QUALITY MANAGEMENT: A FUNDAMENTAL ISSUE IN THE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
This paper was designed to study fundamental issues that affect or impact on how quality management are implemented in Nigeria university context. It is a review of eight major papers focused on quality improvement of Nigerian universities. The research used a desk research methodology to critique areas hitherto overlooked by other researchers in the plan to improve quality services and management. The paper reveals that the challenge of management quality in Nigeria transcends the issue of finance or federal government allocation of resources. The paper presupposes that the issue of poor funding is critical to the development of quality service. However, it is not the exclusive responsibility of the federal government to finance the sector. Other stakeholders, such as state and local governments, as well as other private businesses, have responsibilities they must discharge.
University Quality Management Process A Review Of Nigerian University Principal Officers
The paper was design to investigate how the quality management process takes place in Nigerian universities. A standard literature review approach was used to identify gaps in past literature. The study collected information from 18 university principal officers who have an extensive role in university quality management. The paper used a qualitative approach to investigate principal officers’ knowledge of the quality management process in their universities in order to expand our knowledge about how quality management is carried out. The findings reveal that the quality of Nigerian universities is managed through a committee system set up in a way that allows everyone involved to contribute to the operation of the system independently.
Problems Hindering Quality Provision in Nigerian Universities: A Review of Academic Officers
Every organized or established institution will want to provide quality services irrespective of who owns the organization, especially in the case of a university where the primary aim is to provide quality graduates of sound character, to transform the organization as well as be productive and creative in making a living for themselves. In light of this broad agenda many institutions have been established all over the world, and Nigeria in particular has been committed to quality improvement. Universities are multifaceted units that impart knowledge and produce quality graduates, but the process of transforming students into quality graduates is a huge task, and universities have not been exempt from the many challenges. This paper is designed to look into problems hindering the provision of quality services from an academic officer's perspective. The paper uses a standard literature review technique to discuss quality. A qualitative approach was adopted with the use of interviews as the main research instrument. Thematic analysis was used for the discussion of the findings. The findings reveal that 4 major challenges hinder quality provision in the country.
This paper was designed to capture the views of students on what they understand by quality in universities, as the definition of quality is centred on customer satisfaction. This study aims to define what quality is in Nigerian universities from the stakeholders‟, or students‟ points of view, through the use of various literature, so as to understand what students perceive as quality and to address their major expectations. The paper argues that, if students are not classified or recognised as customers in the Nigerian university context, then the students need to explain how they define quality for the research to know how they perceive quality. The study sampled the opinions of students at both private and public institution using a questionnaire. The study has revealed that quality means different things to different people and that the ways in which individuals view quality in terms of private and public education are different. The study concluded that, in the Nigerian University System, quality management is paramount in achieving and producing quality students who can perform outstandingly in today‟s competitive corporate environment.
This article aims to identify key actors responsible for the implementation of government policies on university education in relation to quality management implementation. In order to do so, the study uses a critical realist approach to unveil the reality about who are involved and who takes responsibility for the process. The paper draws on the literature of educational conditions in the Nigerian university context and uses ethnographic methodology to carry out the research. The article uses this approach to investigate principal officers that is, those involved in the events that take place within the Nigerian university context. Six universities were connected with the study, within which twenty-nine principal officers took part. This paper revealed that principal officers, among other key actors, play a vital role in the transformation process; therefore, they must take more responsibility if quality is to be sustained.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT MECHANISMS: A REVIEW OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY PRINCIPAL OFFICERS
This paper aims to uncover quality management mechanisms that are considered necessary for the implementation of quality management in the context of Nigerian universities. A standard literature review was used to review the relevant literature on quality, quality management and Nigerian universities. The literature suggested a number of techniques and approaches or tools that are features of quality management but missing are important mechanisms that need to be in place to properly implement quality management in universities. Fifteen participants were involved across five universities. A purposive sampling method was used to select these five universities. The findings revealed three common major mechanisms that, while not identified as important factors in implementing quality management in other countries, are suggested by participants to be key in the Nigerian context.
