Aiming to evaluate the profile of dentists working in the public health network of Santa Maria/RS, Brazil, and analyze their perception about service conditions and the new financing program for primary care, a study was conducted with 27 dentists working in the municipal public health network. This work is a qualitative quantitative cross-sectional study with participation of the professionals to verify socioeconomic variables, work process and their perception about the change in financing of primary care. This information was analyzed descriptively. The research results found more experienced professionals, with graduate degrees and a longer time working in public health. Many of them have complementary activities and consider their remuneration to be regular. In the professional practice they consider important to have technical, relational, and personal skills, and report facing challenges mainly related to management (lack of materials and delay in repairs), users (high demand) and the practice of the profession (lack of appreciation). Not everyone was aware of the new funding for Primary Care-Previne Brasil Program-, so there was no consensus about the benefits and harms of its implementation. Considering the lack of research in this area, this study did not aim to exhaust the theme, but to stimulate new research. Knowing the profile of professionals and their perception of the work process is important for the development of public health policies. Thus, it is expected that the data collected, and the results presented when they reach the government, contribute to the qualification of services through the training of professionals and to assist in the planning and implementation of policies that enhance the dentist's role in public service.

SURVEY AND ANALYSIS OF THE JURISPRUDENCE OF THE COURT OF JUSTICE OF THE STATE OF PARANÁ CONCERNING THE CIVIL LIABILITY OF DENTAL SURGEONS (Atena Editora), 2023
There has been an increase in the number of lawsuits filed against dental surgeons (DCs) in Brazil over the last few years. This study aims to understand and analyze the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the State of Paraná (TJPR) regarding the civil liability of dental surgeons, as well as present the profile and understanding of the factors involved in these legal proceedings. This is a documentary research, carried out by consulting the TJPR website, selecting the consultation option, the jurisprudence option, then selecting the jurisprudence research field. After completing these initial steps, the following keywords will be used for consultation in the free search field: “Dental surgeon”, “Dental clinic”, “Dentist”, “Dental”, “Dental error”, “Dentistry”, “Dentologist” and “Odontologist”. To filter the legal proceedings that occurred between January 2000 and December 2020, the keywords initially used were refined with another keyword: civil liability of the Dental professional. For analysis of jurisprudence, the cases were reclassified as follows: year of judgment; area of activity or specialty of the professional; average compensation value. Excel® spreadsheets were created to record data from the evaluated processes, so that the analysis of the same process would not be counted when the keywords or any other study variable were crossed. After collecting the research data, graphs and tables were created to compare and analyze the final results. In view of this, we obtained data relating to the quantitative and qualitative profile of lawsuits against dentistry professionals, as well as guidance for dental surgeons on the importance of knowing the characteristics of the legal demand and its implications for their contemporary professional activity.
Forensic Dentistry in a Southern Brazilian City

