URINARY INCONTINENCE: A HOLISTIC OUTLOOK
Incontinence is a prevalent health condition that is rarely discussed as people living with the condition are often embarrassed to discuss it with their healthcare providers. There is no clarity regarding the Ayurvedic aspect of urinary incontinence. This creates a major diagnostic and management dilemma while approaching a case of urinary incontinence. Some authors have interpreted the condition of incontinence of urine as "Mutrateeta" which is one of the type of Mutraghata according to Ayurveda. Women are more vulnerable to urinary incontinence due to several reasons and they suffer silently due to lack of knowledge of preventive and therapeutic strategies directed toward the problem. One complementary behavioural intervention that may offer therapeutic benefits for urinary incontinence is Yoga.

Abs tract Bladder pain syndrome or interstitial cystitis is a disagreeable feeling of pain, pressure and discomfort in the urinary bladder, along with lower urinary tract symptoms that may last more than six weeks with no infection or any other identifiable cause. Its etiology is still unknown. A significant percentage of women with chronic pelvic pain suffer from interstitial cystitis. However, there are some ambiguities in its diagnostic and therapeutic process. In this article, we survey the viewpoints of Persian Medicine scholars about bladder disorders that can fit with interstitial cystitis. Thus, we designed a qualitative content analysis study and investigated signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of interstitial cystitis in conventional medicine articles. Effect of Urinary Incontinence and Its Subtypes on Quality of Life of Women in Eastern Turkey
Urology, 2012
OBJECTIVE To determine the bothersomeness and effect on quality of life (QOL) of different types of urinary incontinence (UI) in married women living in eastern Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 1049 married women was evaluated in the present population-based, cross-sectional study. QOL was assessed using a validated form of the Turkish version of the Incontinence Impact Questionnaire Short Form. The effects of UI subtype on the overall QOL score and on the individual domain scores were determined. The relationship between several demographic characteristics such as age, weight, education level, number of pregnancies, number of live deliveries, and presence of pelvic organ prolapse and the QOL changes was examined. RESULTS The mean age of the women was 44.62 AE 11.01 years (range 17-80). Of the women with UI, 76.2% stated that the UI had a negative effect on their QOL. Women with mixed UI and severe UI had the worst QOL scores. The QOL changes for the different domains revealed that entertainment activities were affected least, and emotional health and feelings of frustration were the 2 domains that showed the most significant deterioration. Furthermore, older and unemployed women, housewives, women living in urban areas, and women with multiple births, difficult labor, and increased weight experienced significant negative effects on their QOL. CONCLUSION Our results have shown that, regardless of different factors, UI has significant negative effects on QOL. The presented data emphasize the importance of the high prevalence of UI in our region and its negative effects on QOL. Thus, additional policies are needed for the prevention of the negative effects of UI. UROLOGY 80: 1221e1226, 2012. Ó 2012 Elsevier Inc.

The reliability assessment of the internal consistency was done using Cronbach’s α test. With the aid of Spearman’s correlation coefficient (r), the interdomain associations were assessed. The Mann–Whitney test was used to assess the discrimination validity. Results A high internal consistency between the mean scores of women with and those without OAB as well as BOO groups, Cronbach’s alpha value was 0.82. A strong correlation ob...
