Ensuring Environmental Sustainability Through Sustainable Entrepreneurship

Sustainable Development

Sustainability has become an important issue worldwide because of great concerns about the unintended social, environmental, and economic effects of increasing population and economic growth, as well as consumption of natural resources. One recent concept arising from sustainability issue is sustainable entrepreneurship which integrates both the social and environmental aspects, and linking them with entrepreneurial activities. This chapter therefore suggests that efforts of developing countries at promoting entrepreneurship should go beyond engaging in business enterprises but include encouraging the use of entrepreneurial values and approaches to solve sustainability problems. Hence, this chapter is an effort at developing a framework that can be used to influence sustainable entrepreneurship behaviour of the students in developing countries.

Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development - An Exploration of Theoretical Approaches

Diplomathesis/Master Thesis, 2012

"With the onset of the 21st Century, it has become more than evident that humanity is currently pursuing a trajectory path that is not sustainable in the long run. Socio-economic systems are thus in the need for achieving a transition towards more sustainable modes of production and consumption that provide the capabilities for human well-being, while also assuring that eco-system services can sustain themselves for the generations to come. This transition can however not occur without new innovative forms of enterprises that line up with a more sustainable development. But how can they be conceptualized from a perspective of socio-economic theory? The current study aims to merge ideas and concepts from the literature on Sustainable Development with ideas and concepts from Entrepreneurship Research in order to explore current theoretical approaches for explaining the Sustainability-driven Entrepreneur. After an introduction to ideas and concepts from the literature on Sustainable Development, a similar review is made based on the literature on entrepreneurship. Drawing on the distinction between weak and strong sustainability, two approaches for describing Sustainability-driven Entrepreneurship will be examined. The weak sustainability approach builds on a market equilibrium framework, the strong sustainability approach builds on a co- evolutionary framework. Building on the latter, issues of sustainable development such as eco-efficiency, resilience, equity, sufficiency and multidimensional value criteria are discussed in regards to the organizational design principles for the sustainability driven entrepreneur. Going further these insights are explored in the context of socio-economic transition dynamics. Last but not least, the ideas and concepts are summarized in a concluding chapter."

Sustainable Entrepreneurship: Past Researches and Future Directions

Sustainable Entrepreneurship(SE) has emerged as a new area of scholarship in the field of entrepreneurship research which seeks to address social and environmental problems. Sustainable Entrepreneurship takes into account both social aspects and environmental effects and also considering the long-term economic and business consequences of new venture opportunities. The term ‘sustainable entrepreneurship’ combines two words, sustainability and entrepreneurship. However, research combining sustainable development and entrepreneurship is relatively new. The newness of the field offers tremendous opportunity to explore new ground and relationships in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship. This paper describes the concept of sustainable entrepreneurship, examines the past researches and outlines a prospective research agenda for further inquiry in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship.

Toward a theory of sustainable entrepreneurship: Reducing environmental degradation through entrepreneurial action

This article explains how entrepreneurship can help resolve the environmental problems of global socioeconomic systems. Environmental economics concludes that environmental degradation results from the failure of markets, whereas the entrepreneurship literature argues that opportunities are inherent in market failure. A synthesis of these literatures suggests that environmentally relevant market failures represent opportunities for achieving profitability while simultaneously reducing environmentally degrading economic behaviors. It also implies conceptualizations of sustainable and environmental entrepreneurship which detail how entrepreneurs seize the opportunities that are inherent in environmentally relevant market failures. Finally, the article examines the ability of the proposed theoretical framework to transcend its environmental context and provide insight into expanding the domain of the study of entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship And Sustainable Development: Entrepreneurship as if the planet mattered

Sample Chapter 5: Entrepreneurship And Sustainable Development. We have, it seems, entered the entrepreneurial century. When I first started talking about inspiring a twenty-first century renaissance powered by entrepreneurial thinking – what I came to call the Entreprenaissance – I mostly received blank looks of incomprehension. Few people, even entrepreneurs themselves, saw innovative small-to-medium business as the answer to our social woes. Let alone a global phenomenon that is set to literally revolutionise how we work, live, play and communicate.

Development of the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Model

Malaysian management journal, 2020

The most prominent feature of today's economy is rapid change. To succeed in such an economy, countries must be able to adapt to these changes with great agility. One of the most potent tools for achieving this end is sustainable entrepreneurship. Sustainable entrepreneurs are those who undertake entrepreneurial endeavors while taking into account different aspects of social, economic and environmental sustainability. These entrepreneurs strive to keep their resources focused on sustainable development and to balance the objectives of entrepreneurial success and sustainability so as to solve social and environmental problems. In this study, after reviewing the research literature and identifying the factors pertinent to sustainable entrepreneurship, a conceptual model was developed by drawing on the expertise of 10 experts, who were selected by snowball sampling. Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) approach was used to examine the network of relationships among the factors. The findings showed that the considered factors fall into four levels: sustainability culture was placed at the most fundamental level, legal requirements, resource preservation, social participation, green management and human resources management were placed at the second level, social justice, effective and efficient processes, and customer-centricity were placed at the third level, and social well-being and economic benefits were identified as the top-level factors or outputs of sustainable entrepreneurship. The proposed model depicted means, process, first order and ultimate goal in inhacing entrepreneurship sustainability endeavors.
