2004. The analysis has shown that all the PV modules are producing power, but less than rated value. In our case, two mathematical models have been used in order to determine the maximum power output (Pmax) delivered by the PV module as function of the solar irradiance intensity and the PV-module temperature. Comparison have been made for the two models. Note that PVWATTS model is simpler than the analytical five-parameter model. c
A contribution to the simulation and design optimization of photovoltaic systems
IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 1991
This paper presents guidelines to the proper selection of solar array and battery sizes for use in PV-powered dispersed systems, located far from public power networks. It will also deal with the choice of the key design parameters of separately excited DC motors used for farm irrigation. The selection procedure is based on the accurate system modelling and the annual simulation using actual meteorological (insolation and temperature) and typical load data pertinent to the state of Kuwait. The procedure determines the useful, dumped and commercial energy components, forced upon by system-load interaction. Two systems are investigated, system (1) is an alternating current (AC) residential load of a given annual demand profile on hourly basis, while system (2) represents an imgation setup featuring a DC motor and a battery backup. The results showed that a properly-sized battery interface would enhance the performance of the irrigation system, energywise, by more than 12% compared to the directly coupled case. As for the AC load, there exist optimum battery and PV sizes, where the effective energy is maximum.
