Prospects and Challenges of Learning Management Systems in Higher Education

Many higher education institutions nowadays are equipped with Learning Management Systems (LMS) to provide rich online learning solutions and utilize its functions and capabilities to improve the learning practices. The current study aims to gain instructors' perspective of LMS, investigate the use of its functions, and identify the barriers that may influence LMS utilization at the Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST). This research aims to examine current practices, opinions, and challenges that help academicians and system developers contribute to better learning practices and academic achievement. The study used a quantitative method that included a sample of 58 faculty members. Findings obtained from the questionnaire indicated that instructors were generally comfortable and had positive perceptions about LMS Moodle. The results revealed that LMS's administrative functions, such as files and announcements, are widely used compared to the advanced interactive learning activities. Moreover, LMS's use on mobile devices is infrequent, and more emphasis must be placed on using LMS friendly user interfaces that can enable all tools and functions to use LMS.
Academic and student use of a learning management system: Implications for quality

Many higher education institutions have implemented a learning management system (LMS) to manage online learning and teaching, with varying levels of support provided to staff and students, but often there is little subsequent investigation into the quality of the online sites or the use made of the support structures provided. This paper presents findings from an institutional survey investigating the use of WebCT by academic staff and students in their learning and teaching at a large Australian university. It was expected that student feedback would relate to technical and infrastructure issues, but instead, the survey elicited responses primarily on how WebCT was used in teaching and learning, indicating that quality control is a major issue for the University. Student opinions appear to reflect more the use of the technology made by teaching staff-students who have experienced a well-designed unit rich with resources, timely feedback and good interaction with staff reported a positive experience with the technology. Staff responses are more focused on the technical and administrative aspects of using WebCT rather than teaching issues. The findings in this paper have implications for quality teaching and learning with technology, and the way in which tertiary institutions support academic staff.
Integrating Learning Management Systems into Higher Education: Benefits, Barriers, and Requirements

Technology plays an effective and constructive role in the process of teaching and learning in higher education. It can make this process more enjoyable, productive, and interactive through its various tools. It has led to creating a new learning mode, namely e-learning which has become one of the most effective modes of teaching and learning in higher education. Learning management systems (LMSs) are e-learning tools which have become very important for education today. Nowadays, many educational institutions use such tools to manage and foster online teaching and learning environments in higher education. Based on reviewing the literature, the current research paper refers to the characteristics, features, and some common products of LMSs. It also sheds light on the benefits of integrating these powerful technology tools into the process of teaching and learning in higher education. Moreover, it points out the barriers to integrating LMSs into the process of teaching and learning in higher education and how it may be possible to overcome these barriers in order to make use of such powerful technology tools in higher education.

Enterprise-wide, repository-based, ubiquitously available, socially-oriented technologies such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) and virtual learning environments (VLE) are altering the nature of institutional teaching and learning processes. These technology induced changes are likely in turn to have an impact on the work experience of academics. This paper qualitatively examines the impact of LMS on several important academic relationships: with students, with colleagues, with the institution itself and with home. The research found that academics mainly used LMS as repositories of materials with some additional use for managing assessment; however, they make little use of communication, administration or monitoring features. Academics use LMS in ways and for purposes that suit themselves: use of LMS has not changed teaching habits or approaches. Academics were not concerned about impact of the technology on home-life or work-life balance. Academics reported little concern about intellectual property but nevertheless took measures to protect teaching materials.

Present educational trends, the development of the knowledge society, societal changes, and globalization have all to some extent, incited higher educational institutions and thus caused changes in terms of quality education and quality assurance. The change of educational system as well as changes in teaching and learning approaches lately have called for cybernetic learning and more technologically enhanced learning. Among a wide range of ICT tools, Learning Management System (LMS) has been introduced to academic institutions. This study presents the role LMS plays in teaching and learning pedagogy, access and flexibility in higher education and it is proposed for higher educational institutions to incorporate LMS into their teaching and learning processes in order to attain effective learning outcomes for students. It permits users to experience meaningful learning by different learning styles, matching individual needs, self-paced learning, and promoting lifelong learning. Most significantly, Learning Management System has provided easy access to and thus promoted flexibility in learning that one can learn from anywhere and at any time without place and time constraints. The study adopted a descriptive survey approach where students studying at various levels were randomly sampled to take part in the survey. Respondents pointed out that the use of LMS was popular among students and that it helped improve their learning and also fitted well with their learning styles. Again, respondents asserted that study reiterated that a web-based learning system provided them an attractive learning environment for their respective programmes of study and for that matter overall, they enjoyed using the web-based learning experience. They also acknowledged that they intended to use the LMS to teach after their studies and affirmed that using the LMS platform to do quizzes and submit assignments was an excellent choice and therefore it is recommended for consideration by higher educational institutions for its use.

A lot is being invested in the use of emerging technologies which encompass web-based technologies like Learning Management Systems (Blackboard or Moodle) for teaching and learning in Higher Education institutions across South Africa. The question to ask is, "Are Learning Management Systems the only technology available" to enhance teaching and learning. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether LMS usage has an added advantage in the Higher Education environment as opposed to other technologies like wiki's, blogs, facebook, twitter and Google drive. This paper investigates the enablers and constraints of the lecturers that use an LMS called Blackboard, as opposed to those that use other technologies. A social realist perspective was used to understand the agential influences, structural or cultural in the use of Blackboard's and other technologies. This study could be described as being located within an interpretive paradigm employing qualitative data collection methods as a form of inquiry. An open ended questionnaire was distributed to thirty seven lecturers who use different types of technologies to enhance their teaching and students' learning. Data was analysed into themes that align to the research questions on the survey. Lecturers felt positive about their current use of Blackboard and the support given and felt that it will be beneficial to their teaching and learning practices if other technologies received the same support.
