Electrical power has turn out to be essential to human endurance and advancement. A device measuring the utilization of energy of any industrialized firm is an energy meter. Conventional meter reading by means of human operator is incompetent to assemble the upcoming residential development needs. As a result there is amplified demand intended for systems of Automatic Meter Reading which accumulates meter readings by electronic means, and its application is increasing over industrialized, utility environment and for commercial means. AMR is not merely to resolve the trouble of manual meter reading but also make available added feature such as power disconnect because of exceptional dues, illegal power usage, power reconnect subsequent to pay dues and also gives the information of whole load used in a house on appeal at any moment. Automatic meter reading system also sends the information of power consumption and power cut through SMS. This system is protected and consistent for the reason that it can be accessed merely by an authorized person and also consists of tampering detection unit that controls the illegal power usage.
Electronic Energy Meter with Remote Monitoring and Billing System
Electronic energy meter is capable of taking readings and can store it into its memory. Taking energy meter reading is time consuming and an expensive task. The meter reader travels for a long distance and take the reading manually to prepare the bill. Consumers have to go to the billing office, stand in a long line and submit the bill. This is a boring job and time consuming also. It can be avoided by remote monitoring of electronic energy meter and prepaid billing system by the use of cash card. In this paper measurement of energy, remote monitoring, preparing of bill and billing system is presented. Low cost ATMEGA8L microcontroller is used here to control the whole system. Sampling of voltage and current is done by it. Then it processes data to achieve power in that instant. Then it stores the value of total energy consumed by the consumer and can calculate energy charge according to the tariff. LCD display is attached with this system to show total energy consumed, power factor and amount of charge etc. Communication between central energy distribution office and energy meter is done through power line. Complex tariff rate set up and cash card based billing is possible in this system. Electronic meter gives high accuracy for nonlinear loads than conventional rotating disc type electro-mechanical meter. Greater accuracy and stability can be maintained in this system.

The focus of this study was on the automatic reading of energy meter for billing purposes.[1] This task is accomplished using remote metre readings using GSM technology, which is used for remote readings as and when needed. As a result, there is no need to send somebody to the customer's location to gather manual readings. Smart energy metre (SEM) are these types of metre that can communicate directionally and push data without the utility's intervention. Another advantage of this method is that it can disconnect customer load if it exceeds its predefined load limit by simply sending an SMS to the client once the load is disconnected. Both the utility and the client have access to it.
An automatic remote meter-reading system based on GSM is presented in this paper. This paper is useful to obtain meter reading when desired so meter readers don't need to visit each customer for the consumed energy data collection and to distribute the bill slips. Microcontroller can be used to monitor and record the meter readings. In case of a customer defaulter, no need to send a person of utility to cut-off the customer connection. Utility can cut off and reconnect the customer connection by short message service (SMS). Furthermore, the customer can check the status of electricity (load) from anywhere. In this system energy meter readings are being transferred by making use of GSM.

This work is about optimizing the existing meters that provide meter reading at the end of the month to the consumers with the help of a person who notes them down manually. This paper mainly highlights the existing methodology of electricity billing that takes place in the households and proposes a method with the aim of requiring minimum human interference and very high efficiency by incorporating data transfer via the internet. Thus without manpower power companies or organizations are able to provide services to its customers by feeding data in an integrated energy management system. The same data will be made accessible to the consumer and billing authorities over cloud. This way the customer is fully aware of his daily consumption. Energy theft is prevalent in the societies and by using this concept we can efficiently mitigate the same. The option of online payment is also included thus making it very convenient for the consumer to pay their bills. Further, using neural networks we have also analysed the trend of energy consumption or requirements of energy in the household. High fidelity billing and its related remote metering services are successfully implemented through this project.

The technology of E-metering (Electronic Metering) has gone through rapid technological advancements and there is increased demand for a reliable and efficient Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system. the design of a simple low cost wireless GSM energy meter and its associated web interface, for automating billing and managing the collected data globally. The proposed system replaces traditional meter reading methods and enables remote access of existing energy meter by the energy provider. Also they can monitor the meter readings regularly without the person visiting each house. A GSM based wireless communication module is integrated with electronic energy meter of each entity to have remote access over the usage of electricity. A PC with a GSM receiver at the other end, which contains the database acts as the billing point. Live meter reading from the GSM enabled energy meter is sent back to this billing point periodically and these details are updated in a central database. A new interactive, user friendly graphical user interface is developed using Microsoft visual studio .NET framework and C#. With proper authentication, users can access the developed web page details from anywhere in the world. The complete monthly usage and due bill is messaged back to the customer after processing these data. This system also can be used to disconnect the power supply to the house in case of non-payment of electricity bills. A dedicated GSM modem with SIM card is required for each energy meter.

Power is one of the most fundamental necessities of individuals, which is usually utilized for household activities, industries and farming purposes. Protection of the system from the occurrence of various accidents is the most concerning issue as it costs a lot of money to both the government and consumers. In nations like India, these circumstances are on a more regular basis, due to lack of maintenance and carelessness. In order to prevent the occurrence of such accidents we are using an Intelligent Energy Meter (IEM). IEM is an electronic device having a microcontroller interfaced with the energy meter to alert the consumer or the authority from various occurrence of accidents before handedly and also generates bill automatically at the first of every month. This paper presents an intelligent energy meter for a programmed metering. In this energy meter power used and the activation status of several sensors will be shown on the Blynk app simultaneously and conveyed to the consumers. Every accident that are about to happen are sensed and alert message is sent to the user using Wi-fi module. Wi-fi network is utilized for sending notification to the users as it is one of the faster communication technologies with respect to the short distance. The proposed system is far more advantageous than conventional energy meter and empowers remote access of existing energy meter by the energy supplier. In addition, they can screen the meter readings consistently without the individual visiting each house, as the amount of power consumption is notified to the user.

In this project deals with automatic meter reading and theft control system that measures and transmits the total energy consumption by GPRS technology provided by GSM network. Current Sensor is used to measure the total power consumption for house or industrial purpose. For transmitting the reading of energy meter GSM module is used. The GSM module provides a mode of communication between the user/meter and the EB Station. The GSM module will also get real time electricity rates and enable the utility to keep a check on electricity theft. To avoid theft, infrared sensor is placed in the screw portion of energy meter seal. Any human error is placed on the load a message is sent to the electricity board. The measuring of energy meter and monitoring of IR sensor is done with a PIC microcontroller. It also present how the meter reading, disconnection and reconnection can be controlled from server end. This model reduces the manual manipulation work and theft control.
