The Construction of Stations and Tunnels by Slurry Trecnch, Method in the Madrid Metro Extension

Recently a new Extension of the Madrid Subway (Spain) is carried out (1995-2003). In 8 years more of 105 Km of tunnels are builded by several procedures: Traditional non-mechanized excavation, precast linings by E.P.B machines, cut and cover system, etc. In this paper the basic criteria adopted for the design of tunnels and stations built with the cut and cover method (reinforced concrete continuous and discontinuous walls) are analysed. Initially, to this purpose the geotechnical properties of the Madrid ground are reached, in order to establish a group of unified desion geotechnical parameters. The hypotheses made for the numerical analysis of in situ walls are shown (calculation model, water pressures, etc), together with the installed instrumentation and the obtained results.
EVOLUTION OF CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES FOR METRO STATIONS IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
Buenos Aires, Argentina, is expanding it's metro network. Some 22 km of new tunnels and a number of metro stations have been constructed between 1998 and 2011, and three new lines including 20 km of tunnels are scheduled for construction in the near future. During these years, construction procedures for underground stations have achieved significant improvements that had a heavy impact on design, costs and speed of construction. Some of these improvements are described in this paper, along with a brief update of the characterization of Buenos Aires soils for NATM tunneling. RESUMEN La ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, expande su red de subterráneos. Se han construido 22 km de túneles y varias estaciones entre 1998 y 2011, y se planean tres líneas nuevas incluyendo 20 km de túneles adicionales para el futuro próximo. Durante estos años, los procedimientos constructivos para estaciones subterráneas han tenido mejoras significativas, con fuerte impacto en el diseño, en los costos y en la velocidad de construcción. Algunas de estas mejoras son descriptas en este artículo, junto con una breve actualización referida a la caracterización de suelos de Buenos Aires para tunelería NATM.
Excavation for Underground Parking in Seville (Spain). Treatment with Reinforced Injections

For the accomplishment of a excavation of several levels, it is necessary the containment decision-making of the ground, and more in work situations under the phreatic level. The possible existing techniques in the market, they are various, each one of they with different applications. One of them is the technique of the treatment of the soil through the Technique of the reinforced injections. With this technique it is considered to accomplish a treatment of the perimeter of the zone to dig, in such a way that modifying the geotechnical characteristics of the soil, they could be obtained the required and cited conditions previously. For power to observe the great validity of this system, is presented a real case executed in the year 2002, in the city of Seville, in the south of Spain, together to the river Guadalquivir, the accomplishment of an underground parking of two plants, in a decrease soil quality, with next buildings of importance.

One important factor in the urban areas is the selection of suitable excavation method which has a significant effect on the stability of the structures surrounding the tunnel during excavation, surface settlement induced by excavation and long-term stability of the excavated space (subway station).In this paper, considering the geotechnical properties of the ground and geometry of the investigated station, three methods of pre-supporting concrete arch, side drifts and German method are evaluated for the execution of underground stations for space stability, tunnel peripheral displacements and ground surface settlement due to excavation operations. In other words, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the application of different excavation methods (with the inclusion of support structure or not) on the peripheral tunnel deformations, ground surface settlement and other parameters and finally, to propose the appropriate excavation method for the desired station. Numerical modeling of different execution methods of the desired space is performed using finite element method. Maximum surface ground settlement is occurred by applying side drifts method while the minimum value is occurred by applying pre-supporting concrete arc method.

Purpose – This work aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fully preserving the historical heritage at the same time reordering the cities and their traffic. Design/methodology/approach – This paper describes the sustainable solution designed for the landscape change required and to maintain the bridge integrity by excavating under the pier with the maintenance of traffic during its execution. Findings – It is concluded that the elimination of urban motorways on the surface often leads to the excavation of tunnels under the existing buildings, with little coverage in most of them. This complicates the implementation of burials in cities with an important historical heritage, which must be given conservation priority in the choice of technical solutions. Originality/value – The Segovia Bridge over the Manzanares River, the oldest bridge in Madrid, was built in the 16th century. With the burial of the M-30 motorway, it has been necessary to build a tunnel immediately under one of the bridge piers, practically without lining between the foundations and the upper slab of the tunnel.

Der folgende Beitrag 1 behandelt neu aufgefundene Erdstollen, die durch ein Forschungsprojekt der Universitäten Bamberg und Sevilla in der almohadenzeitlichen Dorfwüstung von Cuatrovitas entdeckt worden sind. Noch während der Projektlaufzeit kamen weitere Beispiele durch Straßenbaumaßnahmen im näheren Umkreis hinzu. Eine wissenschaftliche Behandlung der Thematik ist von großem Interesse, blieb doch das Phänomen dieser einfachen Systeme aus Kriechgängen in Spanien bisher auf weite Sicht unberücksichtigt, obwohl diese offensichtlich zahlreicher waren als derzeit bekannt. Mit diesen neuen Beispielen aus dem Raum des sog. Aljarafe-Gebiets bei Sevilla lässt sich länderübergreifend eine Verbindung zum Typ des mitteleuropäischen Erdstalls herstellen, dessen Auftreten und Herausbildung in der intensiv betriebenen deutschsprachigen Erdstallforschung seit über 150 Jahren gesammelt und diskutiert wird.

The project proposal for the Desierto de los Leones tunnels in the Poetas Highway in Mexico aims to improve the excavation and support systems and evaluate the safety levels during construction. The design is based on geological and geotechnical information from the original project and can be approached using various methods, including numerical simulations. The article includes a summary of the lithological characteristics, a reinterpretation of geotechnical properties, a description of new construction procedures, and the results of calculations using the finite data differences method. The proposed project aims to improve the safety and stability of the tunnels through advanced construction technologies and adapted procedures, generated by a redesign and the scientific application of new techniques developed for this project.
Design and behavior of Salgueiros Station for Porto Metro

The paper presents the design and construction of an elliptical excavation for Porto Light Metro. Due to its original shape the solution took full advantage of the arch effect in the ground, adapting the Sequential Excavation Method to the vertical direction and achieving a novel, light and economic solution. In a first phase, the paper describes the construction method, referring also to economic and planning aspects of the excavation performed. The design is presented and discussed, including the presentation of the geotechnical tests performed and a brief analysis on the parameters assumed. The final part of the paper analyses monitoring results, focusing on the most surprising aspects of the behavior and on the main differences to the numerical calculations. LOCATION OF THE WORKS The excavation presented in the paper was performed during the construction of Porto Light Metro, and is located in the city center, in an abandoned football field. Figure 1 presents an aerial view of the excavation, extracted from Google Earth, with the coordinates of the center of the excavation.

In order to solve connectivity problems in metropolitan areas, the development of underground metro lines constitutes an unquestionable requirement. However, the construction work thereof encounters unfavourable circumstances when surface excavations must be carried out that cross historical areas of the city, due to the need to control surface movements. The design of the metro in the city of Seville (Spain) from 2004 to 2006 provides a representative example of this situation and triggered major upheavals that exerted repercussions on historical buildings. For these reasons, the excavation stages of Line 1 of this metro have been simulated by numerical methods using FLAC3D software and validated with the results provided by the real conditions. Ground deformation and mitigating measures associated with the excavation of a new Metro line
A new 40 km long Metro line is currently being built in Barcelona. The construction involves the excavation of large diameter tunnels at different depths using especially designed TBMs. A number of remediation strategies have been adopted to control ground movements. In the paper two examples of such strategies are described: a) the installation of a bored pile wall alongside threatened buildings, and b) the execution of vertical and inclined jet-grouted columns above the tunnel crown and along its sidewalls.
