This paper aims to find out the significant firm-specific and macroeconomic determinants of operating efficiency through covering 360 observations having 30 commercial banks’ data from 2009 to 2020. Model specification test along with several diagnostic tests has been done and our investigation reveals that Net interest margin or net investment income ratio, loan loss provision to total loan, debt to total assets and total loan to earning assets are significantly related with operating efficiency ratio (OER) bringing the changes in operating efficiency. In the second model, return on equity, net interest margin or net investment income ratio, equity capital to total assets, loan loss provision to total loan, bank size, total loan to earning assets and total loan to total deposit significantly affect the operating efficiency of commercial banks being measured with cost efficiency ratio (CER). In the subsequent model, net interest margin or net investment income ratio, total loan to e...

Liquidity is a critical phenomenon for maintaining both profitability and maximum utilization of resources including both human and non-human, by investing more and retaining less money deposited. But if there is an uncontrolled mismatch between assets and liabilities due to inefficient management of liquidity, a bank may not survive and face tremendous difficulties in managing its operations. This study attempts to measure the efficiency of liquidity management for profitability and asset utilization in the banking sector of Bangladesh. 10 private commercial banks were selected using convenience sampling. Data was collected on Cash and Cash Equivalent, Return on Assets, Total operating income, Earnings per share, Net asset value, No. of Branches and No. of employee. The time frame of the study was from 2010 to 2014. Findings showed that Total operating income and number of employees as a representative of profitability and asset efficiency respectively, influence cash and cash equi...
Predicting the Efficiency of Commercial Banks in Bangladesh
2021
This paper examines the efficiency of the thirty-six commercial banks (27 Domestic and 9 Foreign Banks) by reviewing Literature and analyzing 6 years (2011-2016) data. The sample was selected based on the availability of data. It is assumed that the banking sector complies with the variable returns to scale (VRS) approach which means the output of a bank is not proportionately related to its inputs. Therefore, VRS in the ‘Data Envelop Analysis (DEA)’ technique has been employed in this paper. The findings reveal that most (30 banks out of 36 banks) of the banks of Bangladesh are inefficient in terms of technical, allocative, and scale efficiency during the 2011-2016 periods. Conversely, only six banks (4 domestic banks and 2 foreign banks) were found efficient in overall scores in this scrutinization. Assessing the Relationship between Efficiency, Capital and Risk of Commercial Banks in Bangladesh
International Journal of Business and Management, 2018
Increased competition and problem loan in the banking sectors force banks to operate its activities more efficiently. However, bank’s efficiency, capital and risk are interrelated. The present study is made on assessing the inter-temporal relationship between efficiency, capital and risk of commercial banks in Bangladesh during the period 2011-2016 by setting simultaneous equation. The study uses three-stage least square model (3SLS) and dynamic panel generalized method of moments (GMM) model to estimate efficiency-capital-risk relationship. The study reports that both models provide consistent result regarding the relationship of bank’s operational efficiency with capital and risk and inconsistent result about the relationship between capital and risk. The study concludes that a U-shaped relationship is exited in the 3SLS model of efficiency-capital-risk relationship as banks’ operational efficiency and risk have positive relationship with capital and bank size, i...

The objective of this paper is to identify the bank specific variables that affect the profitability of commercial banks of Bangladesh. A total of 15 commercial banks were taken & their financial reports were analyze from 2003-2013. The study used return on asset as the dependent variable & bank specific variables like capital adequacy ratio, gearing ratio (risk), liquidity, non-performing loan ratio, operating expense ratio & bank size as independent variables. Prais-Winsten correlated panels corrected standard errors (PCSEs) model was employed which removes any autocorrelation & heteroskedasticity problem automatically for the panel data. The results indicated that size, operating expense, gearing ratio & capital were found to be important variables that affect the bank profitability of Bangladesh. Other two variables were not important determinants for Bangladeshi commercial banks. Capital shows positive relation to bank profitability but other three statistically significant variables showed negative relation to performance. Empirical results suggests that adequate capital, low risk, efficient expense management & rightsizing lead to greater performance and profitability for Bangladeshi bank industry.
Determinants of Commercial Banks’ Efficiency in Bangladesh: Does Crisis Matter?
The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Business, 2017
Banks play a crucial role in bringing stability and economic development through their expected contribution in proper financial resource mobilisation across the economy. Despite the importance, there is little focus in recent literature which provided the empirical evidence how the global financial crisis affect the bank efficiency in Bangladesh. Thus, this paper aims to examine the effect of the global financial crisis and other factors on the efficiency of Bangladesh commercial banks. By employing the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method, we computed the technical efficiency of individual banks operating in the Bangladesh banking sector during 2000 to 2013. The empirical findings indicate that the Bangladesh banking sector has exhibited the highest efficiency level during 2001, while efficiency seems to be at the lowest level during 2010. The study finds that crisis along with bank size, capital adequacy ratio, return on average equity and real interest rate have a significant effect on bank efficiency in Bangladesh. In order to keep the sound financial development of Bangladesh, banks operating in the Bangladesh banking sector have to consider all the potential technologies which could improve their profit efficiency levels, since the main motive of banks is to maximise shareholders' value or wealth through profit maximisation.
