CHANGING ROLE OF WOMEN IN SOMALIA: AN EMPIRICAL SURVEY OF SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OF SOMALI WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN BANAADIR REGION

Women business owners are an important and growing force in the local economy, both in terms of the number of participants and the gross revenues and employment they represent. Somali Women owned businesses are highly increasing in the economies of almost all regions in the country. The hidden entrepreneurial potentials of women have gradually been changing with the growing sensitivity to the role and economic status in the society. In this study, the researcher studied socio-economic contribution of women entrepreneurs in Banaadir region at three section Business, Jewelers sellers, Cloth sellers and Gasoline sellers in Bakaara market, Mogadishu, Somalia with the three major objectives to investigate the socio economic condition of women entrepreneurs, to explore the conditions of women entrepreneurs in family including their economic activities and to identify to some extent women entrepreneurs has a role position in the family Using purposive sampling, the researchers selected 110 entrepreneurs. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency; the researchers revealed that the women entrepreneurs contributed economic and social and changed their role towards the family and the community in Banaadir region, The study which was to identify to some extent women entrepreneurs has a role position in the family is identified that women entrepreneurs has great position in their family decisions according to the analysis of the research and The study explained to explore the conditions of women entrepreneurs in family including their economic activities is showed a positive economic contribution in their family, means they have made improvements towards economic growth of their family.

Motivational Factors and Performance of Women Entrepreneurs in Somalia

This paper examines the impact of motivational factors on performance of women entrepreneurs, the objectives of this study is to examines the motivational factors of women entrepreneurs in Banadir region and to analyze the performance of women entrepreneurs. As sample of 125 women entrepreneurs involved small and medium enterprises, This study found that self recognition and economic necessities are the major factors that motivate Women entrepreneurs also this study revealed that the performance of Somali women owned business are somewhat low due to women perform their business in terms of independence and social recognition compared to men. The findings also showed that there is moderate correlation among motivational factors and performance of Women entrepreneurs in Banadir Region but the relationship is not high because of women are not motivated in terms financial performance.

CHALLENGES AND CONSTRAINTS FACED BY SOMALI WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN BENADIR REGION

Somali women play exceptional significant role in the economic and social development of Somalia after the central government collapsed in 1990. They are entering in business activities at all levels, making important contributions to economic growth. Nowadays, Somali women are increasingly active in parts of the economy that were previously considered male domain. Women entrepreneurs also create jobs. In the patriarchal society of Somalia, Women have worked as part of family labor for centuries. They have even actively helped their men folk in making business decisions when necessary. In dire circumstances they have even taken charge of family as bread winners and heads of families. However, womanhood as a concept does not include all these. Women as rule are not socialized as independent economic decision makers which is the core of the entrepreneurial spirit. the purpose of this paper is to explore women entrepreneurship, and more plainly, the challenges that Somali Female entrepreneurs face in the specific context of Mogadishu city.The main objective of this study was to examine challenges or constraints that are facing women entrepreneurs in Mogadishu-Somalia. A list of 131 participants was participated in this study. The study was conducted though survey and it used questionnaire. It identified many challenges that women entrepreneurs are facing such as financial problem, violence against women, lack of sufficient knowledge and family problem. It recommended that, the government should play its rules toward violence against women and there should be institutions who are advocating rights of women.

Challenges and Motivations of Women Entrepreneurs in Somali Region of Ethiopia

It was only after 1980's that great influx in to women entrepreneurship was witnessed. However, challenges faced by women entrepreneurs involves among, others, financial, human capital, network, cultural/normative challenges and government regulations. Yet nowadays women are more and more starting businesses and acting entrepreneurial for many reasons. These could be either of push (necessity) factors and/or pull (opportunity) factors. The paper examines challenges and motivations of 180 women entrepreneurs in Somali Region of Ethiopia who were purposively selected for the study. Administered face-to-face survey was conducted with 160 women entrepreneurs. The result of the paper shows that women entrepreneurs need demand creation in the area of microfinance loan applications. Women entrepreneurs start their businesses with their own personal savings and loans from family and friends, which is constraint to continuation of their businesses. Cultural challenges were not found to be barrier to women entrepreneurs in this paper, but the network challenges and government regulations were found to be challenges to women entrepreneurs. The paper also found that women entrepreneurs are motivated by the desire to generate income and become independent.

Developing Women Entrepreneurship – A challenge

The major challenge most of the developing countries and specially India is facing now is  Job less economic growth  Problem of maximum utilization of productive human resources, which is not possible if women are not provided with right opportunity to build up her status in the society.

With the emergence and growth of their businesses, they have contributed to the Indian economy & society. These women entrepreneurs have entered many industries and sectors. Many of the earlier obstacles to their success have removed, yet some remain. Further, there has been much progress in the training and development of women entrepreneurs within public policy and academic programs. This paper examines issues like why do women undertake entrepreneurship in India? What factors influence the strategic growth of women-owned businesses in India? What are the characteristics of Indian women entrepreneurs and their businesses? What have been the greatest obstacles and challenges for women entrepreneurs in India? The last part of paper gives some suggestions and conclusion for entrepreneurship development in India.

Women Entrepreneurship from a Global Perspective

ABSTRACT The number of women entrepreneurs is increasing all over the world but the rate of increase is not the same for all the countries. In some of the developed countries women entrepreneurship is growing at a very low rate on the other hand in some developing countries entrepreneurship amongst women is growing at a very fast rate. It is postulated that the disparity in growth of women entrepreneurs in various countries is due to the diversity in the perception of the social and economic milieu prevailing in the society. This paper attempts to explore the characteristics, motivation and challenges faced by the women Entrepreneurs. The paper also explores the factors that differentiate women entrepreneurs in developed countries from women entrepreneurs in developing countries.

FACTORS INFLUENCING PERFORMANCE OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN KENYA: A CASE OF BUNGOMA SOUTH

For a country to achieve its development goals, women must be incorporated in the entrepreneurship activities. A lot of literature supports the role of women in economy building. This study sought to determine factors influencing the performance of women entrepreneurs in Bungoma south. The study was guided by the following objectives: To investigate the influence of levels of education on performance of women entrepreneurs; to determine the influence of property ownership on performance of women entrepreneurs; to investigate the influence of competition from well established enterprises on performance of women entrepreneurs and to assess the influence of domestic commitments on the performance of women entrepreneurs. A conceptual framework to show the relationship between the dependent variables and independent variables including all indicators was used in the study. A pilot study was conducted in the Kabula region which was not involved in the final study to avoid contaminating the final actual sample. The target population for this research included all the 12300 women entrepreneurs in Bungoma town, Bukembe, Kibabii and Mayanja, with a sample size of 370 determined from Krejcie and Morgan table and randomly selected. A descriptive Research design was used to allow researcher to gather information, summarize, present and interpret data for the purpose of clarification. Stratified random sampling was used where each location formed strata. Proportional allocation was used to compute the exact number of subjects in each location which was a correct representation from the strata. The received data was classified, summarized, coded, sorted and SPSS and excel softwares used in analysis. From this study, it was observed that although there is the possibility of women entrepreneurs operating business enterprises in the same capacity and magnitude as men, traditional roles and practices such as domestic commitments, low levels of education, lack of property ownership and lack of opportunity driven motive to start enterprises continues to influence the performance of women entrepreneurs negatively in terms of monthly income sales, profit margin and types of business enterprise.