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe (1) the main (bio)ethical problems identified by dentists working in Primary Health Care (PHC) of the Viçosa-MG Health Microregion, (2) the conduct adopted by them in front of these questions and (3) the knowledge of these professionals about ethics and bioethics. Methods: This is a quantitative-qualitative study with questionnaire application to 48 dentists. A descriptive analysis of quantitative data and content analysis of Lawrence Bardin was performed. Results: Thirty-eight participants identified (bio)ethical problems, which were categorized into related problems: to PHC team members; management; to the team and users; and the breach of confidentiality. Of the total, 46% of the participants said that there was a solution to these questions and 79% answered that they did not know any concept of ethics and bioethics. Conclusion: The results of this study corroborate the need for permanent education directed to professionals, so that they recognize and deliberate on (bio)ethical problems.
The Dentist's Role in Southern Brazilian Teaching Hospitals: A Grounded Theory Study
Journal of Dental Education, 2018
R ecent studies have shown that oral health care delivery is becoming more prominent in the health care environment, with compelling evidence that oral health care is necessary to promote overall health, quality of life, and well-being. 1,2 Poor oral health is now recognized as a risk factor for many important diseases, such as hospital-acquired infections. 3-6 As a result, more dental care is being performed in the hospital setting in the context of comprehensive health care. 7 The oral cavity and dental plaque are reservoirs for infectious pathogens that cause systemic diseases. 8-12 Poor oral hygiene may be a risk factor for nosocomial pneumonia, so it is possible that pneumonia can be prevented with oral hygiene and periodontal treatment in the hospital. 3-6,13-15 Daily dental care provided in the hospital setting promotes dental plaque reduction and, consequently, lowers the
Exploring professionalization among Brazilian oral health technicians
Human Resources for Health, 2012
Professional dental auxiliaries emerged in the early 20th century in the United States of America and quickly spread to Europe and other regions of the world. In Brazil, however, oral health technicians (OHTs), who occupy a similar role as dental hygienists, had a long journey before the occupation achieved legal recognition: Brazilian Law 11.889, which regulates this occupation in the country, was only enacted in 2008. The aim of this paper is to review the literature on the professionalization of OHTs, highlighting the triggering, limiting and conflicting aspects that exerted an influence on the historical progress of these professionals in Brazil. We have tested Abbott's and Larson's theory on professionalization, against the history of OHTs. A number of different dental corporative interests exerted an influence over professionalization, especially in discussions regarding the permissible activities of these professionals in the oral cavity of patients. With primary health care advances in Brazil, the importance of these professionals has once again come to the forefront. This seems to be a key point in the consolidation of OHTs in the area of human resources for health in Brazil.

Data from the Forensic Dentistry Laboratory (Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra) was analysed, between the years of 2013 to 2018. One hundred and seven technical reports were selected, and seventy nine files were included in the iatrogenic sequelae group. Data included the analysis of the performance of dental professionals. Sequelae were divided in descending order of occurrence:1) mandibular dysfunction (53,2%)[(42)79]; 2) neurological deficit (39,2%)[(31)79]; 3) tooth loss (6,3%)[(5)79]; and 4) opening deficit (1,3%)[(1)79].Three major areas with significant expression in the field of expert evaluations were analysed: 1) orthodontic treatment (51,9%), implant rehabilitation (29,1%), and oral surgery. Given the prevalence of malpractice, the need to assess its causes and recognise stan...
Oral health technicians in Brazilian primary health care: potentials and constraints
Cadernos de Saúde Pública, 2014
Different perspectives on the role of mid-level workers in health care might represent a constraint to health policies. This study aimed to investigate how different agents view the participation of oral health technicians in direct activities of oral healthcare with the goal of understanding the related symbolic dispositions. Theoretical assumptions related to inter-professional collaboration and conflicts in the field of healthcare were used for this analysis. A researcher conducted 24 in-depth interviews with general dental practitioners, oral health technicians and local managers. The concepts of Pierre Bourdieu supported the data interpretation. The results indicated inter-professional relations marked by collaboration and conflict that reflect an action space related to different perspectives of primary care delivery. They also unveiled the symbolic devices related to the participation of oral health technicians that represent a constraint to the implementation of oral health ...
Risk and limits in dental practice: a Portuguese approach to medical responsibility
The Journal of forensic odonto-stomatology, 2020
Orofacial impairment analysis is based on the gathering of information to prove the causal link between the event and the individual’s clinical condition. It also intends to evaluate corporal damage according to the medical law context(criminal, civil or labor). The aim of this article is to answer the questions: What are the assumptions of malpractice? How far should we risk? Can we anticipate it? Data from the Forensic Dentistry Laboratory (Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra) was analyzed, between the years of 2013 to 2018. The analysis of leges artis limits was performed, according to the type of clinical procedure.107 files were selected. Our data support that there are three major areas with significant expression in the field of expert evaluations: implants, orthodontics and oral surgery. We believe that long and complex treatments could explain the prevalence of leges artis limits situations. We consider the necessary monitoring procedures to prevent unlawful acts