The Relationship between Liquidity and Profitability of Listed Banks of Bangladesh
The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of liquidity on firm’s profitability. All the listed banks of DSE are selected for this purpose. Here we have find out the effect of independent variable (Temporary Investment Ratio) and control variable (Firm Size) over the dependent variables (ROA). For this study we have used panel data which includes 30 banks’ 5 year analysis. Trends of the ratios and element were examined. A model have been used to make the regression analysis. Here, secondary data have been used which were collected from the annual reports and calculated for 5 year period (2012-2016). We have found that there is a significant positive association between the performance of firms’ profitability and the liquidity of the sampled firms in Bangladesh. That means liquidity is relevant to profitability.
Determinants of Bank Cost Efficiency: Empirical Evidence from Bangladesh
2020
Due to the trust of depositors, banks should be responsible for efficient utilization of resources to achieve cost efficiency (CE) which in turn contributes to raising income. Previous studies found that the average CE of banks in Bangladesh was around 80%. This study aims to find the determinants of CE in Bangladesh from a sample of 33 banks during a period from 2009 to 2016. Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA) was used to measure CE in the first stage. In the second stage, different types of regression estimations were used like pooled ordinary least square, fixed effect or random effect panel regression, System-Dynamic Panel Data Estimation and Arellano-Bond Dynamic Panel Data Estimation for comparison. The results showed that Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) specifically the ArellanoBond Dynamic Panel Data Estimation was best suited for problems of The International Journal of Banking and Finance, Vol. 15. Influence of Liquidity on Profitability of Commercial Bank’s in Bangladesh
2020
This paper aims to drill down the impact of liquidity on commercial bank’s profitability in the banking sector of Bangladesh. To attain a sound outcome this paper used a sample of 10 commercial banks that are enlisted in Dhaka Stock Exchange. The duration of collecting data was from 2012 to 2019. For attaining the objective properly the paper used four measures of liquidity such as loan to deposit ratio, deposits to assets ratio, loan to asset ratio, and cash deposit ratio. Return on equity (ROE) and return on asset (ROA) is another measure to analyze the impact on profitability. The outcome of this paper states that the impact of liquidity on commercial bank’s profitability in Bangladesh is not statistically significant. Keywords: Profitability, ROE, ROA, Liquidity, loan to deposit ratio, deposits to assets ratio, loan to asset ratio, and cash deposit ratio. This paper aims at investigating the relationship between profitability and liquidity of the State-Owned Commercial Banks of Bangladesh. An important motive of this study is to provide valuable insights into how liquidity influences profitability. There are various research papers on liquidity exposure and the profitability relationship of banks in Bangladesh. But those researches are separately conducted for conventional or Islamic banks or there is a comparative analysis of both banks. But there is little research on the state-owned banking industry. During the Pandemic the banking industry of Bangladesh was affected severely in respect of liquidity risk and it also affected its profitability. There is no recent paper focused on this study. So, this study will try to identify the significant factors that affect the liquidity of a bank and its profitability. In this regard, 10 years' data from Annual Report of the State-Owned Commercial Banks and macroeconomic data from Bangladesh Bank website and several journals have been collected from 2012 to 2021. This study primarily aims at exploring the liquidity-profitability relationship using econometric model. Loan to Deposit ratio is used measuring liquidity of a bank. Other control variables Loan Loss Provision to Total Asset (LLPTA) for credit risk, Equity to Total Asset (EQTA) for capital efficiency, Operational expense to Total Asset (OPEXTA) for operational efficiency, Total Asset (TA) for Bank size, Non-performing Loan (NPL) for asset quality, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for economy size, Inflation (INF) for consumer price index, Interest Rate (INT) for opportunity cost, and the Unemployment rate for measuring labor force. The major finding of this study show that there is a significant positive relationship between liquidity risk and profitability. Among bank-specific variables credit risk, capital efficiency, and bank size have a significant relationship with Profitability which also supports the theory. Macroeconomic variables like interest rate, inflation rate, and GDP have a significant relationship with profitability which also supports the theory. Here BDBL and BASIC should have maintained the liquidity standard mentioned by Bangladesh Bank and BIS to mitigate their liquidity crisis. This study also shows that there is no severe effect of the COVID pandemic on the State-Owned Commercial Banks of Bangladesh. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights for banks and regulators to make informed decisions regarding risk management, liquidity decision, capital allocation, and strategic planning.