Quality issues: Beyond the Nigerian institution
The article aims to take a step back to look at the issue of quality in Nigerian universities and identify those factors that have adverse effects on the process of establishing quality in universities but that cannot be controlled by the institutions’ principal officers. This paper reviewed the relevant literature using a standard literature review and found the opinions of 36 principal officers in six Nigerian universities regarding issues that affect quality but that are beyond the institutions’ control. The findings suggest that finance is not the only issue of this type. It was observed that external issues play vital roles in the administration and delivery of university services. The study concluded by discussing issues that would not be considered in other countries as matters for concern but that have an impact beyond what principal officers can control in the Nigerian context.
QUALITY AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES IN SOUTH WEST NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
Abstract The pivotal role of academic staff in the teaching learning process makes their perception on quality assurance functions significant. The study examined the awareness of academic staff in South West Nigerian on quality assurance measures as well as constraints to these measures. Descriptive research of the survey type was used with a study sample of 600 academic staff selected from four universities in the southwest geopolitical zone. Multi-stage, stratified, purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the sample and the universities. The universities were stratified along the variable of ownership (that is, Federal and State universities). An instrument tagged Quality Assurance Questionnaire (QAQ) was used to collect data from the subjects. The reliability coefficient of QAQ was 0.86 and the data collected were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The result of the study indicated that academic staff in these universities were aware of quality assurance measures. The study also revealed that ownership did not significantly influence constraints to quality assurance measures in these universities. Based on the findings of this study, the awareness level of academic staff should be sustained while adequate provision of resources was suggested for these universities irrespective of ownership
An Assessment of Total Quality Management in Nigerian Private Universities

This paper assessed total quality management (TQM) in Nigerian private universities. The specific objectives of the study evaluated total quality management practices implemented in Nigerian private universities; ascertained the quality problems in Nigerian private universities and investigated the degree of conformity of private universities in Nigeria to NUC predetermined quality standards. The study adopted a cross-sectional quantitative research design, which was based on a positivist research philosophy. The population for this study consisted of staff of The Department of Student and Academic Administration of the seventy-nine (79) private universities' in Nigeria. About the sample size, a sample of five hundred staff of The Department of Student and Academic Administration of the private universities (500) were chosen as the sample for the conduct of this study. Structured questionnaires adapted from existing TQM scales was used to collect primary data from the study respondents. Descriptive, reliability, and factor analysis was carried out on the collected data. Study findings revealed the quality management practices in Nigeria private universities to revolve around customer focus and satisfaction, quality leadership, quality information and analysis, Human resource development, strategic planning management, internal quality results, top management commitment, and process management. Study findings through factor analysis also revealed the nature of quality problems experienced by Nigerian private universities to revolve around improvement problem, administrative issues, structural problems, process design problems, unstructured performance problems, efficiency problems, and conformance problems. The study concludes from its investigation of the quality conformance of Nigerian private universities to predetermine standards that conformance to objectives of the university programs is essential in the measurement of TQM in Nigerian private universities, conformance to curriculum, teaching staff and quality ratio, student admission requirements, graduation requirements and conformance to standard of degree examination are important areas that Nigerian private universities have to pay attention to as evidenced from the study findings.
Higher Education Quality Management: Evidence from Adrar University

The quality of education seems to be one the biggest challenges that face the educational institutions, in particular the University ones. This issue prompted many of them to adopt total quality management concepts in order to raise the level of teaching and learning and a focus on the quality of its output efficiency. Therefore, this study aims to examine the reality of the comprehensive quality management at the University of Adrar. The opinions of professors and students of Adrar University had been analyzed, and in light of that study, we conclude that there is no comprehensive quality at the level of this university. Contribution/ Originality: The study sheds light on the reality of Total Quality Management in higher education institutions by taking the University of Adrar as an example. It is by this sense, one of the few studies that tackled the issue at an Algerian higher education institution. Therefore, it enriches the existed literature in this domain especially in Algeria on one hand, and paves the way for further investigations on the other.
